Rs 3,500 Per Month, Rs 12,000 For 'Valuable' Intel: What The CRPF 'Spy' Was Allegedly Promised
Last Updated:
Moti Ram allegedly handed over internal deployment data, troop movement details, intelligence agency reports, and updates on counter-terror operations in Kashmir, to Pakistan
He wore the uniform of a soldier, posted in Kashmir's Pahalgam region, tasked with safeguarding the nation. But, CRPF sub-inspector Moti Ram Jat seemed to be instead treading a far more dangerous path, that ended in his arrest by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on charges of espionage for Pakistan.
The story of Moti Ram's alleged descent into espionage was reportedly orchestrated through a female agent who posed as a television journalist, revealed investigators.
The woman reportedly introduced herself as a media professional from a prominent news network in Chandigarh. Initially requesting seemingly harmless information, she developed a relationship with Moti Ram over messages and video calls, eventually gaining his trust. The CRPF personnel, unaware of the ruse, began forwarding confidential documents. Later, a man, posing as a fellow journalist from the same channel, took over communication. He was later identified as a Pakistani intelligence officer.
The NIA said that Moti Ram handed over internal deployment data, troop movement details, intelligence agency reports, and updates on counter-terror operations in Jammu and Kashmir, to the handlers. The information was often sensitive enough to pose a direct threat to national security.
He was allegedly paid Rs 3,500 each month for his services, and occasionally a bonus of Rs 12,000 for what his handlers termed 'valuable" intel. These amounts were credited to his wife's bank account, revealed NIA.
Evidence recovered from Moti Ram's phone included screenshots of classified documents, internal reports of the Multi-Agency Centre (MAC), and communications indicating knowledge of the location of suspected terrorists. Shockingly, he continued to pass on these updates even after being transferred out of Pahalgam in mid-April, just five days before the terror attack on April 22.
Despite his removal, he allegedly continued to relay updates, including details about Home Minister Amit Shah's visit to the region and security arrangements such as the closure of 50 tourist locations, some of which were already public, but were emphasised separately in his communication with handlers. What stood out to investigators was the naivety with which Moti Ram preserved his trail. None of the chats or exchanges had been deleted from his phone.
Security officials placed Moti Ram under surveillance for weeks before swooping in. His arrest took place in Delhi, where he had been reassigned. Prior to the NIA formally taking him into custody, both the CRPF and intelligence agencies subjected him to multiple rounds of questioning.
The case is now being heard at the Patiala House Court in Delhi. Moti Ram has been remanded to NIA custody until June 6. The agency has not ruled out the involvement of other personnel and is expanding its probe to trace any additional leaks or accomplices within the security apparatus.

US hyphenating India, Pakistan; PM must drop 'stubbornness' and call special session of Parliament: Congress
Recently, the head of the US Central Command also stated that Pakistan is a "great partner" of America in the fight against terrorism, Ramesh said. "The Modi government is saying that Operation Sindoor is still going on. In such a situation, the Pakistani army chief's participation as a guest in the US Army Day is definitely a matter of serious concern," he said. Ramesh said the Trump administration is constantly making statements which can only be interpreted to mean that it is "hyphenating" India and Pakistan. "The prime minister is welcoming the delegation that returned after informing the entire world, including the US, about Pakistan's role in supporting terrorism, and at the same time, such news is coming from Washington DC makes India's diplomatic position even more uncomfortable," Ramesh said. "The prime minister should now leave aside his stubbornness and concern for prestige and call an all-party meeting and a special session of Parliament, so that the nation can clearly express its collective will and a concrete roadmap can be presented to the country," he said. Decades of diplomatic progress cannot be allowed to be weakened so easily, he added. With US Army General Michael Kurilla, Commander of US Central Command (CENTCOM), calling Pakistan a "phenomenal partner" in the counterterrorism world, the Congress on Wednesday asked what PM Modi had to say about this and whether it was not a "diplomatic setback".

HP court orders attachment of govt property in over 27-yr-old land compensation case
Shimla, June 12 (UNI) Highlighting prolonged government inaction, the district judge (forest) Ajay Mehta has directed the attachment of key government properties, including the PWD rest house at Tara Devi, two official vehicles from the PWD headquarters, furniture, computers, and heaters, over non-payment of land compensation to farmers for the past 27 years. The case pertains to land acquired in 1998 by the Public Works Department (PWD) Rohru division for the construction of the Baidhar-Thana-Tikkar road. Approximately 15 bighas were acquired, including apple orchards, and the land acquisition officer had initially assessed compensation at Rs. 6,252 per apple plant. Unsatisfied with the award, landowners from Tikka -- Diwan Chand, Bhajan Das, Inder Singh, Narain Chand, Bahadur Singh, Nihal Chand, Jagdish, Mohan Chand, Jai Krishan, and Rameshwar -- moved court in 2012. In 2017, the additional district and sessions judge ordered an enhanced compensation of Rs 26,575 per plant. However, the state failed to implement the order or deposit Rs 2.5 crore compensation, prompting the petitioners to file an execution petition in 2020. The court noted that despite three prior orders to attach government property, no action was taken to disburse the compensation. It further observed that both the secretary (PWD secretariat) and the Land Acquisition Officer (Winter Field, Shimla) failed to cooperate with court proceedings. While the state government has now sought an additional four months to deposit the dues, the next hearing has been scheduled for June 18. The court has made it clear that the attachment orders will remain in force until then. In a related matter, a single bench of Justice Ajay Mohan Goel of the Himachal Pradesh High Court recently ordered the attachment of Himachal Bhavan and 18 properties of HPTDC over unpaid arbitration awards and pending dues of retired employees, reflecting a broader trend of judicial strictness over financial defaults by the state.
