What Kyle Larson said about weather forecast for Indy 500, NASCAR Coca Cola 600 double attempt

Kyle Larson is checking the weather forecast as closely as any of his instrument panels this week in Indianapolis as he prepares to attempt the Memorial Day weekend double on May 25 for the second straight year. The 2021 NASCAR Cup Series champion's hopes of completing the Indianapolis 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the NASCAR Cup Series Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway were dashed in 2024 when both races were affected by rain. Advertisement Weather could again be a factor. The National Weather Service in Indianapolis is predicting afternoon showers on race day with potential thunderstorms. "It's been changing day to day; some days it'll look a little worse and then the next day you check and it looks OK," Larson said. "You're in the Midwest in May. It could be 80 degrees and sunny or it could be raining it's (expletive) off." The 2024 Indy 500 was delayed for about three hours after Indianapolis received 1.48 inches of rain. It was the third-heaviest rain ever for an Indy 500. The rain chance during the scheduled race window on May 25 at Charlotte Motor Speedway is 18%. Advertisement HOW TO BUR CRACKER BARREL 400 TICKETS Not as much 'hype' for Kyle Larson in second double attempt In 2024 Larson stirred up a great deal of attention by trying to compete in the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600. Larson was hoping to become only the fifth driver to finish both iconic races joining John Andretti (1994), Robby Gordon (1997, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004), Tony Stewart (1999, 2001), and Kurt Busch (2014) to complete the 1,100 miles of racing. As he prepares this year Larson has noticed there does not seem to be as much fanfare surrounding his second attempt. "This year compared to last year the hype is a lot less," Larson said. "Your second go-around, the cool factor is a little less across the board. Not for myself and how I feel about it, but for the media and all that. It's felt different for sure." Advertisement Larson is not saying he's being slighted by the media. It just seems to be measured this year and he is fine with that. "I felt like last year was crazy, like almost too much and not fair to the others in the field," Larson said. "Where this year I'd say it's a little more fair with other drivers getting their spotlight. I like that. I don't ever like stealing the spotlight from people or the sport. It's not like I'm flying under the radar this time, I'm just blending in a little bit more." KYLE WHO? Advertisement Larson has established himself as one of the hardest-working drivers on the NASCAR circuit. He has shown versatility by adapting and competing in many different types of race cars and tracks. "I don't know if (his children) learned anything from last year just dealing with the disappointment of weather," Larson said. "I just hope my kids and all kids can look at me as an inspiration of somebody who really, really loved what they did and worked really hard at becoming the best at it. And the dedication that it takes and the sacrifice too. There's a lot of sacrifice that goes along with it." Reach Mike Organ at 615-259-8021 or on X @MikeOrganWriter.
