How to deal with your — and your child's — anxiety during wildfire season
Nearly 100 wildfires have been reported in Newfoundland and Labrador so far this year, marking an early and active start to the season that has already claimed 12 homes on the island and threatened a community in central Labrador. The threat of wildfires can cause significant disruption, and child psychologist Janine Hubbard says the stress and uncertainty affects everyone. Hubbard said it's important to avoid keeping children in the dark about what's happening. "Kids are smart. They pick up on the fact that adults are stressed over that," Hubbard said. Rather than treating fires like an elephant in the room, Hubbard said, parents should involve their children in the preparation for a potential emergency evacuation. Hubbard also suggests assigning children tasks, such as packing a bag or taking pictures of the home, which can be helpful for insurance purposes. "Let them take total control of a bag that they want to pack with what they think are priorities. You can pack the necessities and the practical stuff in another bag for them, but let them figure that out," she said. For children between the ages of eight and 10, Hubbard said allowing them to learn about wildfires through age-appropriate YouTube videos can be helpful. "There are some fabulous videos and information online about how forest fires work," she said. "They get their sense of control by just understanding the situation a little bit better." The main priority, she said, is reminding children that they will be safe. For adults, she suggests preparing for wildfires in a similar manner to how people prepare for a hurricane can help alleviate anxiety. "This is the time to make sure you've got all your emergency preparedness, your extra dog food, your extra water, all of those things," she said. "This appears to be something we're going to be talking about each year." Fires settling Provincial forest fire duty officer Jeff Motty said Monday that the fire threatening Churchill Falls is now under control, while a second fire, burning in nearby Faden Siding, is being contained. Happy Valley-Goose Bay lifted its municipal fire ban on Monday, while several towns on the Avalon Peninsula maintain theirs despite there being a low risk status on the province's fire hazard map. WATCH | Fred Hollett says he's seen a shift in the fire season: Motty said rain is in the forecast for Labrador — news that allows him to breathe a sigh of relief. "Three of four days this week, we are expecting rain in Labrador. So that will settle the fire risk down," Motty said. "The weather settles my brain." Having a fire this long weekend? A forest fire officer says campers need to be cautious
Newfoundland and Labrador's provincial forest fire duty officer says it's important to be cautious over the Victoria Day weekend, given the already high number of reported wildfires so far this year. The Newfoundland and Labrador active wildfire dashboard has reported 65 wildfires already this season. Jeff Motty said numbers have skyrocketed because of dry conditions. Just seven wildfires had been reported at the same time last year. A recent large-scale fire in the area of Adam's Cove, which saw homes destroyed, a state of emergency called and residents evacuated for days, points to the importance of keeping fires under control. Fire crews also fought a wildfire in the Whitbourne area earlier on Friday. "Fire chiefs and fire departments, they're all kind of concerned going into this weekend. Because we're going to see some nicer weather going into this weekend. And, you know, with nicer weather comes the opportunity to have campfires," Motty told CBC News on Friday. Motty said before any fire is started, it's important to first check local regulations, weather conditions and the risk of a wildfire in the area. The Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture currently lists most of the province as having zero to low risk of a fire, but there are some exceptions. WATCH | Check the weather and your ATV muffler — for fire safety precautions: Parts of central and southwestern Newfoundland, south of Flat Bay, are under a moderate risk. Terra Nova National Park was under a high risk on Friday. "You want to have your tools alongside you to be able to extinguish that campfire when you're done with it. So having a campfire, you want to make sure it's on a prepared site, [making sure] it's not too windy," Motty said. "You also want to make sure that you always keep that fire attended. And once you're done for the evening, you want to make sure you thoroughly soak that fire until you know it's out for sure." Motty said it's also important to keep any equipment you might use over the weekend — like an ATV or chainsaw — in clean, working order. He said they can be among the leading causes for human-caused wildfires. "That piece of dirt that gets up on the muffler, that can catch on fire and fall off behind you. You could be driving a long distance and not even know that you've created a wildfire behind you," he said. Motty said a provincial fire ban isn't being considered at the moment, but weather crews across the province are monitoring conditions. Sydney Sixers appoints Matthew Mott as head coach for their Women's team
New Delhi [India] May 9 (ANI): Sydney Sixers have appointed former Australia and England mentor Matthew Mott as their new women's head coach for the next two years, as per a release from Sydney Sixers. With a reputation as one of the most accomplished coaches in the modern game, Mott brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of success at the highest level. First secured by the club as an assistant with the Sixers men's side last summer, the appointment of the highly sought-after coaching talent marks a significant win for the club and one of the biggest coups in the competition to date. Mott will take charge of the women's program following the departure of Charlotte Edwards last month and will continue to provide his services to the men's squad, working alongside coaching great Greg Shipperd. Renowned as one of the game's most prolific title-winners, Mott has led championship-winning teams at both the domestic and international levels, on home soil in Australia and abroad. Head coach of the national women's team from 2015 to 2022, Mott's tenure was marked by a culture of sustained excellence and World Cup success, producing two T20 World Cup victories (2018 and 2020) and an ICC Women's World Cup title (2022), in addition to four Ashes series wins, steering the side through an era of sheer dominance. Following his departure from the Australian side, Mott was recruited to England to lead the men's national white-ball squads, where he saw further success with his side lifting the T20 World Cup in 2022 under his leadership. A talented left-handed batter, Mott represented Victoria and Queensland in a first-class playing career spanning a decade, before beginning his coaching journey with the organisation he now fittingly returns to, joining Cricket NSW as an assistant coach in 2005. Speaking about his appointment, Mott said he was excited to build on his current connection with the club and its players. 'I'm absolutely delighted to be working with the Sixers women's team. I've had a strong connection with the club over many years, so when the opportunity came up, it was one I was really keen to take on.' 'Having coached several players in the current squad, I'm looking forward to reconnecting with them, as well as working with some of the younger talent, as we push to secure another WBBL title.' 'The list is already stacked with talent, including players who've achieved success at various levels. We're looking to build on that at the Draft and put ourselves in a position to bring home a championship again this season,' he added. Speaking about the opportunity for Mott to take charge of the women's side, Sixers General Manager Rachael Haynes said: 'There are few coaches in world cricket who have achieved a similar track record of success, and 'Motty' has proven that he knows what it takes to build a strong, winning culture.' 'Motty was a fantastic addition to our men's coaching group last season, and we're really pleased that he will also continue in his role assisting the BBL side under the guidance of Greg Shipperd.' 'As a club, we strive to be world-class in all that we do, from our match day experience to our on-field performances, and we're excited to see Motty bring that same world-class approach to our program over the next two years,' he added. Cup winning coach Mott to take charge of the Sixers
Matthew Mott will return to women's cricket, with Australia's World Cup winning coach to take charge of the Sydney Sixers. Mott was confirmed as the Sixers' new WBBL head coach on Friday, replacing Charlotte Edwards after she took the top job with England. The move will reunite Mott with the likes of Alyssa Healy, Ellyse Perry and Ashleigh Gardner, who were all central to his success as Australia's coach. Mott's former vice-captain from his time in charge of the Australian team will also act as his boss, with Rachael Haynes the Sixers' general manager. "I'm absolutely delighted to be working with the Sixers women's team," Mott said. "I've had a strong connection with the club over many years, so when the opportunity came up, it was one I was really keen to take on. "Having coached a number of players in the current squad, I'm looking forward to reconnecting with them, as well as working with some of the younger talent." One of Australia's most successful coaches, Mott turned the national team into an all-conquering beast during his time in charge from 2015 to 2022. Under his guidance, Australia won two T20 World Cup and an ODI one, winning every trophy they contested between late 2017 and his exit. He left the role to take up his first full-time international job as head of England's men's team, and had immediate success in that year's T20 World Cup. But he was bundled out of the job last year, before becoming an assistant with the Sixers in the men's BBL. Mott will face a job to turn the Sixers back into a force in the WBBL, with the club having not won a tournament since 2017-18. The Sixers have reached the finals just once in the past six years, despite having some of the biggest names in the women's game at their disposal. "There are few coaches in world cricket who have achieved a similar track record of success and Motty has proven that he knows what it takes to build a strong, winning culture," Haynes said. "Motty was a fantastic addition to our men's coaching group last season, and we're really pleased that he will also continue in his role assisting the BBL side under the guidance of Greg Shipperd."
