Unseasonal rains in May & June deal a Rs 9 crore blow to MSEDCL in dist

Nagpur: Unseasonal rains accompanied by strong winds in May and June caused extensive damage to Nagpur district's power infrastructure, resulting in a financial setback of over Rs 9 crore for the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited ( MSEDCL ). The torrential downpour brought down trees, snapped power lines, bent electric poles, and led to widespread waterlogging, severely affecting daily life and disrupting electricity supply across the district. According to data shared by MSEDCL, 562 high-tension (HT) and 2,344 low-tension (LT) electric poles were damaged. Additionally, 38.33 kilometres of HT overhead lines and 205.01 kilometres of LT lines were impacted. "The damage also includes the collapse of four distribution boxes and nine distribution points, while 185 distribution transformers were hit. Five single-phase meters and equipment at two substations were also reported damaged," said MSEDCL. The company estimates that around 150 metres of HT and 80 metres of LT lines were completely ruined, taking the total loss to approximately Rs 9.06 crore. MSEDCL had to deploy additional manpower and resources to carry out restoration work. "Despite the scale of destruction, our field staff responded with urgency. They worked day and night, often under harsh weather conditions, to restore power in villages and urban pockets plunged into darkness. Their continuous efforts ensured that power supply was resumed at several locations soon," said MSEDCL. The company's prompt response and the tireless work of its employees helped mitigate the crisis and restore essential services, providing much-needed relief to citizens affected by the unseasonal weather. To meet increased demand, MSEDCL boosts infra strengthening works Between March 1 and June 20, 2025, the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) carried out a major upgrade of Nagpur district's power infrastructure to address the rising demand for electricity. In this short span of three and a half months, four new 33/11 kV substations were commissioned — two each in Mahal and Butibori divisions. Additionally, the company enhanced the capacity of power transformers at ten existing substations spread across Mahal, Civil Lines, Saoner, Umred, and Mouda. To further strengthen the local power network, MSEDCL also installed 471 new distribution transformers of various capacities across both urban and rural circles. These efforts aim to ensure a more stable and efficient power supply system while preparing the district to meet future energy needs.
