Nagpur: Unseasonal rains accompanied by strong winds in May and June caused extensive damage to Nagpur district's power infrastructure, resulting in a financial setback of over Rs 9 crore for the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (
MSEDCL
).
The torrential downpour brought down trees, snapped power lines, bent electric poles, and led to widespread waterlogging, severely affecting daily life and disrupting electricity supply across the district.
According to data shared by MSEDCL, 562 high-tension (HT) and 2,344 low-tension (LT) electric poles were damaged. Additionally, 38.33 kilometres of HT overhead lines and 205.01 kilometres of LT lines were impacted.
"The damage also includes the collapse of four distribution boxes and nine distribution points, while 185 distribution transformers were hit. Five single-phase meters and equipment at two substations were also reported damaged," said MSEDCL.
The company estimates that around 150 metres of HT and 80 metres of LT lines were completely ruined, taking the total loss to approximately Rs 9.06 crore.

The Mouda division bore the brunt of the damage, where the extent of destruction was the highest.
MSEDCL had to deploy additional manpower and resources to carry out restoration work.
"Despite the scale of destruction, our field staff responded with urgency. They worked day and night, often under harsh weather conditions, to restore power in villages and urban pockets plunged into darkness. Their continuous efforts ensured that power supply was resumed at several locations soon," said MSEDCL.
The company's prompt response and the tireless work of its employees helped mitigate the crisis and restore essential services, providing much-needed relief to citizens affected by the unseasonal weather.
To meet increased demand, MSEDCL boosts infra strengthening works
Between March 1 and June 20, 2025, the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) carried out a major upgrade of Nagpur district's power infrastructure to address the rising demand for electricity. In this short span of three and a half months, four new 33/11 kV substations were commissioned — two each in Mahal and Butibori divisions.
Additionally, the company enhanced the capacity of power transformers at ten existing substations spread across Mahal, Civil Lines, Saoner, Umred, and Mouda.
To further strengthen the local power network, MSEDCL also installed 471 new distribution transformers of various capacities across both urban and rural circles. These efforts aim to ensure a more stable and efficient power supply system while preparing the district to meet future energy needs.

Wayanad to get first weather radar, boosting disaster readiness in high ranges

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Ending a long wait, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) is setting up its first radar station in Wayanad, a move expected to significantly enhance weather forecasting and disaster preparedness in the high ranges. The X-band doppler weather radar system will be installed on land provided by the Pazhassiraja College in Pulpally. A 30-year lease agreement was signed on Wednesday between IMD, Kerala State Disaster Management Authority and college authorities. Given Wayanad's vulnerability to landslides, the installation is being hailed as a game changer. 'The radar will monitor rainfall within a 100km radius, covering Wayanad and adjoining areas in Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu,' said IMD Kerala director Neetha K Gopal. The demand for a radar station in the region dates to 2010. Though the project was marked high-priority, identifying suitable land proved difficult. Locations in Kozhikode and Kannur were also considered before zeroing in on Wayanad. Official clearance came this April. Until now, Wayanad was not adequately covered by the Kochi radar, which hampered weather alerts and early warnings. Last year, a series of major landslides in Meppadi panchayat left nearly 300 people died. Minor mudslides have been reported this year in forested areas. Neetha clarified that while the radar itself does not predict landslides, it provides crucial rainfall data that supports forecasts by other central agencies. 'Landslides are impacts. The radar gives us better rainfall input, which feeds into impact-based forecasting,' she explained. The MoU marks a critical step toward setting up the facility. 'We've discussed electricity and internet connectivity. Once the land agreement is signed, we can proceed with the rest,' Neetha said. The radar system is being supplied by Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) at a cost of Rs 6 crore.

Time of reckoning: As rains knock on capital's doors, MCD claims major desilting work done

New Delhi: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi claimed that it had achieved more than its goal of collecting and transporting around 1.3 lakh tonnes of silt dug out from drains deeper than 4 ft within its jurisdiction before the monsoon began. "Against a target of 1,26,474 tonnes of silt to be removed, in the first phase since Jan, we have collected 1,56,148 tonnes, which is 124% of the target," a municipal official said. MCD has 800 drains, spanning 530km, under its jurisdiction that are more than 4 ft deep. The first phase of silt removal was from Jan to May. MCD officials confirmed that the desilting target was achieved and, in fact more than the scheduled silt was removed in certain areas. "We will continue the task of clearing the drains over the next two months. As our drains carry mixed discharge and daily floating material is also dumped in the drains, regular cleaning is necessary to avoid overflowing of drains and flooding of areas. We are fully prepared to handle all situations during the monsoon," said an MCD official. The municipal corporation said that silt removal at three major drains — those at Defence Colony and Sunheri and the Kushak Nullah — was 85% completed and the remaining work was likely to be concluded within the next few days. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo Additionally, the sanitation department removed approximately 40,000 tonnes of silt from smaller drains, according to civic officials. Although MCD assigned the task of desilting drains 4 ft and deeper to contractors in Feb, the work faced delays and the civic body had to extend the deadline from May 31 to June 15. MCD is dumping the accumulated silt at the landfills at Bhalswa and Ghazipur but not at Okhla. Officials also claimed that at a few big drains that hadn't been taken over for maintenance by Delhi govt's irrigation and flood control department yet, MCD might take a few more days to complete their unclogging. The desilting work is done in two phases, with the first carried out prior to the monsoon between Jan 1 and May 31, when 60% cleaning is done of the drains more than 4 ft deep. The second phase is done after the arrival of the monsoon winds to facilitate uninterrupted flow of drains. In the second phase this year, the target is to remove 84,466.6 tonnes of silt, taking the total target to 2,13,859.5 tonnes. The civic body issued an order on Friday on the disbursement of Rs 25 lakh to each councillor under the local area development fund scheme. Instructions have been issued to use the money for repair work, acquisition of tiles and other works necessary to reduce waterlogging. The MCD circular said, "The funds can be used for maintenance works such as the engagement of tractor trolleys for lifting silt and malba, for carrying out repair work, procuring manhole covers, gully gratings, stone aggregate, coarse sand, pipes, etc., procurement of bags containing bitumen mixed material for undertaking patch repair after rains, procurement of slabs of different sizes for missing locations, minor repair at intersections, turnings, slip roads, or public spaces of larger gatherings. " It added that works would require the prior approval of the area councillor and cost estimates had to be booked with the planning section.
