Michele Mouton Joins Pikes Peak Hall Of Fame As Group B Audi Celebrates Her Record-Breaking Run

Forty years ago, Michele Mouton piloted her Audi S1 E2 up Pikes Peak to set a new overall record of 11:25.39, beating all the men, including former record holder Al Unser, Jr. That would be her last trip to Pikes Peak in competition, as she leaft Audi at the end of the 1985 WRC season and professional rally altogether in 1986, though she's certainly kept busy since. To this day, she remains the only Queen of the Mountain among a long list of Kings dating back to 1916. To commemorate this accomplishment, Mouton was inducted into the Pikes Peak Hall of Fame at the 103rd running of the event this past weekend. This was not the only celebration of her achievement, though. Frog Racing, an amateur rally and hillclimb team out of Massachusetts, joined forces with RayTeam Motorsport to enter a 1986 Audi S1 E2 in the race up the mountain in tribute to Mouton. Read more: These Are Lesser-Known Automotive YouTubers Our Readers Say Deserve More Attention Driver Emmanuel Cecchet is a fixture at New England rally and hillclimb events, both as a driver and a scrutineer. His wife, Margaret Sharron, races her own Subaru and is officially the fastest woman ever up Mount Washington. Despite extensive experience in the northeast, this would be his first visit to Pikes Peak. That's a lot of car to put into the hands of someone new to the mountain. To familiarize himself with it, he and RayTeam tested the Audi at Thompson Speedway, Mt. Ascutney, and the Okemo Hillclimb before heading to Colorado. Pikes Peak practice went well. The team displayed the car at Mouton's induction ceremony, where they also met the legend herself. Unfortunately, wind gusts up to 120 mph at the summit forced organizers to shorten the course on race day, ending at Glen Cove at a mere 11,450 feet elevation. Between that and the fully paved road surface compared to the dirt that Mouton set her record on, there is no way to directly compare times. While Cecchet finished with a time of 5:09.043, that put him 16th in Open class and 56th overall. But who cares? Cecchet wasn't there to win the race. He was there to commemorate the first, and so far only, woman to win the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. Seeing the car out there, and especially hearing its unique inline-5 engine echoing off the mountainside, brought Pikes Peak history to life. Want more like this? Pipe Track and Newlands Ravine I love a good hike, and Table Mountain offers several paths of tranquillity and unmatched views of the city. The Pipe Track is a great starting point for any hiker, and it can be lengthened or shortened depending on your available time or how much you want to challenge yourself. Newlands Ravine is much the same – just as beautiful – but it's perfect for taking the dogs on what I like to call 'walkies on steroids.' I'm a dog dad to four Boston Terriers, so this is essential. City Sightseeing A trip on the Cape Town City Sightseeing bus is one of the best ways to feel proud of the city I live in. It offers the opportunity to see many places I can check off my bucket list, and the Hop-On Hop-Off feature makes it a full day of fun and connection with loved ones. A little-known fact is that I'm the voice of the City Sightseeing bus, so I literally get the chance to practice what I preach through those earphones. Spier This place will always be special to me and my family. It offers picnics with friends, which lead to games of 30 Seconds and snacks on the lawns. Their restaurant, Vadas, serves the best Pastéis de Nata I have ever tasted, along with Smokehouse offerings one can only dream of. Who would've thought a head of broccoli could be so good? I'd highly recommend it. R310 Baden Powell Dr, Stellenbosch Epice One of my favourite places in the world is Franschhoek. It is brimming with amazing restaurants and truly incredible experiences. The chef at the helm here is Charne Sampson (Mouton), who is a genius when it comes to mixing lekker Cape Malay flavours with French techniques. When you're there, snap as many pics as you can, especially of the ice cream cart that swings by for dessert. Beau Constantia I love this spot – it's fine dining, but it never feels inaccessible. The menu changes beautifully and often, not just seasonally, thanks to the experimental mind of my friend, Chef Ivor Jones, who just scooped Chef of the Year at the 2025 Eat Out Awards. 1043 Constantia Main Rd, Constantia Salsify Clearly, I'm a restaurant guy, but this place is one of those spots where your phone constantly comes out to snap pictures of the décor, graffiti, and preserved history. The menu is always fresh and creative, and the chef, Ryan Cole, is a humble, talented guy who makes you feel like you've been invited over to his place for some though it's a multi-award-winning, must-see restaurant. Tulbagh Recently, I was invited to experience Tulbagh, just a little over an hour outside of Cape Town, and I was highly impressed with the incredible places one can explore there. This included a stay at Rijk's Wine Estate as well as Manley Estate, where I was thoroughly impressed with the culinary team, made up of trained local women from the area. I'm also booked to stay at the Geodome accommodation soon, something I've wanted to do for the past few years.

Namibia's Mouton eyes Top 14 'dream' with Grenoble

Since the 25-year-old winger was dropped by the Bulls after high shool, he has studied politics while playing at university in Johannesburg, featured at a World Cup and signed a short-term contract in Israel. This weekend, in-form Mouton and his Grenoble side face unfancied Montauban in the final of France's second-tier Pro D2, 80 minutes away from the promised land of the Top 14, the world's richest league. "It's what I've been striving for my whole career," Mouton told AFP on Wednesday. "It took me seven years to get to this point. "So if we can pull it off this weekend, it will be truly a dream come true for me with all the sacrifice and everything that I had to make." Mouton, who can also slot in at centre, made the first of his nine Test appearances for the Welwitschias in 2022 before scoring twice at the World Cup in France a year later. His performances earned him a contract at Tel-Aviv Heat in Rugby Europe's Super Cup but they played all their games abroad following an unprecedented attack on Israel launched by Hamas on October 7, 2023 from the Gaza Strip. "I didn't really spend time in Israel because of everything that was happening at that time," Mouton said. "We travelled quite a lot. "We went to Portugal, Spain, and then we stayed in Cyprus for a few weeks," he added. 'Amazing' Mouton joined Grenoble, nestled in the French Alps and their snow-capped mountains, this season and has scored 14 tries, including 10 of them in his last six games. At the end of the campaign, his focus will turn to Namibia, ranked 25th in the world, and July's qualifying tournament for the 2027 World Cup, weeks after hosting Italy in a one-off Test. "Once the weekend is out of the way, I can start focusing on that," Mouton added. "But I'm quite excited for what's to come because we're going to play Italy in Namibia. That's quite a big deal for us." The politics graduate from Wits University will have a Namibian reunion at a sold-out Stade Ernest-Wallon, the 19,000-capacity home of French giants Toulouse, this weekend. Experienced lock Tjiuee Uanivi is set to feature for Montauban, who only stayed in the second-tier thanks to winning a relegation play-off last season. "It will be quite nice to play against him," Mouton said. "I really don't want to lose because he will rub it in my face when we have to go back to Namibia." Saturday offers Mouton's club, French first division champions in 1954, a chance at redemption. They finished top of the table after the regular season having tasted defeat in two straight Pro D2 finals as they eye a return to the Top 14 after relegation in 2019. "I think for the club it will be more personal because of the past two years," Mouton said. "So if we can go and pull this one off this year, it will be amazing." Namibia's Mouton eyes Top 14 'dream' with Grenoble

Namibia's Gerswin Mouton has experienced a path less trodden by most professional rugby players, but that will count for nothing as he aims to help fire Grenoble to the French Top 14 on Saturday.
