New 4G mast switched on to improve coverage in remote North Yorkshire areas
A new government-backed 4G mast has been switched on to improve connectivity in some of North Yorkshire's most remote communities. The upgrade, part of the UK Government's Shared Rural Network (SRN) scheme, aims to improve mobile coverage in rural areas and bring all four major networks—EE, Three, VMO2, and Vodafone—to areas that previously had limited service. The latest mast, now live near Hawes in North Yorkshire, is delivering improved coverage to surrounding villages including Hardraw, Appersett, Snaizeholme, and Sedbusk, as well as parts of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Ben Roome, chief executive of Mova, said: "I am delighted that locals and visitors can celebrate Yorkshire Day with enhanced outdoor 4G mobile connectivity from all of the mobile network operators for the first time. "The masts, delivered by the Shared Rural Network, in Yorkshire bring connectivity to residents, businesses, and anyone passing through. "Thanks to the Shared Rural Network, not-spots are shrinking, connections are growing, and more coverage is on its way." The SRN programme, launched in 2020, is a partnership between the UK Government and mobile network operators to tackle mobile "not-spots"—areas with little or no coverage. Across the UK, 58 masts are now live under the scheme. In Yorkshire, the programme has already brought improved 4G coverage to parts of the North York Moors National Park and surrounding communities, and it now covers more than 494,000 metres of roads in the region. Chris Bryant MP, UK minister for telecoms, said: "Visitors to the Dales this Yorkshire Day will now enjoy better mobile signal thanks to the Government's continued drive to boost connectivity in rural areas. "The rollout of the Shared Rural Network means walkers can navigate more easily and access information on the go, while local businesses can benefit from being better connected, and emergency services can provide support more quickly when needed. "This is connectivity that breaks down digital barriers and unlocks economic potential in Yorkshire's world-class beauty spots – all of which boosts our Plan for Change." Nationally, the SRN has extended 4G coverage from all four operators to an additional 34,000 square kilometres, including 280,000 premises and 16,000km of roads. The UK Government has invested £184 million in the scheme, with mobile operators contributing more than £500 million.

Mobile coverage blackspots shrinking in rural Wales
The improvements are part of the UK Government's Shared Rural Network (SRN) programme, which is jointly funded with mobile network operators to boost coverage in remote and underserved areas. Ben Roome, CEO of Mova, said: "30 new EAS masts are now live in the Welsh hills. "For the first time, signals from every mobile network are threading through valleys and reaching a further 2,500 kilometres of road—bringing connectivity to residents, businesses, and anyone passing through. "Thanks to the Shared Rural Network, not-spots are shrinking, connections are growing, and more coverage is on its way." A total of 30 masts have been activated in Wales, out of 56 across the UK, delivering faster and more reliable mobile coverage to rural towns and villages. Communities in Llangernyw, Pandy Tudur, Gwytherin, Cwmystwyth, and Llanymawddwy are among those now benefitting from improved connectivity. The upgrades also extend coverage across Bannau Brycheiniog and Eryri national parks, as well as areas of outstanding natural beauty like the Wye Valley and Bryniau Clwyd a Dyffryn Dyfrdwy. The improvements have been made by upgrading existing masts that previously only supported EE customers and emergency calls. Now, 4G coverage from all four major operators—EE, Virgin Media O2, Vodafone, and Three—is available in these areas. Jo Stevens, secretary of state for Wales, said: "Funded by UK Government investment, 30 new sites in Wales now have fast and reliable mobile internet access in areas which were previously poorly served. "Reliable connectivity improves every aspect of day-to-day life in rural Wales and makes a huge difference for local businesses, residents, and visitors. "This is an important step forward in our mission to kickstart the economy and unlock opportunity in rural areas across Wales."

Concerns for Cairngorms eagles over 4G mast plan
Park planners have recommended rejecting a proposal for a 15m (49ft) telecommunications mast proposed for an area that supports breeding golden eagles. EE wants to construct the steel structure in Glen Avon as part of a UK-wide project tackling "not spots" - areas with poor or no mobile phone coverage. Cairngorms National Park Authority (CNPA) officers said the communications company had not considered potential impacts on eagles. Developer Mova, which is owned by EE, Three, Virgin Media O2 and Vodafone, said local feedback guided the locating of masts. Objections to 4G masts in Highland wild land 'First' mobile coverage for parts of Western Isles Two micro wind turbines and a solar array to provide power to the mast have also been proposed for the site near the summit of Gael Charn, about five miles (8km) from Tomintoul. In a report to CNPA's planning committee, officials said the location was within the Cairngorms Massif Special Protection Area. The area's importance to golden eagles forms part of the designation. Golden eagles are a large bird of prey with a wingspan of more than two metres (6.5ft). They were once found widely across the UK but years of persecution has reduced their range to upland areas of Scotland and Northern Ireland, according to the RSPB. CNPA officials said the mast should be denied planning permission due to concerns about potential "adverse impacts" on biodiversity. The mast would form part of the £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN), which was set up to tackle not spots. SRN is a joint initiative between mobile network operators and the UK government to extend 4G connectivity to 95% of the UK's landmass by the end of 2025. The project's aim is to improve connectivity for residents, businesses and tourists. It has brought mobile phone coverage to parts of the Western Isles for the first time, but a number of sites in parts of Scotland have faced opposition. Mova chief executive Ben Roome said: "The mobile network operators and government rely on feedback from local communities and stakeholder groups to maximise the benefits of new sites, helping to ensure best value for public money. "Planning committees are a key part of this process to decide if new infrastructure should be permitted." CNPA
