Railroad repair prompts closure of part of W. Baddour Pkwy

Portions of West Baddour Parkway will be closed over the weekend for crews to conduct railroad repairs. The Tennessee Department of Transportation says the RJ Corman Railroad Company will close West Baddour Pkwy to through traffic at the railroad crossing behind Tractor Supply for the repairs. All businesses and residents will still have access during construction, but regular through traffic will be detoured to West Main Street. TDOT says the work is weather-dependent, as there are chances of showers and thunderstorms in Wilson County over the weekend. The Move Over Law, passed in 2006, was referenced by TDOT when reminding drivers to slow down and move over when traveling through a work zone. Violation can result in up to 30 days in jail and a maximum fine of up to $500. The closure is in effect from Friday, May 30, at 8 p.m. through Monday, June 2, at 5 a.m.

Oconto County sheriff reminds drivers to follow Wisconsin's Move Over Law

OCONTO COUNTY, Wis. (WFRV) – Authorities in Oconto County are issuing a reminder to drivers about Wisconsin's Move Over Law, emphasizing the importance of safety when emergency vehicles are present. In a recent social media post, Oconto County Sheriff Todd Skarban outlined key points of the law, which requires drivers to move over or slow down when approaching stopped emergency or service vehicles with flashing lights. Wisconsin sees 22% increase from 5-year average with nearly 900 bicycle crashes in 2024 'If you are driving in the opposite direction on a divided highway, you are not required to pull over,' Skarban clarified. For those approaching emergency vehicles directly, the sheriff broke down proper driver behavior: Pull to the right: Move as far to the right edge of the road as possible. Stop: Come to a complete stop until the emergency vehicle has passed. Safe speed: If you cannot pull over, slow down as much as safely possible. Stay alert: Be aware of sirens and flashing lights, and keep your radio volume at a level where sirens can be heard. Follow instructions: Obey any directions given over a loudspeaker. In intersections: Clear the intersection before pulling over. Appleton Area School District students given opportunity for direct admission to Lawrence University Sheriff Skarban also reiterated that the Move Over Law is designed to create a safety buffer for first responders and roadside workers. 'Please be mindful of your surroundings and drive safely,' said Skarban. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Southern California AAA Memorial Day weekend roadway travel advice

Travel experts say there will be record-breaking numbers on the roadways this weekend for the third consecutive year as the Memorial Day holiday marks the unofficial start of summer. Doug Shupe with AAA Southern California said that 3.6 million residents are anticipated to travel 50 miles or more this weekend, a nearly 4% increase from last year. He said the vast majority, 2.9 million, will be taking road trips beginning Thursday and continuing through Monday. The best times to leave for travel is "as early in the day as possible," Shupe said. Traffic is expected to pick up Thursday after noon, with the 5 Freeway predicted to be one of the busiest stretches from Los Angeles to Bakersfield. He said the trip usually takes 90 minutes, but on Friday afternoon it will likely take three hours. Shupe advised that vehicles be thoroughly inspected before taking to the roads, as AAA anticipates responding to 95,000 stranded roadside drivers in California. He also reminded drivers that even though gas prices are about 35 cents less per gallon than last year, gas stations away from the freeways will generally have lower prices. "Also remember, don't speed. Most vehicles will maximize fuel economy at 50 mph, and then it starts to drop after that. If you reduce your speeds by 5-10 mph, you can increase your fuel efficiency by 14 percent," Shupe said. With so many people on the road, Shupe is advising drivers to be on the lookout for roadside rescuers and stopped vehicles. "We're talking about tow-truck operators, but also police officers, firefighters, paramedics, Caltrans workers … if you can safely get out of that lane closest to the emergency vehicle, you should do that. If you can't get out of that lane, you need to slow way down," Shupe said. The California "Move Over Law" only applies to stopped emergency vehicles and trucks displaying flashing lights, but Shupe said AAA is working to expand that law to all stopped vehicles.

AAA says Memorial Day travel will break record, provides tips for travelers

ALTOONA, Pa. (WTAJ) — The Memorial Day holiday is expected to break travel records, according to AAA. May 22 to May 26 is considered the holiday travel period for Memorial Day. The company projects 45.1 million people will travel at least 50 miles from home over the holiday period. That's a 3.1% increase from last year, and a 5.4% increase from 2019. This year's increase equates to nearly 1.4 million additional travelers. 'In Pennsylvania alone, a little over 1.2 million in this region. We could have a couple million people coming through. Especially folks are heading, you know, from the Pittsburgh area to the Philly area, from north to south. And it's exciting to see something like that because that means there's a lot of people who are ready to get out and make some good memories for Memorial Day,' Jim Garrity, Director of Public Affairs for AAA East Central, said. Proposed bill would revamp Pennsylvania's energy plan for the future As with previous years, most travelers are opting to hit the road and drive. According to AAA, it's actually the preferred mode of transportation during holiday travel periods, with 87% of Memorial Day travelers choosing to take road trips. 'Think about the last couple of Memorial Days and add more people. That's what we should expect on the roadways coming up. Which is why it's important that even if you're traveling locally, give yourself plenty of time. The worst case scenario, you give yourself an extra hour out the door. Worst case scenario is that you're going to get to your destination exactly when you wanted to. The best case scenario is that you get there a little early,' Garrity said. Date Worst Travel Time Best Travel Time Thursday, May 22 1:00 – 9:00 p.m. Before Noon Friday, May 23 12:00 PM – 8:00 p.m. Before 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 24 2:00 PM – 6:00 p.m. Before Noon Sunday, May 25 1:00 PM – 5:00 p.m. Before 1:00 p.m. (Memorial Day) Monday, May 26 4:00 PM – 7:00 p.m. Before 2:00 p.m. Drivers are also reminded of Pennsylvania's Move Over Law when there are disabled or emergency vehicles on the side of the road.
