Ekurhuleni DA wants SIU to take over matter that auditor Mpho Mafole died investigating

JOHANNESBURG - The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ekurhuleni wants the Special Investigating Unit to take over the "missing billions" probe which the city's slain auditor, Mpho Mafole, died investigating. Earlier this year, the metro lost over R2 billion in revenue as a result of thousands of breached electricity accounts. Mafole, the city's former divisional head of forensic auditing, was looking into the matter before he was killed in a hail of bullets in June. "We cannot allow for a precedent to be set where certain professions in the public service, who work to combat corruption, are targeted. Whistle blowers, trying to end corruption, cannot become collateral, while the corrupt act with impunity. The DA will lay these charges, as we are committed to ensuring accountability and restoring integrity within our democratic society." Special Investigating Unit probes can only be triggered through a proclamation by the state president.

Family demands justice for slain Ekurhuleni municipality auditor Mpho Mafole
JOHANNESBURG - The family of slain Ekurhuleni municipality auditor Mpho Mafole are still struggling to come to terms with his death. Mafole was fatally shot on Monday while driving on the R23 Highway in Kempton Park. At the time of his death, Mafole was investigating a 'mysterious' R2 billion revenue shortfall from the metro's coffers. His funeral service is currently taking place at the Kempton Park Civic Centre. Emotions ran high as the family of Mafole came up to say their final words of goodbye. His fiancé and the mother of his three children Kele Masapo said that they still had a lot of plans for their family. You have shown me what love looks like and feels like.' Mafole's daughter Kgontse was inconsolable as she spoke about her father. "I still don't understand why you had to leave me so soon. Daddy, I wasn't ready to say goodbye, I thought you'd be here to watch me grow, to cheer me on and hold my hand when life got scary." Speakers at the funeral service have all demanded justice for Mafole's murder.

Mafole was killed in a hail of bullets on Monday while driving along the R23 highway in Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni. At the time of his death, he was only three months into his role as the Ekurhuleni municipality's head of forensic audits. His death has sparked concerns that his killing may be linked to alleged corruption in the metro During a recent interview with EWN, Ekurhuleni Mayor, Doctor Xhakaza, revealed that Mafole was close to uncovering the truth. 'It's one thing, you prepare a charge sheet for the suspended officials, you deliver it, and something happens. We don't want to draw up linkages, but if you are involved in this kind of work and you just get shot. It can't be a random thing.' No arrests have been made yet in connection with Mafole's murder.

Friends and family bid farewell to slain Ekurhuleni municipality auditor Mpho Mafole
JOHANNESBURG - Friends, family and colleagues of Mpho Mafole have come together to pay their final respects to the slain Ekurhuleni municipality auditor. The 44-year-old was gunned down on Monday while driving along the R23 highway in Kempton Park. At the time of his death, Mafole was investigating a mysterious R2 billion shortfall in the city's coffers. A funeral service for Mafole is currently taking place at the Kempton Park Civic Centre. Born in the township of Tembisa in 1981, Mafole matriculated at Edenvale High School. Mafole's career began at Ernst & Young, then the Auditor General of South Africa and finally at the Ekurhuleni municipality where he was the divisional head of corporate and forensic audit. He was the only child of his parents. He leaves behind his fiance and three children.
