Dev Patel is set to write, direct and star in period revenge drama The Peasant
Dev Patel is prepared to unleash his filmmaking skills once again. The Slumdog Millionaire star is all set to write, direct and star in an upcoming period revenge drama, The Peasant, set in medieval India. The Peasant marks Dev's second directorial as he reunites with Thunder Road Pictures, the company behind his breakout directorial debut Monkey Man. (Also read: Dev Patel graces cover of Vanity Fair magazine with Hollywood stars Nicole Kidman, Zendaya and Zoe Saldana) According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film will be a high-adrenaline revenge actioner with shades of Braveheart and John Wick mashed with the notes of King Arthur. Set in the 1300s, the film centers around a shepherd who unleashes a furious campaign against a group of mercenary knights who ravaged his community, revealing himself to be much more than an ordinary man. Fifth season, which is also financing and producing the drama, first collaborated on the project with screenwriter Will Dunn, who had previously worked on Ms Marvel. It was supposed to have an Italian setting with pope-connected story. The project had reportedly generated quite a buzz as it also landed on the prestigious 2023 Black List, the annual directory of most popular unproduced screenplays. However, now, under Dev's guidance, the film has shifted its plot to India to make it look more colourfully vibrant and almost mystical. The producers are hoping to turn the feature into a franchise, too. In Monkey Man, Dev portrays an underdog street fighter who ends up becoming a vigilante superhero. His character fights against the mighty and rich who oppress the downtrodden and are also responsible for his mother's death. Monkey Man also stars Sharlto Copley, Pitobash, Vipin Sharma, Sikandar Kher, Sobhita Dhulipala, Ashwini Kalsekar, Aditi Kalkunthe and Makarand Deshpande in key roles.

Saagar Shaikh praises Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy
Designer Hassan Sheheryar Yasin (HSY), who recently marked his Hollywood debut in the comedy series Deli Boys, interviewed the show's lead Saagar Shaikh on Instagram. He kicked off the session by asking Saagar about his experience working with Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy on the MCU show Ms Marvel. "She's so great. I didn't get to work with her as much as I would've liked to because she directed episodes 4 and 5 and all the reshoots. I was there in 4 and 5, but I was only there for the reshoots for six weeks," Saagar said. "She's so precise and calculated and knows exactly what she wants from a shot. And she's just a powerhouse within one person. She's amazing to work with." As for how he would define his character in Deli Boys, the 38-year-old actor said that Raj Dar is the exact opposite of his Ms Marvel character Aamir, who is a devout Muslim. "It's very, very different. My character [in Deli Boys] is a wild card. He's an older brother, but he's also a lazy guy who grew up rich and is okay just getting allowance for the rest of his life." During the interview, Saagar also shared his insights on craft and culture, and the impact of AI on art. "I think craft and culture go hand in hand," he said. "AI has no real culture; it's taking humanity out of art, and craft is all about humanity. Sometimes, you have an idea and while you're in the moment creating that idea, it allows you to implement other ideas. AI will never do that. It's just a robot. You tell it a command and it follows. It's not going to add humanity to the product." At the end of the interview, the American actor had a message for his fans in Pakistan. "I love you guys. I'm excited to visit Pakistan whenever I can. I hope to be there soon," he said. Also in conversation HSY's interview with Saagar comes after another brief conversation with Poorna Jagannathan, who began by defining the drama series The Night Of as her most seminal body of work. "The story was amazing. When we shot it, Trump wasn't in power. But when it came out four years later, Trump was in power, there was a Muslim ban, and Islamophobia was rampant," she said. "The cultural impact in the conversation that The Night Of started shifted the way that I viewed myself as an actor. I've always tried to pursue works that reverberate the way The Night Of has." She concluded her answer with a joke, "Which is why I'm in a cocaine drama now." Moving on to career influences, Poorna cited Nicole Kidman as an actor she draws inspiration from. "She's a method actor, and in Big Little Lies, she embodied the role. She mentioned two roles that she couldn't leave behind - Big Little Lies and Virginia Woolf adaptation The Hours. Whether she was on set or at home, she carried those characters everywhere. So working with her, watching her, and seeing her process influenced me as an actor. I went on to another set and I was a very different actor there because of her." Poorna, who has dabbled in both drama and comedy, mentioned that she doesn't look for comfort when it comes to her acting roles. "It's not so much my comfort level, it's what I take home. For comedy, I don't take anything home. But for drama, I do," she said. "I have a family, so it's been very important to strike a balance between life and work. I feel like comedy just helps me balance it out better. I don't take any of it home."

Mehwish Hayat set to make TV comeback
After almost a decade away from the world of drama serials, Mehwish Hayat will be returning to the small screen. Starring alongside Ahsan Khan and Hira Mani, Mehwish will be portraying a complex character in a serial that promises love, secrets, and suspense. The announcement of the actor's return to dramas has delighted her fans. "She's amazing on screen, gives every role her all," commented a user. "OMG, my favourite onscreen pair will be starring together. I'm super excited!" gushed another. Mehwish last starred in Dil Lagi opposite Humayun Saeed in 2016. In the show, Mehwish played Anmol, who falls into a clash with Humayun's Mohid over an eviction notice. However, affection begins to bloom between the two not long after. In addition, Mehwish has starred in a number of films, including Nabeel Qureshi's debut Na Maloom Afraad and Nadeem Baig's Punjab Nahi Jaungi, cementing herself as a frequent face on the big screen. The Pakistani star even made her Hollywood debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe series Ms Marvel, which also had Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy on board as a director. As of late, the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz recipient starred in the music video for Indian rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh's song Jatt Mehkma. The music video begins with well-to-do individuals and pairs entering a lavish gathering and quickly mingling until their attention is drawn to the hosts descending the stairs - Mehwish and the rapper. The announcement of the collaboration was made in a cheeky behind-the-scenes video, in which the two were dressed in their rich attire from the music video. However, it seems that this is as close to Bollywood as Mehwish will get, as in June last year, she explained why she prefers not to work in the neighbouring industry. "I received many offers from Bollywood, but I declined all of them," she revealed in a podcast. "I have countless opportunities here in Pakistan. I have been part of the revival of Pakistani cinema and some of its biggest and most successful films. I have received immense respect and love in my country," she added. "After gaining so much recognition and success in my own country, I felt that I should not accept offers from Bollywood. I enjoy my work here in Pakistan. People come to watch my films with their families, and that is a great achievement."
