CUSB likely to get silkworm research lab in collaboration with Japan's Teikyo University

1 2 Patna: Central University of South Bihar (CUSB) is likely to set up a silkworm research laboratory on its campus in collaboration with Teikyo University (Japan) soon. The proposed lab will be set up with the support of the Japanese govt's international research grant. Development of silkworm is a useful alternative model for toxicity assays, drug screening and immunological studies, since its metabolic pathways are similar to humans. The development of silkworm research facilities at CUSB will also be helpful for the growth of silk industry in Bihar, said CUSB's public relations officer Mudassir Alam. "Two teachers from the CUSB, Rizwanul Haque and Jawaid Ahsan, discussed the proposal in detail with Teikyo University scientists during their recent visit to Japan. There they visited the laboratory of senior research scientist Atsushi Miyashita at the Antifungal Immunobiology Lab of the Institute of Medical Mycology, and also learned the techniques of silkworm culture. This training will considerably help them in setting up the silkworm research facility at the CUSB," he said. They also discussed the feasibility of inking a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the two institutions following the visit of Japanese scientists to the CUSB. The proposed MoU will enable exchange of students and faculty members for studying different courses, teaching assignments and collaborative research work.
