Nine Chelsea players banished from club's official website

Chelsea are keen to offload at least nine more players before the transfer window slams shut and they have left the likes of Raheem Sterling and Ben Chilwell off the club website Nine Chelsea players have been left off the club's official website ahead of the new season, with former England star Raheem Sterling among them. Sterling and eight other Blues stars do not have a profile or photo in the senior section of the website. ‌ Chelsea have offloaded eight first-team players so far this summer, including Noni Madueke, Joao Felix and Kepa Arrizabalaga, and plenty more departures are expected before the transfer window slams shut. ‌ Sterling is one of several unwanted players that the Blues are keen to ship out and they have made it clear that he has no future at Stamford Bridge by leaving him off the website. Armando Broja and Lesley Ugochukwu are also absent, with the pair closing in on moves to Burnley. ‌ Academy graduate Alfie Gilchrist is another player who does not appear on the website, having spent last season out on loan at Sheffield United. The 21-year-old defender is reportedly attracting interest from clubs in the Championship and Saudi Arabia. Ben Chilwell, who joined Chelsea from Leicester for around £45million in 2020, has also been omitted after being frozen out by Enzo Maresca. Axel Disasi, Renato Veiga, Carney Chukwuemeka and David Datro Fofana are the other absentees. Interestingly, Mykhailo Mudryk does appear on the website, although he is the only player pictured in last season's kit. Mudryk is currently facing a potential four-year ban after he was charged by the FA over Anti-Doping Rule Violations. The winger failed a drugs test last November and has been out of action since, although Mudryk denies knowingly using a banned substance. "I can confirm that I have been notified that a sample I provided to The FA contained a banned substance," Mudryk said at the time. "This has come as a complete shock as I have never knowingly used any banned substances or broken any rules, and am working closely with my team to investigate how this could have happened. ‌ "I know that I have not done anything wrong and remain hopeful that I will be back on the pitch soon. I cannot say any more now due to the confidentiality of the process, but I will as soon as I can." With Mudryk currently sidelined and Madueke and Felix having been sold, Chelsea have strengthened their options out wide with the additions of Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund and Estevao Willian from Palmeiras.

Analysis: The Stats Behind Chelsea's Latest £48.5m Signing

Jamie Gittens Joins Chelsea: Speed, Skill and Long-Term Strategy Chelsea have completed the signing of Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund for £48.5 million, with a further £3.5 million potentially due in add-ons. The 20-year-old winger arrives at Stamford Bridge with a reputation for beating defenders and injecting pace into games. Having signed a seven-year contract, Gittens represents a long-term project for Chelsea rather than a quick fix. Advertisement Gittens has endured a disrupted rise. Injuries hampered his early years at Dortmund, but last season he broke through, delivering high-impact performances down the left flank. His speed and skill caught the eye during Dortmund's strong first half of the 2023-24 campaign, although form tailed off after managerial changes. 'He made his debut under Marco Rose (in April 2022), but since then it's been great development,' said Dortmund's Lars Ricken. 'We said, 'OK, we can develop him into a great player.'' Photo IMAGO With Jadon Sancho departed, Mudryk suspended, and Geovany Quenda arriving next summer, Chelsea required reinforcements out wide. Gittens now becomes one of the few senior wingers available to Enzo Maresca, joining Noni Madueke and the injury-prone Pedro Neto in the rotation. Advertisement Fitting into Maresca's Philosophy Gittens' success at Chelsea will hinge on adapting to Maresca's structure. His game thrives on freedom, space and confidence. At Dortmund, he averaged 9.3 take-ons per 90 minutes, the highest in the Bundesliga among wide players, converting 45 per cent of them. These are elite dribbling numbers and indicative of someone comfortable going one-on-one. 'He is a counter-attacking threat, but also capable of disrupting a low-block,' noted The Athletic's analysis. His ability to use both feet and get shots off under pressure makes him a multi-faceted forward, though questions remain over his off-ball work and defensive contributions. 'He does not contribute a lot without the ball and that's an area that will have to improve,' said Seb Stafford-Bloor. 'It will come with more experience, though.' Advertisement Chelsea's measured possession style and pressing schemes could require a steep learning curve for Gittens, who often thrived on chaos rather than control. Financial Engineering and Long-Term Vision Gittens' deal is another example of Chelsea's aggressive amortisation model. Though he signed a seven-year contract, both Premier League and UEFA rules cap amortisation at five years. That means his £48.5 million fee will cost Chelsea £11.1 million per year in PSR terms, despite being spread at £7.9 million annually in the club's official accounts. Wages remain undisclosed, but the total investment over the course of the deal will exceed £55 million. Chelsea's continued use of long-term contracts underlines their commitment to long-term value protection, while potentially testing the patience of fans who expect immediate impact. Advertisement Dortmund's Smart Profit and English Youth Pipeline Dortmund, meanwhile, are set to bank a near-complete profit from the transfer. Signed from Manchester City's academy in 2020, Gittens cost them very little and leaves five years later for a huge fee. No sell-on clause was inserted due to his age when he left City. Reading and City will receive modest solidarity payments of around £0.4 million each. Dortmund will retain the bulk of the £2.4 million solidarity fee, rounding off a deal that demonstrates the strength of their talent development pipeline. As Chelsea look to the future, Dortmund once again profit from nurturing a young English talent abroad and selling at peak value. Advertisement Our View – EPL Index Analysis This transfer is exactly what Chelsea fans have been crying out for. Gittens brings pace, directness and unpredictability, and those traits have been missing since Eden Hazard's departure. Sure, he is young and raw, but so were Reece James and Levi Colwill at one point. What matters is the willingness to take on responsibility and make things happen, which Gittens clearly has. The fact that he's already producing numbers like 9.3 take-ons per 90 in a major league at 20 is a huge statement. We've been far too reliant on stop-start players like Mudryk and underwhelming options like Madueke. With Sancho gone and Estevao still a project, Gittens gives us immediate thrust on the wing. Enzo Maresca's system might demand more structure, but with time and coaching, Gittens could explode. Fans understand this won't be perfect from day one, but watching someone take defenders on with confidence is going to lift Stamford Bridge. This deal feels like a smart mix of data-led recruitment and football sense. It is another step towards reshaping Chelsea's identity.

Chelsea boss Maresca 'trusts' Mudryk after doping charge

Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca is preparing his side to face Flamengo in the Club World Cup on Friday (John MACDOUGALL) Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca said Thursday he still maintained trust in Mykhailo Mudryk after the Ukrainian winger was charged by England's Football Association with violating anti-doping rules, but confirmed the club were looking to strengthen in his position. "'Mischa' is a Chelsea player. As long as he is a Chelsea player, I will trust all the Chelsea players," Maresca told reporters in Philadelphia ahead of his team's Club World Cup meeting with Flamengo on Friday. Advertisement Mudryk has not played for Chelsea since November 28 following his provisional suspension by the FA for an "adverse finding in a routine urine test" in December. He could face a potential ban of up to four years under FA rules. Mudryk is not with the Chelsea squad for the tournament in the United States and Maresca said he has had no contact with the player since the UEFA Conference League final win over Real Betis in Poland late last month. "The last time I spoke with 'Mischa' was in Poland and he was quite good. "Since that day I have not spoken with him so I don't know how he is now but for sure in the next days, in the next weeks, we are going to have contact with him." Advertisement Mudryk was signed from Shakhtar Donetsk in January 2023 for 100 million euros ($115m) but his time at Chelsea has been dogged by inconsistency, with erratic performances only occasionally off-set by flashes of his ability. He has scored just 10 goals in 73 appearances in all competitions for the Blues. - Wary of Flamengo - Maresca revealed that he is hoping to sign a new wide attacker before the start of the Premier League season. "We had already one entire season almost without 'Mischa', last season, and we tried to find different solutions with some of the academy players, like Tyrique (George), but we are going to decide to go for a winger, and not because of 'Mischa'," Maresca said. Advertisement "It is quite clear that it is a position that we need to improve." Chelsea can expect to face challenging conditions on Friday against Flamengo, with heat and humidity rising in Philadelphia in recent days and the match kicking off at 2:00 pm local time. The game is likely to be key in deciding who tops Group D with both teams fresh from winning 2-0 in their opening match at the tournament -- Chelsea got the better of Los Angeles FC in Atlanta while Flamengo defeated Esperance. Maresca said the conditions could favour the Brazilian giants and added that he would make several changes to his line-up -- the likes of Enzo Fernandez, Malo Gusto and new signing Liam Delap are among those pushing for starts. Advertisement "It is not easy because of the temperature. This is the reason why we are going to try to rotate players," the coach added. "Unfortunately for us Brazilian teams are more used to playing with this kind of temperature, but it doesn't matter, we will try to do our best and win the game." Flamengo, coached by former Atletico Madrid and Chelsea player Filipe Luis, are top of the Brazilian league and have lost only one of their last 16 outings in all competitions. "They are a very good team, they play nice football, it is nice to watch them," Maresca said. "They have many good players. Watching them, you realise they are a very good team, very good organisation. "Like any Brazilian team they are full of quality, technical players, and we will need to be at our best to win the game." as/ea

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca yet to speak to Mykhailo Mudryk after doping charges

The 24-year-old is facing a lengthy ban after the Football Association announced on Friday it had charged the player. Mudryk has not played since being suspended last December after testing positive for a prohibited substance. The Chelsea manager has not spoken to Mudryk since hearing of the charge he faces (Rafal Oleksiewicz/PA) He was last seen in public at the Europa Conference League final in Wroclaw last month having attended in a private capacity. Mudryk is not allowed to train with the squad, who are currently at the Club World Cup in the United States. Speaking ahead of the Blues' second match of the tournament against Flamengo in Philadelphia on Friday, Maresca said: 'I spoke with 'Misha' in Poland when we played the Conference League final but I didn't speak with him since that time. 'To be honest, I didn't see the news. They communicated (it to) me last night. There is nothing more that I can add at the moment because I don't have more information.' Chelsea did not officially comment after the charges were announced but have previously said they are supporting the player. Maresca said: 'The last time I spoke with Misha he was quite good. I didn't see him worried, or at least I didn't see him not good. It was OK. 'I don't know how he is now but for sure in the next days, weeks, we're going to have a talk.' Maresca says he is planning for Noni Madueke to remain a Chelsea player (Rafal Oleksiewicz/PA) Chelsea are in the market for a new winger this summer, and have been heavily linked with Borussia Dortmund's Jamie Gittens, but Maresca says that is not because of the Mudryk situation. The Italian said: 'We had already one entire season, almost, without Misha. 'We've decided to go for a winger not because of Misha. It's something quite clear, it's a position that we need to improve.' Maresca dismissed speculation over the future of another winger in England international Noni Madueke, with reports Arsenal are monitoring his situation. Maresca said: 'Noni is our player. In this moment, you can read much speculation about many players, but Noni is our player. We consider Noni our player for next season.' Maresca is set to make changes to his side for the Flamengo clash at Lincoln Financial Field due to the anticipated heat. The Blues, who opened their campaign in Group D with a 2-0 win over LAFC, are set to face the Brazilians at 2pm local time, with the temperature forecast to reach 28C. Maresca said: 'It's not easy because of the temperature. This is the reason why we're going to try to rotate players. 'Unfortunately for us, as a Brazilian team, they are more used to playing in this temperature – but it doesn't matter. We're going to try to do our best to win the game.'
