'I won't budge even an inch!': Has Akmal emerges stronger after a 2-hour police interrogation?
SUCH is the immediate reaction of firebrand UMNO Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Salleh following a two-hour statement giving session at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters in Kuala Lumpur which stretches to the wee hours of this morning (Aug 16). This could possibly be the case of the DAP Socialist Youth (DAPSY) having heeded the call by the party's secretary-general Anthony Loke Siew Fook to lodge 'nationwide police report' to stem the notoriety of the Merlimau state assemblyman over flying the Jalur Gemilsng upside down incident. 'The struggle is not over, UMNO Youth will continue to stand at the forefront for the sovereignty of the country,' read a statement issued by the movement. 'UMNO Youth will not budge an inch even if pressured, threatened or intimidated. As long as blood flows in the body, the dignity of the country will continue to be defended!' 'No fear, no surrender' Added the Melaka state EXCO for rural development, agriculture and food security who is renowned for his race and religion defender antic in a personal note: 'As we approach the end of the age, the righteous will be looked down upon while the wicked is worshipped. 'This is the responsibility of all of us for the sake of religion, race and our homeland. It's easy to talk but difficult to implement. We shall not budge.' In a Facebook post yesterday afternoon, the Russia-trained doctor had stated that an investigating officer from Bukit Aman had contacted him to have his statement recorded at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters at 11pm on Friday (Aug 15). 'If this is the price I've to pay to defend the honour of this country, I'm willing to fight till the end,' he declared. 'No way would I fear their tribes! No fear, no surrender!' Prior to that, DAP has strongly condemned Akmal's action of leading a march and demonstration in front of a hardware shop in Kepala Batas on Thursday (Aug 14) despite warnings from the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and the Penang Police chief not to hold any gatherings. 'The action is a form of bullying and intimidation against the trader amid on-going investigation and that he has apologised for the mistake in installing the flag,' Loke who is also the Transport Minister had pointed out. 'Actions like this go beyond the limits of the law and the norms of the multi-racial society in Malaysia. Appropriate punishments must be meted out for such extreme acts.' DAP had wanted the police to act under Section 503 of the Penal Code which is criminal intimidation; Section 504 of the Penal Code (deliberately issuing defamatory statements with the intention of causing disorder); and Section 505 of the Penal Code (issuing statements that cause public mischief). – Aug 16, 2025

DAP orders nationwide police reports, accuses Umno Youth of scaring off local traders and subverting law with Kepala Batas protest
Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Threads WhatsApp Telegram KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 15): The DAP today condemned Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Salleh for leading a march and demonstration in front of a hardware shop in Kepala Batas yesterday, despite police warnings against holding gatherings. In a statement, the party said the act amounted to bullying and intimidation of the trader, who had already apologised over the flag incident and was still under investigation. 'Akmal's decision to disregard police warnings is also a direct challenge to the rule of law and a disruption of public order, causing unease among traders in the surrounding area and forcing them to close their businesses earlier than usual,' said DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke Siew Fook. 'Acts like this go beyond the limits of the law and the norms of Malaysia's multiracial society. Appropriate punishment must be meted out for such extreme behaviour.' DAP Socialist Youth wings nationwide have since been instructed to lodge police reports under Section 503 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation, Section 504 for intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of the peace, and Section 505 for statements conducing to public mischief. Loke said reports would also be made under Section 507B of the Penal Code for causing harassment, distress, fear or anxiety, and Section 507C for uttering words likely to cause such effects. 'I reiterate that the Jalur Gemilang, as a symbol of national sovereignty, must be flown correctly and with full respect. However, threats, bullying and inciting tension are not the way to resolve this matter,' Loke added. Yesterday, the police had urged the cancellation of a planned gathering in Bertam here today over the issue of Malaysian flag, to prevent any confrontation between opposing groups. PDRM said the move was to safeguard the safety of the local community and maintain public order, after both Umno Youth and DAP planned to host events on the matter. The controversy began when a 59-year-old hardware shop owner in Kepala Batas, Penang, was investigated after the Jalur Gemilang was seen hanging upside-down outside his premises. The shop owner has reportedly said it was an unintentional mistake made while measuring a flagpole, which he corrected soon after. Umno Youth however proceeded with its protest, with hundreds attending, along with a counter-protest by civil society Lawyers for Liberty. — Malay Mail

Penang DAP call for action against Akmal for defying police directive
KEPALA BATAS: Penang DAP has urged police to act against Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Salleh for leading a procession here yesterday, which the party claims defied police instructions and disrupted public order. State DAP chairman Steven Sim described the march as provocative and unlawful, saying it undermined efforts to foster unity during the Merdeka month. "DAP Penang urges police to take action against him to send a message that such provocations will not be tolerated in this country, especially during the Merdeka month. "We will lodge a police report over today's (yesterday's) incident," he said. Sim said the procession was held despite a directive from the Penang police chief advising against any gatherings in the area yesterday. He said that while DAP respected the police's instruction and refrained from mobilising members and supporters, only local representatives were present in Kepala Batas to distribute the Jalur Gemilang as part of Merdeka-month celebrations. Yesterday afternoon, Akmal led more than 300 Umno, Bersatu and Pas supporters on a 1.4km march with the Jalur Gemilang in hand, chanting "Pertahan Jalur Gemilang" and "Merdeka" along the way. The event followed a recent controversy involving an upside-down Jalur Gemilang at a hardware store here. On Wednesday, state police chief Datuk Azizee Ismail warned the public against joining the gathering, urging them to stay away for safety reasons and to preserve public order, and to await the prosecutor's decision on the case.

Malaysia must embrace unity and diversity, says MCA's Roger Yapp
PETALING JAYA: Malaysia belongs to all its people, and it is imperative to build a future based on understanding, trust, and common goals, not fear or division, says Roger Yapp. The MCA ethnic and religious relations bureau deputy chairman urged political leaders to adopt an inclusive and constructive spirit in their statements. This response follows Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Salleh's remark that "Malaysia will always be the land of the Malays." "When someone says that Malaysia is 'forever' the land of the Malays, did they ask the native people of Sabah and Sarawak? "Have they considered the voices of the Kadazan, Dusun, Iban, and Bidayuh? "I have never disputed Articles 152 and 153 of the Federal Constitution, which establish the Malay language as the national language and the responsibility given to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to safeguard the special position of the Malays and Bumiputeras. "However, we must also recognise that Malaysia was formed in 1963 with the participation of Sabah, Sarawak, and Singapore (which later left), together with the Federation of Malaya," he said in a statement on Monday (May 5). Yapp reminded that Malaysia is a diverse country formed by various races and regions, including Sabah and Sarawak. He added that respecting the special position of the Malays does not mean denying the rights and contributions of other races. He emphasised that the Chinese, Indians, and indigenous communities in Sabah and Sarawak have also contributed to the country's development. "They were born, raised, worked, and paid taxes here. They also sing the national anthem and respect the national flag." "Article 153 also states the responsibility to protect the legitimate interests of other communities. This is the spirit of the social contract that is the foundation of the formation of our country," he said.
