FORMER national hockey player and Olympian Muhammad Khairy Nunis Abdullah, better known as Kevin Christopher Nunis, was buried this morning at the Taman Sri Sinar Muslim cemetery at 10.45 am. His remains were first brought to Surau Silaturrahim Taman Segambut SSPK for funeral prayers, attended by around 200 people, including family, friends, colleagues, and local residents. Among those present were his wife, Rahimah Awang Mohd, their three children, and grandchildren. Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) president Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal and National Athletes Welfare Foundation (YAKEB) chairman Datuk Ahmad Shapawi Ismail also paid their respects. Subahan described Nunis' passing as a significant loss to Malaysian hockey. 'His contributions were immense, not just as a player but also as a coach in the National Hockey Development Programme (NHDP),' he told Bernama. Nunis, a Negeri Sembilan native, passed away at Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) yesterday at 6.45 pm after battling a blood infection for several months. A key player in the 1980s national squad, he represented Malaysia at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, Asian Games in India (1982) and South Korea (1986), and SEA Games in Singapore (1983), Jakarta (1987), and Kuala Lumpur (1989).

Muhammad Khairy Nunis, from Negri Sembilan, breathed his last at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital at about 6:45 pm yesterday after several months of treatment due to a blood infection. (Instagram pic) PETALING JAYA : Former national hockey player and Olympian Kevin Nunis died in hospital today at the age of 65. His brother, Graig Nunis, said in an Instagram post that Kevin breathed his last at Hospital Kuala Lumpur this evening. Nunis had been recuperating from surgery on May 21 the second since he was diagnosed with a bacterial infection in the blood last month, according to the national athletes foundation (Yakeb). He was discharged on May 2 but was admitted again two weeks later after his health deteriorated and underwent another surgery. Nunis, who was born in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan, later converted to Islam and took the name Muhammad Khairy Nunis Abdullah. His son, Muhammad Karl Iskandar Nunis, a television sports journalist, said final rites for his father would be performed at 8am tomorrow. Nunis was a member of Malaysia's hockey team at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics and also represented Malaysia at the 1982 and 1986 Asian Games in India and Korea. After retiring, he ventured into coaching and once coached the Terengganu and Pahang hockey teams. He was also head coach of the Malaysian Hockey Confederation's national hockey development programme.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 28 (Bernama) -- Former hockey player and national Olympian Muhammad Khairy Nunis Abdullah or Kevin Christopher Nunis passed away today at the age of 65. This was confirmed by his son Muhammad Karl Iskandar Nunis who said his father breathed his last at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) this evening, after several months of treatment for a blood infection. "Our father returned to Rahmatullah at 6.46 pm this evening at HKL," he said when contacted by Bernama today. bootstrap slideshow Muhammad Karl, who is also a sports journalist at a pay television company, said his late father would be bathed and prayed over at Surau Sillaturrahim, Taman Segambut SPPK here at 8 am tomorrow. Muhammad Khairy Nunis was a national hockey player who competed in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics and also represented the country at the Asian Games in India (1982) and South Korea (1986). After his retirement as a national athlete in 1989, the Negeri Sembilan native continued his career as a coach for Terengganu and Pahang and was an assistant coach for the national junior squad in 1994.
