ALOR SETAR, May 27 (Bernama) -- The Kedah Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) seized over RM250,000 worth of shoes and bags, suspected to be counterfeit items, near the Bukit Kayu Hitam border checkpoint yesterday. Its director, Muhammad Nizam Jamaludin, said the seizure was made during a joint operation with a team from the General Operations Force (PGA) at around 8 pm, during which two suspicious lorries were inspected. 'Inspection revealed a number of items wrapped in gunny sacks, suspiciously placed at the back of the lorries.

KPDN probes wholesaler for supplying LPG to unlicensed retailer

ALOR STAR: The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) has launched an investigation into a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) wholesaler for supplying the controlled item to an unlicensed retailer. Kedah KPDN branch director Muhammad Nizam Jamaludin said the offence was uncovered after its enforcement team raided a retail premises on 17 May under 'Ops Gasak 2025'. "The enforcement team took action against a retail business operating in Alor Star for selling a controlled item, LPG, without a valid licence or authorisation from the Controller of Supplies. "The team subsequently seized 20 LPG cylinders and purchase documents for further investigation. The total estimated value of the confiscated items is RM2,494," he said in a statement. Nizam said that following the seizure, the ministry launched an investigation on Tuesday into the wholesaler for supplying controlled LPG to an unauthorised party. The case is being investigated under Section 21 of the Control of Supplies Act 1961 [Act 122], under which any individual found guilty may be fined up to RM1 million. For subsequent offences, the penalty may increase to a fine of up to RM3 million or imprisonment for a term not exceeding three years, or both. For companies, the fine may be up to RM2 million and, for repeat offences, up to RM5 million. The ministry reminded the public that any individual intending to trade in or store controlled items must obtain valid permission, or a relevant licence or permit.

ALOR STAR: The Kedah Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry is stepping up enforcement operations in the lead-up to the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2025 (Lima '25), which will take place from May 20 to 24. Its director, Muhammad Nizam Jamaludin, said a total of 190 enforcement officers will be deployed across the state, with a strong presence in Langkawi to monitor business compliance during the international event. He said the ministry would focus on key areas, including price labelling, profiteering, the availability of controlled items, accuracy of weighing equipment, and halal-related matters. "Our inspections will cover restaurants, eateries, supermarkets, grocery outlets, public and wet markets, morning and night markets, vehicle rental services, hotels, petrol stations, and areas frequented by tourists," he said in a statement today. He said officers would maintain a visible presence at these locations, supported by ministry-branded vehicles, to foster a safe and ethical business environment throughout the event period. Nizam also announced the activation of several targeted operations, including Op Menu 2025, which will ensure clear and accurate pricing at food premises and restaurants. "This is important to make sure that consumers are not misled and that traders practise ethical and transparent business conduct," he said. He said Op Kesan 2025 would focus on compliance with the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011, particularly regulations introduced in 2018 to determine unreasonable profiteering. Another operation, Op Indah 2025, will focus on tourist hotspots, aimed at strengthening consumer confidence by promoting clear price displays. The ministry will also activate a 24-hour complaint response mechanism to ensure that grievances, especially those from foreign visitors, are addressed quickly while they are still in Langkawi. "We strongly warn traders against arbitrarily raising prices. "We urge all businesses to comply with the law," he said.
