3 dead in Lahad Datu pickup-trailer crash
LAHAD DATU: Three men were killed when the pickup truck they were travelling in collided with a trailer carrying palm oil at Batu 16 along Jalan Lahad Datu–Sandakan last night.
The crash left all three trapped in the vehicle.
They were pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.
The deceased have been identified as the pickup driver, Mohd Azizi, 28; rear passenger, Muhammad Zulkhairi Ismail, 29; and front passenger, Mohd Rasman Ahmat Kechil, 28.
Lahad Datu Fire and Rescue Station chief Sumsoa Rashid said his team received an emergency call at 8.52pm.
"A total of 12 personnel, along with a fire engine and an Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) unit, were deployed to the scene, about 30km from the station.
"Upon arrival, we found that the crash involved a palm oil trailer and an Isuzu D-Max pickup truck. The three men were pinned inside the vehicle and were extricated before being confirmed dead," he said when contacted today.
The 61-year-old trailer driver sustained injuries and was taken to hospital by a Health Ministry ambulance.
The bodies were handed over to police for further action.
The operation ended at 12.40am.
