Cusat students seek to improve campus facilities
Kochi: Students of Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat), under the banner of Students' Federation of India (SFI), marched to administrative block on Thursday, pressing a charter of demands aimed at improving campus facilities and addressing student grievances. According to SFI unit president Mohammed Muhsin, demands were made after campaigning in classrooms and seeking responses from students about their needs. Demands included standardizing hostel fees across campus at Rs 320 and filling vacancies by appointing permanent faculty members and lab assistants in various departments. They also demanded an immediate stop to collection of additional university fees for National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) courses beyond regular fees paid by students. Other demands included urgent repairs to dilapidated campus roads, restoring non-functional equipment in departments such as biotechnology and school of engineering (SOE) and ensuring revaluation results are announced before supplementary examinations. Students also sought early access to open-air auditorium and provision of Wi-Fi in all hostels. Pointing to delays in issuing provisional certificates, SFI said this was causing difficulties for students seeking higher education and urged timely issuance. They also demanded that hostel allotment system revert to earlier method where students had more choice and called for installation of lifts and ramps at SOE to make campus disabled-friendly. Students have also sought removal of fines imposed on students who visit other hostels for academic purposes. "We have also submitted the demands before university registrar for urgent consideration," said Muhsin. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). BD appoints Bilal Muhsin as president of new connected care group
This story was originally published on MedTech Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily MedTech Dive newsletter. Name: Bilal Muhsin New role: President of connected care, BD Previous role: Chief operating officer, Masimo BD said Monday that it has named Bilal Muhsin as president of its new connected care segment. The hire is effective as of July 2. The company is creating the segment as part of the restructuring it announced in February. Connected care will house BD's medication management and advanced patient monitoring devices, giving it control of products including the Pyxis line of automated dispensing systems and Alaris infusion pumps. Muhsin has joined BD to help set up the new segment. Reporting to BD CEO Tom Polen, the executive will lead strategy development to support the transition to the revised structure over the next several months. Polen said in a statement that Muhsin's 'extensive and deep knowledge of connected care technologies, software and informatics strategies' will help BD as it advances its connected care strategy. Muhsin developed the knowledge during his 25 years at Masimo, a medtech company that built a portfolio of patient monitoring devices around pulse oximeter technology. Masimo told investors last month that Muhsin was resigning as chief operating officer to pursue other opportunities. The company, which did not replace Muhsin when he left on July 1, disclosed the change alongside an overhaul of its commercial leadership. At BD, Muhsin will take over a connected care business that the company has grown through deals such as the $1.53 billion buyout of Parata Systems and $93 million acquisition of Medkeeper. The pharmacy robotics business that BD has built through the recent acquisitions sits alongside the Pyxis franchise that the company added to its portfolio through the $12.2 billion takeover of Carefusion in 2015. The Pyxis business received a warning letter from the Food and Drug Administration last year and is now entering an important period. BD recently began shipping a new Pyxis device, Polen said at a Goldman Sachs event last month. The CEO said the launch could cause market share to 'shift incrementally' and presents an opportunity to charge a price premium. The murder and legacy of the world's first openly gay imam
'As a Muslim, you always question: 'Have I pleased God, or have I angered him or her?'' Imam Muhsin Hendricks of Cape Town, South Africa, was the world's first openly gay imam. In early February, he was shot and killed and the identities and motives of those responsible are still unknown. Reporter Jamie Fullerton met and visited Imam Muhsin at his Inner Circle mosque. He tells Hannah Moore that in person Muhsin was 'pure love' and describes the inclusive community-building and wedding officiating that the imam undertook, as well as the scriptural foundation that his practice was based upon. Imam Muhsin chose 'faith over fear' and this led him into debates with Islamic leaders as well as to support sessions right across the African continent, where he helped other queer Muslims reach a place of self-acceptance. Now, in the wake of the imam's killing, Jamie explains that it is unclear who will continue his work.
