Ex-PM Sheikh Hasina condemns Gopalganj violence, calls it pre-planned conspiracy by NCP-CA Md Yunus

Dhaka, July 17 (UNI) Post the violent clashes in Bangladesh's Gopalganj region between members of the National Citizen Party (NCP) and the now-banned Awami League, which led to four AL members getting killed and two dozen injured, in firing by the army and police, ex-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has slammed the incident, claiming that the attack was a pre-planned conspiracy by Chief Advisor Mohammed Yunus and his "mob" gang. Issuing a statement, the former premier called upon the citizens to unite in the spirit of progressive, democratic, modern, and non-communal ideals to "crush the tyranny of murderer-fascist Yunus", 'the godfather of mob terrorism', and to protect Bangladesh, reports Daily Republic. Extending her condolences to the departed, and wishing speedy recovery to the injured, she also expressed her gratitude to the 'brave people of Gopalganj—born of a heroic land—for standing up and resisting Yunus.' The NCP comprises student members who had orchestrated the July-August protests of last year which led to her ouster on August 5, 2024. Accusing the NCP and the Yunus administration of attacking Bengali identity itself, by attacking the residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the memorial museum of the 1971 Liberation War, and 'desecrating' the national flag, anthem, and constitution, Hasina accused the two parties of perpetrating widespread 'genocide, police killings, rape, robbery, mugging, and looting.' 'The public enemy, murderer-fascist, anti-national, and patron of terrorism, Yunus — through his mob terrorism and the so-called NCP—has instigated newly emerged militant-terrorists who, following the pattern of August 5, again mobilised under the banner of a so-called 'March to Gopalganj' programme with the intent to demolish the resting place of Bangabandhu in Tungipara, the very heart of Bengali identity,' she added. She further critiqued the NCP and CA Yunus' attack on Mujibism (the tenets of Bangladesh's political identity), and said 'Bangabandhu and Bangladesh are one and inseparable. An attack on either will not go unanswered by the Bengali nation. And today, the people of Gopalganj did not sit silently. In the struggle to protect Bangladesh and Bangabandhu, the brave people of Gopalganj, despite all odds, defied tear gas, bullets, and repression, and defended Bangabandhu's mausoleum. 'The mercenary forces of the murderer-fascist Yunus opened fire indiscriminately on innocent civilians in Gopalganj. In response, several have been martyred by law enforcement gunfire, and countless others have been seriously injured. This despicable terrorism by the state-sponsored forces and goons unleashed by murderer-fascist Yunus surpasses even medieval barbarity. 'I strongly condemn, protest, and denounce this horrific massacre and the state-patronised terrorism,' she said.

Bangladesh: 4 Dead, Curfew Imposed After Clashes Rock Sheikh Hasina's Hometown

However, the newspaper citing an unnamed local news reporter highlighted that ordinary people and even former prime minister Khaleda Zia's Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) joined hands with local Awami League leaders and activists to prevent the NCP. Yunus squarely blamed Awami League for the violence. 'Preventing young citizens from peacefully holding a rally to commemorate the one-year anniversary of their revolutionary movement is a shameful violation of their fundamental rights," he said, blaming Hasina's political party the Awami League and its student group for Wednesday's violence. 'This heinous act — allegedly carried out by members of the banned Awami League's Chhatra League and AL activists — will not go unpunished. The perpetrators must be swiftly identified and held fully accountable. There is no place for such violence against any citizen of Bangladesh," the chief adviser's office said. Two of those killed were identified as Dipto Saha, 25, and Ramazan Kazi, 18, according to reports. Both were brought dead to Gopalganj General Hospital with gunshot wounds, while at least nine others were admitted with bullet injuries, doctors said. The violence prompted the deployment of four extra platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), amounting to nearly 200 personnel, as the authorities vowed strict action against those involved in the clashes. A 22-hour curfew was imposed in Gopalganj from 8 pm Wednesday, Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus's office said, warning that those behind the attacks would be held accountable. Did NCP Stoke Tensions? Speeches by NCP's top leaders used phrases like 'removing Mujib's legacy" and 'freeing Gopalganj of Mujibism" and even going to the extent of the leaders saying that they ensure 'justice for themselves" if police are failing to react. Protesters attacked police vehicles and the car of the local administrative head, and also targeted the NCP convoy, prompting security forces to open fire, reports said. Despite the chaos, the NCP went ahead with its rally on a vandalised stage, using broken sound equipment, with convenor Nahid Islam vowing they would seek justice on their own if the authorities failed. Islam, along with key NCP leader Hasnat Abdullah, openly pledged to tear down the remaining symbols of what they called 'Mujib's legacy". Islam also warned that if justice over the assault on their rally was delayed, the NCP would return to 'liberate Gopalganj from Mujibism" themselves. 'We are going to bring our justice if the police forces fail," said Islam.

Bangladesh's National Citizen Party hopes to be fully registered by June 15

Dhaka, June 9 (UNI) The National Citizen Party (NCP) – the official political unit of Bangladesh's Students Against Discrimination (SAD) which led toppled the Sheikh Hasina government in August last year– is hoping to complete its full registration as an official political party by June 15, a top leader said on Monday. "We hope to complete the registration application process by the 15th of this month, which is required for participating in elections," NCP's chief organiser Sarjis Alam said while speaking to reporters here. The 'students'' party, has already formed committees in 100 upazilas across around 22 districts and is working to establish offices as part of the registration requirements. "We are following official procedures and intend to complete registration within the time set for all political parties," he said. Prioritising to build itself from a grassroot level, the NCP leader said 'Once the structure is in place from the capital to the village level, we will be better prepared for electoral activities." Along with the Jamaat, the NCP supported the Chief Advisor Mohammed Yunus led interim government's announcement of elections in April 2026, much to the opposition of the nation's primary political group – the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) – which called the decision a "sham". While the party has repeatedly claimed to be a centrist non-religious party, its full support and cooperation with hardline Islamic groups like the Jamaat e Islami, and the Hefazat-e-Islam, and its opposition to the secular and pluralist tenets of Mujibism (the core principles of Bangladesh's constitution and political identity) have called into question the party's true ideological affiliations.
