Rainwater seepage floods Acharya Atre Chowk station on Mumbai Metro Line 3; MMRC suspends services on affected stretch

MUMBAI: The under-construction Acharya Atre Chowk station on Mumbai's fully underground Metro Line 3 (Colaba–Bandra–SEEPZ) corridor experienced water seepage on following a spell of intense rainfall on Monday. The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRC), which is executing the project, confirmed the incident and said the affected section is not yet open to the public. The incident occurred at an entry/exit structure located along Dr. Annie Besant Road. According to MMRC, 'Due to the sudden and intense rainfall today, water seepage was reported at the under-construction entry/exit structure of Acharya Atre Chowk station. The incident occurred when the RCC water-retaining wall constructed at the entry/exit collapsed due to a sudden ingress of water from an adjoining utility.' While the seepage was limited to an area under construction, as a precautionary measure, train services between Worli and Acharya Atre Chowk have been temporarily suspended. 'However, the train services from Aarey JVLR to Worli are not affected and are running regularly,' the agency clarified. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2025: Steel Suppliers From Mexico At Lowest Prices (Take A Look) Steel Suppliers | search ads Search Now Undo This incident has raised concerns about waterproofing systems and drainage readiness on the high-profile Rs 37,000-crore corridor, especially with monsoon season approaching. MMRC assured that safety protocols are being followed and urgent repair work is in progress. 'Our engineering and safety teams are on-site and working on a war footing to address the issue. We deeply regret the inconvenience caused to our commuters and request their patience and cooperation. Safety remains our highest priority, and services will resume only after all systems are fully secure and operational,' the statement said.

Dharavi to be a major Metro interchange with 2nd station

Mumbai: Dharavi, already part of the Metro network via the under-construction Metro Line 3 (Colaba-BKC-Aarey), may soon see the addition of a second Metro station. As part of the Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP), plans are being drawn up to extend Metro Line 11 (Wadala-CSMT) into Dharavi, setting the stage for a significant Metro interchange that could enhance east-west and north-south connectivity across Mumbai. The extension to Dharavi will have two stations, including one at Sion. Sources said Metro Line 11 is likely to be extended westward from Wadala to connect with the existing Metro Line 3 station in Dharavi. Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL), which is executing the Metro 3 project, has also been appointed to construct Metro Line 11, running from Wadala to Hutatma Chowk via Byculla. The project, estimated to cost Rs 16,000 crore, is currently in the planning phase. "For years, Dharavi has lacked proper connectivity. A Metro hub here means better access to jobs, colleges, and hospitals across the city," said Fatima Khan, a long-time Dharavi resident. As a Metro interchange hub, Dharavi will serve as a central mobility hub for the city. "There is a proposal to build a Dharavi Central Metro station, which could become the main interchange point for commuters from all directions," said a source involved with the project. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 허리 아플 때마다 파스만 붙이셨다면? 하루 3번, 붙이기만 해도 시원해집니다! pt 더 알아보기 Undo "The station is being designed as a multi-level structure that connects the city's north-south and east-west corridors." The interchange will allow commuters from the eastern suburbs to switch to Metro Line 3, enabling smooth access to BKC and the airport without relying on road transport, the source said, adding that this will drastically cut travel time and ease congestion on road corridors. "If this interchange comes up, I can get from Sion to BKC or the airport without changing multiple modes. It's going to save so much time," said Ravindra Patil, an office-goer from Chunabhatti. Planners also aim to integrate feeder bus routes and infrastructure for walking and cycling to improve last-mile connectivity. "It's more than just a Metro station," the official added. "The goal is to build a future-ready mobility hub that brings Metro, rail, buses, and non-motorised transport under one roof." To support this, feeder routes are also being planned, connecting local neighbourhoods with Metro and train stations.

PM Modi to inaugurate last segment of Metro 3 in August: Maharashtra CM Fadnavis

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday (May 9, 2025) inaugurated Phase 2A of the underground Mumbai Metro Line 3, connecting the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) to Acharya Atre Chowk, and announced that the final segment of the corridor will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in August. Describing Metro Line 3 as an 'engineering marvel,' Mr. Fadnavis said the project overcame significant geological and logistical challenges during its execution. 'We came from under the Mithi River and have built metro stations in congested areas like Girgaon. Only two stations remain, and once completed, Line 3 will be fully operational,' he said. Following the inauguration, Mr. Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde undertook a ride on the newly completed stretch. The 9.77-km segment, comprising six stations, received safety clearance earlier this week from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety. It will be opened to the public from Saturday. The Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ corridor (Metro Line 3) is the first fully underground metro project in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). The first phase, linking Aarey to BKC, became operational in October 2024. The final stretch, from Acharya Atre Chowk to Colaba (Phase 2B), spans 10.99 km and includes 11 stations, ultimately connecting Cuffe Parade to the city's central business districts. 'Since 2022, we have accelerated the execution of all metro lines. By next year, 50 km of new lines will be added, followed by another 50 km the year after, significantly enhancing public transport in the MMR,' Mr. Fadnavis said. According to Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (MMRCL), the fully operational Line 3 is expected to serve approximately 13 lakh passengers daily, with each eight-coach train accommodating up to 2,500 commuters. Since its launch, the Aarey-BKC stretch has recorded a cumulative ridership of over 41.6 lakh, with a daily average of 20,030 passengers. Seamless connectivity amid urban challenges The newly inaugurated section connects key commercial hubs such as BKC and Worli with cultural landmarks including Siddhivinayak Temple, Mahim Dargah, Mahim Church, Shivaji Park, and several prominent theatres. The estimated travel time across the stretch is 15 minutes. The construction faced multiple hurdles, including complex tunnelling under rocky terrain, coastal regulation clearances, traffic management in dense urban areas, land acquisition, and permissions for mangrove and tree felling. Officials stated that despite these constraints, the corridor promises to alleviate congestion along the Western Express Highway and suburban railway lines, while enhancing multimodal connectivity in Mumbai.
