Mumford & Sons Reach A New Career Low With New Album 'Rushmere'

Mumford & Sons' Rushmere starts strong with five top 10 Billboard debuts, though it misses the ... More Billboard 200 top 10 for the first time in the band's career. PARIS, FRANCE - JANUARY 16: Ben Lovett, Marcus Mumford and Ted Dwane of the Mumford and Sons group attend the Louis Vuitton Menswear Fall/Winter 2024-2025 show as part of Paris Fashion Week on January 16, 2024 in Paris, France. (Photo byfor Louis Vuitton) Mumford & Sons is back, and for fans of the Grammy-winning folk-rockers, that's reason enough to celebrate. The band returns this week with a brand new full-length, Rushmere, and it doesn't just show up on the Billboard charts, it breaks in with a strong, multi-ranking debut. The album starts inside the top 10 on most of the lists it reaches, which a clear signal that listeners were eager to hear what the group had been working on – and especially to buy the title. But sadly, not everything went according to plan. One particularly important tally tells a slightly less triumphant story, and unfortunately, it marks a new low in the band's otherwise impressive history. Rushmere opens on half a dozen Billboard rankings, and on five of them, it lands inside the top 10. The new full-length narrowly misses the upper tier on the all-important Billboard 200, which ranks the most-consumed albums and EPs in the U.S. across all genres. On that list, Mumford & Sons starts at No. 19. That's still a respectable showing, but for a group that's used to starting in much loftier positions, it's a bit of a stumble. For most rock outfits, a No. 19 debut on the Billboard 200 would be a major win. But when it comes to Mumford & Sons, expectations are a little higher. Rushmere, the band's fifth proper studio album, is its first to miss the top 10 on the ranking. The outfit launched its career more than a decade ago with Sigh No More, which peaked at No. 2 and introduced the world to its signature blend of folk and rock. From there, the next three releases — Babel, Wilder Mind, and Delta — all went straight to No. 1. Until now, the band hadn't known anything but the top two on the competitive roster. According to Luminate, Rushmere moved 27,600 equivalent units in its first frame. Of those nearly 28,000 units, 20,500 come from pure album sales, making the release one of the top-performing new projects in terms of purchases. On the Top Album Sales chart, Rushmere starts at No. 3, just missing out on a runner-up spot. While Rushmere doesn't quite crack the top 10 on the Billboard 200, it has no trouble reaching lofty heights elsewhere. The album enters at No. 2 on the Top Rock Albums ranking, missing the summit by just one space. It also arrives at No. 3 on four additional rosters: the Top Album Sales, Vinyl Albums, Top Rock & Alternative Albums, and Top Alternative Albums charts. Mumford & Sons has appeared in the top 10 on each of those rankings before. The group has now accrued at least half a dozen wins inside that space on all of those tallies.

Mumford & Sons Return To No. 1 After Almost A Decade Away

It's been years since Mumford & Sons last ruled the charts in the band's home country. The British folk-rock outfit became a household name more than a decade ago with a series of massive hits and bestselling albums, but after a long break between projects, some fans may have wondered whether the group would every return. Now. that comeback has finally transpired, and it's a big one. Mumford & Sons are back on top in the United Kingdom, and it's as if the rockers never left. The group's new full-length Rushmere is a surefire, immediate winner, and it earns the troupe another champion as it arrives. The band's latest effort debuts on six different rankings in the U.K. this frame. Rushmere enters the top two on all but one of those tallies. That near-perfect sweep shows that even though it's been more than half a decade since the group last delivered a full-length, there's still a loyal fan base there to support the rock musicians. At the top of the list is the most important list of them all: the Official Albums chart. Rushmere opens at No. 1, becoming Mumford & Sons' third chart-topping project in the U.K. and its first in nearly a decade. The band last led the ranking in May 2015 with Wilder Mind, which followed 2012's Babel, the group's first leader. The group's debut effort Sigh No More and previous release Delta both stalled at No. 2 on the tally. In addition to ruling the Official Albums chart, Rushmere also conquers both the Official Albums Sales tally and the Official Physical Albums ranking this week. That performance shows that many fans opted to buy a copy of the just-released effort, whether digitally or via a physical format. The title also launches at No. 2 on both the Official Album Downloads chart and the Official Vinyl Albums chart, falling just shy of a full takeover across all of the country's sales-based tallies. The one area where Rushmere disappoints somewhat is on streaming sites. The project only manages to debut at No. 42 on the Official Albums Streaming chart. The fact that it doesn't even crack the top 40 is surprising, given its success elsewhere. Just one tune from the new album finds space on the U.K. songs rankings this week. 'Rushmere,' the title track, launches at No. 83 on the Official Singles chart. It becomes the band's sixteenth placement on the country's main ranking of the most popular tunes. 'Rushmere' also appears on the Official Singles Downloads chart, opening at No. 60. While not really a major hit, the track is notable, as it becomes the band's first appearance on the singles tally in seven years. The last time Mumford & Sons charted a song in the U.K. was back in November 2018, when three tracks from Delta debuted and quickly disappeared.

'The Ballad of Wallis Island': Tom Basden on the initial nerves around Marcus Mumford listening to his music

Something many people fantasize about is what they would do if they won the lottery, and in The Ballad of Wallis Island (now in theatres), an eccentric man who lives on a remote island has to make that choice. The lottery winner Charles, played by Tim Key, decides to use his money to book his favourite musical duo, called Mortimer-McGwyer (played by Carey Mulligan and Tom Basden), which he used to enjoy with his late wife, for a private concert. But while Herb McGwyer and Nell Mortimer lost contact after they broke off their romantic relationship, Charles' dream seems like their nightmare. It's a brilliantly witty and charming film, directed by James Griffiths, written by Key and Basden. While the story began as a 2007 short film the trio worked on together, called The One and Only Herb McGwyer Plays Wallis Island, a core part of extending that story to a feature was adding characters into the story. Primarily Nell, who arrives with her husband Michael (Akemnji Ndifornyen), and a woman named Amanda (Sian Clifford), who works at the one local shop. "I think the unlocking character was definitely Nell, ... so that gave her a past, and then it gave a lot of emotional weight compared to the short film," Key told Yahoo Canada. "And then we wanted to bring her in with a husband, so AK came in for that, who's fantastic, and then a shopkeeper, the sort of sleeper hit of the movie." "The shop was just such a perfect little location," Basden added. "It was so brilliantly designed because ... it's a cottage that was then just reconfigured to be Amanda's shop, and also where she lives upstairs, and it's just such a fun place to spend time in, because it feels so real. All of the scenes in the shop were enormous fun." But a core part of the story also required Basden to not only craft music that worked for the story, but it had to be music that would be believable as something Charles would be so passionate about that he would want this private show to happen. "What was in my mind when writing a lot of the songs was thinking about the kind of music that would have meant a lot to Charles when he was younger, and particularly would have meant a lot to him and his wife," Basden explained. "But equally, what would have meant a lot to Herb." "I wanted the music to have a sort of innocence to it, to sort of hold its own musically, but to have a kind of romanticism through it and an optimism about it. Because I think that's the thing that feels most out of reach for Herb now. When we first meet him, he's pragmatic now, he's not optimistic anymore, and so being forced to play those old songs is something that he's a little bit scared of at first, ... because he feels so distant from them, and when he starts to reconnect with them, that's the thing that kind of brings back all of those emotions and gives him a bit of positivity again." Of course, Basden also gave himself some added pressure by sending his songs to Mulligan, whose husband is Mumford & Sons' Marcus Mumford. "It was horrendous," Basden admitted. "This guy had a terrible couple of months," Key added. "When you send that text message and then you're just waiting for four days." But Basden stressed that Mumford was "so supportive" the whole time. Another particularly impactful element of The Ballad of Wallis Island is Griffiths' use of the landscape. It was shot in just 18 days in and around Carmarthenshire, Wales. Through his effective perspective as the director, the setting really amplifies the story, while it could have easily been a distraction from the intimacy of the narrative. "The way I kind of approach everything, I think, with certainly my process, is to just look at it, scene by scene a little bit, and also think about the world that you're creating," Griffiths explained. "I kind of knew from the story that we needed the island to feel like a slightly timeless space that the characters could arrive there, and it would have a sort of transformative effect on them." "You're just looking at making the landscape feel [like] somewhere that would be difficult to get to, that would be difficult to get away from, but also held its own sort of poetry or beauty in itself. ... So we've been very clever about what we showed of the island and the coastline to construct it in people's minds. We drew a kind of virtual map, like a Lord of the Rings kind of map of the island, so we could track where people would journey to and from. And then photographically, for me, just using the camera to celebrate what Tom and Tim do and what the story was doing, which means that you're kind of trying to put them in the same frame a lot of the time, so that you can really get a sense of ... the comedic timing." The Ballad of Wallis Island is a beautiful story about love, kindness and nostalgia, with a melancholy tone that still ends with joy, and injected with the perfect amount of comedy.

Jimmy Fallon delivers comically long intro for Mumford & Sons after being roasted by band's frontman

Marcus Mumford, lead singer of the band Mumford & Sons, would like a little more respect from late night host Jimmy Fallon. Mumford appeared on Tuesday's episode of 'The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon' and, before Mumford & Sons performed, he playfully complained about how basic Fallon's introduction of them was during the 'SNL' 50th anniversary 'Homecoming Concert' in February. The singer said that he and the band have known Fallon for 'a very long time' and that they expected him to introduce them saying something 'really sweet,' or talk about some of their accomplishments as a group or with regard to their involvement with 'SNL.' Instead, much to Mumford's chagrin, Fallon's introduction at the time was exceedingly brief: 'Ladies and gentleman, Mumford & Sons.' On his show this week, Fallon claimed that he did originally have a heartfelt speech prepared for Mumford & Sons' introduction and 'SNL' creator Lorne Micheals nixed it, but Mumford wasn't buying it. 'You totally did them for other artists,' He said, laughing. 'You were wanging on about (Lady) Gaga!' Later on in the show this week, Fallon got a redo when he made an epic three-and-a-half minute speech before the band's performance. Fallon dove into Mumford & Sons' history as a band, dating back to their first Grammy wins and their first appearance at the Glastonbury Festival. He also spoke about all three members of the band, including Mumford, Ted Duane and Ben Lovett, even going into detail about their respective personal hobbies beyond music. 'As we all know, he's a total foodie,' Fallon said of Lovett. He then went on about the band's lyrical content having strong 'literary influences' and, of course, about their wardrobe, describing their style as a 'classic, slightly rugged, timeless esthetic, often featuring earthy tones, natural fabrics and a mix of traditional and modern elements.' The band were seen laughing several times while on stage waiting for Fallon to finish his lengthy introduction.
