Rookie WR Konata Mumpfield might be the Rams' next draft gem
Mumpfield is impressing people in camp, including Davante Adams and Mike LaFleur It was getting late in the draft when the Los Angeles Rams went on the clock for the last time at No. 242 overall. They hadn't yet grabbed a wide receiver and all of the top names were already off the board. But just before they went on the clock, they began looking at some of the available wideouts and Konata Mumpfield's name was there. Sean McVay and Les Snead flipped on Mumpfield's college tape from the University of Pittsburgh and didn't hesitate to put his name on the card. In that episode of 'Behind the Grind', we got to see McVay's reaction to watching Mumpfield, whom he may not have studied closely. He was genuinely impressed, saying unequivocally that he was the best receiver available. 'He's the best receiver. That's not close,' McVay said. 'He makes some impressive adjustments too, now. Can change his route tempo. This is impressive. I like the way he's wired, for sure. Mumpfield seems like a good pick in the seventh.' That was back in April and ever since the Rams drafted him, Mumpfield has steadily improved. He's been flashing in training camp, even getting opportunities with the first-team offense. That's no small feat, especially on a team with Puka Nacua, Davante Adams, Tutu Atwell and Jordan Whittington. Mumpfield's play has been so impressive that Adams raved about him in a recent press conference. It makes Adams feel like a 'proud dad' watching him make plays and 'kill some of (the Rams') better corners' in practice. "I've seen stuff from even Konata since he's been out here that's opened my eyes, not necessarily like, 'Oh my God, I've never seen that', but it's him changing up his pace and working through some things, seeing some of the errors and the trial and error I guess I could say," Adams said. "Even over the course of three practice days, how he can transform and go and kill some of our better corners on some amazing routes. It's fun for me just watching the growth of him, talking through it, seeing somebody fail, doing something a certain way and then going out there and knocking it out of the park. I feel like a proud dad watching him out there.' That was on Saturday before the pads even came on in practice. Following Wednesday's walk-through, offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur had similarly glowing things to say about the rookie receiver. Mumpfield's maturity, knowledge and attention to detail have caught the attention of LaFleur. 'He just understands football,' LaFleur said Wednesday. 'He understands stems. He understands angles. He has a great feel for space and a knack for space. His route tempo changes. He's catching the ball great. He's fearless in terms of going over the middle and stuff like that. Obviously, that'll have to come to fruition when we get into real games when safeties and linebackers can actually light you up and stuff like that. I think from his college film and what I've seen from his demeanor, I don't think that's going to be a problem. Most importantly, he's just fitting in with guys. He's a very mature rookie. I am really excited about Mump.' It sounds similar to when Nacua came into the league and had an immediate impact as the Rams' top receiver in 2023. He was a smart and physical rookie who played without fear – and still does in Year 3. And like Nacua, Mumpfield didn't wow anyone with his pre-draft testing. At 5-foot-11 and 186 pounds, Mumpfield only ran a 4.59 in the 40-yard dash, which was the fourth-slowest time of any wide receiver in attendance. Like Nacua and Cooper Kupp before him, Mumpfield doesn't win with speed. He's a crafty route-runner and smart player who pays attention to the little things, similar to the way Adams does with his routes. Those traits made Kupp and Nacua draft gems for the Rams, and Mumpfield might just be next in line as the Rams' latest find.

Rams training camp preview: How many roster spots are available for WRs in 2025?
Can Jordan Whittington, Konata Mumpfield and other WRs make some noise in camp? The Los Angeles Rams' receiving corps looks like one of the best on paper entering 2025. Puka Nacua is back as a top playmaker, while Davante Adams joins the roster as a free agent – and a big one, at that. Tutu Atwell returned on a $10 million deal and Jordan Whittington is entering Year 2 after showing promise as a rookie, giving the Rams great depth at the position. That should make for some exciting and intriguing camp battles this summer as players not only jockey for a roster spot, but also for positioning on the depth chart. Here's a look at the receiver group heading into training camp. Roster locks Nacua, Adams and Atwell are all obviously going to make the team, being the top three receivers on the team. Nacua and Adams are 1a and 1b, while Atwell's $10 million fully guaranteed contract make him a lock. Whittington may not seem like a lock as a former sixth-round pick but there's no chance the Rams are going to let him go. He offers too much value as a WR4 and return specialist, as evidenced last season when he filled in admirably when the Rams were banged up. Likely to make it Mumpfield was drafted by the Rams in the seventh round this year but that doesn't guarantee him a roster spot whatsoever. Teams cut seventh-round rookies all the time, so Mumpfield will have to earn his place on the team. The Rams really liked him as a late-round prospect so he does have the benefit over the undrafted rookies, but he has work to do in order to carve out a role for himself. On the bubble Based on these projections, the Rams have five wideouts who are likely to make the team. They'll probably keep six or more wideouts when they trim their roster to 53 players, which means there might only be one player from this group who sticks around into September. Smith and Covey both have an advantage thanks to their special teams ability as returners, but will the Rams really keep both of them? Probably not. Edwards, Williams and Presley are undrafted rookies who have encouraging skill sets, and Stoops is facing a two-game suspension for PEDs, so that puts him behind the eight ball. Position battle to watch Whittington is a really exciting young player who plays similarly to Nacua in the fact that they're both physical and aggressive, putting their bodies on the line every play. Mumpfield has far more to prove as a late-round rookie but his route running is great and he's just a well-rounded receiver who does a lot of things well without being outstanding in one area. It's possible Atwell, Whittington and Mumpfield will all rotate on offense, but the most important position battle is the one between Whittington and Mumpfield. Potential sleeper Williams is an undrafted rookie who stands at 5-foot-9, but he's lightning quick and like Covey and Smith, he can be a return specialist for the Rams. He's still a long shot to make the team, given the depth Los Angeles has atop the depth chart, but he's someone who shouldn't be ruled out. Pitt Panthers Wideout Konata Mumpfield Selected In Seventh Round Of NFL Draft
Wide receiver Konata Mumpfield was the third of three Pittsburgh Panthers players selected in the 2025 NFL Draft. The Los Angeles Rams picked Mumpfield with the 26th selection of the 7th Round, the final round of the draft's final day. He was pick number 242 overall. Mumpfield was the third among Panthers teammates OT Branson Taylor and TE Gavin Bartholomew to be drafted. Advertisement Here is part of Mumpfield's draft profile from Athlon Sports: After transferring from Akron in 2022, Mumpfield led Pitt in receptions in two of the last three seasons. In those three years, he had 154 catches for 1,940 yards and 11 touchdowns. His 52 receptions for 813 yards yards last season led the Panthers in both categories. At 5'11'' and 186-Lbs. with just average speed, Mumpfield doesn't have measurables that jump off the charts. However, he's a good route runner with reliable hands that has the short-area quickness to get separation. He adjusts extremely well to off-target throws and has outstanding mid-air body control. After the catch, Mumpfield is very elusive in the open field to pick up extra yardage. He'll need to expand his route tree with improved precision but can be a viable threat as a short and intermediate receiver with deep ball capabilities. Konata Mumpfield is the second Pitt wideout to be drafted in the last two years. He follows Bub Means, who was a fifth-round choice by the New Orleans Saints last season. Advertisement Mumpfield will have the chance to carve out a role in a Rams offense that attacks defenses with route combinations that fit well with Mumpfield's best attributes. Rams rookie WR Konata Mumpfield learned how to run routes from watching Davante Adams tape
Rams rookie WR Konata Mumpfield learned how to run routes from watching Davante Adams tape New Rams wide receiver Konata Mumpfield is a big fan of watching game tape. The 2025 seventh-rounder out of Pittsburgh is known as a route technician and told LaQuan Jones of The Sick Podcast that he learned how to run routes by watching the Los Angeles Rams' current and former stars. Mumpfield said he grew up watching Davante Adams as well as Cooper Kupp. If there were any two receivers Sean McVay would want a young player to emulate, it's those two. And now, Mumpfield will get to learn from Adams himself and Kupp's apprentice, Puka Nacua. Despite is late round, Mumpfield was highly consistent during his collegiate career. He recorded at least 40 receptions for 500 yards in all four of his years in college (two at Akron and two at Pittsburgh) with at least five touchdowns in three of the four years. Mumpfield finished with 217 total receptions for 2,691 yards and 19 touchdowns. He doesn't figure to play an important role on the offense right now with at least four receivers ahead of him on the depth chart, but the Rams seem to have seen enough from Mumpfield to take him with their last 2025 draft pick. Now, it's up to him to make a name for himself this offseason ahead of the regular season.
