Families roll beedis, cook food while protesting for homes
Mangaluru: With the indefinite dharna launched by the families of Kuppepadavu village in the Mangaluru North constituency, seeking sites and homes, entering its 11th day on Monday, women participating in the protest turned the protest venue into their workplace to roll beedis. Muneer Katipalla, district secretary of CPM, Dakshina Kannada, said that there are hundreds of poor families without their own homes or land who have been waiting for decades, having applied to the panchayat for plots. Six years ago, in a rush before the elections, families were allocated plots and distributed title deeds to 97 families. However, even after six years of receiving the title deeds, the plots were not handed over to the families, he said. Frustrated poor families formed a protest committee under the guidance of local labour organisations and CPM members and started an indefinite protest in front of the Kuppepadavu gram panchayat. Despite holding several sit-ins and protests since Jan, justice was not served. Hence, they organised an indefinite protest, but even after 11 days, the authorities concerned have not responded to their demand, said Muneer. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo "If the youth of coastal districts are engaged in heated debates over communal issues, women labourers have been on a sit-in protest for the past 11 days, demanding the distribution of approved house sites. They are fighting together without any religious bias or Hindu-Muslim conflict. The Hindu and Muslim women are rolling beedis as part of their livelihood together at the protest site. They cook and eat rice gruel from the same pot. This is truly a beautiful scene, teaching a life lesson to the people of the coastal region," he said, urging the local elected representatives to fulfil the demands of families in the village.

"They Got Scared...": Malayalam Actor Minu Muneer As Sex Abuse Survivors Backtrack
Quick Read Summary is AI generated, newsroom reviewed. All 35 sexual harassment complaints against Malayalam film personalities will be closed, as survivors refuse to testify. Minu Muneer, a key accuser, cites intimidation and false charges against her as reasons for the silence. New Delhi: All 35 complaints accusing prominent Malayalam film personalities of misogyny and sexual harassment will be closed, i.e., a special police team will not pursue possible convictions in even one instance, sources within the investigating team told NDTV this week. Sources said the investigating team had been left with 'no option' but to file FADs, or 'further action dropped', reports because all the survivors had refused to record statements, while those who had already testified did not want to pursue further legal action or give any more details. All these complaints were filed after last year's Justice K Hema Committee report flagged an alarming number of sexual assault allegations. The committee was appointed in 2017 and submitted its report in 2019, but it was only in 2024 that a redacted version was made public. And it was only after the report was released - generating widespread outrage - that the Kerala government formed the SIT, or special investigation team, to inquire into the complaints. Among the complaints was actor Minu Muneer, who spoke extensively with NDTV last year and offered details of allegations against popular actors like M Mukesh, Jayasurya, Maniyanpilla Raju, and Idavela Babu; she accused them of harassment while movies were being filmed. She also told NDTV she had received death threats after going public with her complaints. Ms Muneer spoke again with NDTV Wednesday morning and said the reason, she believed, why many survivors had gone silent, was the false POCSO, or child sex abuse, charges against her. "When I first disclosed these complaints, you know, I had to face a lot of challenges. The number one is this false POCSO case... when police charged me without proper investigation, then all the victims got scared. Even I had a lot of friends come forward... they also got scared." "... this morphed video, false POCSO case emerged only after I disclosed the truth against prominent people, especially film director Balachandran Menon," Ms Muneer told NDTV. " First I disclosed about Mukesh, then Babu... there was no problem for two weeks. Then, when I disclosed about prominent actor and director Balachandran Menon, I got death threats." Ms Muneer was referring to allegations in September last year by a young girl - that the actress made "sex slaves" of herself and others. The girl, local media had said, is her minor cousin. Ms Muneer said then that the allegations were part of a political plot to stop her and others from coming forward with damaging stories about powerful men in the Malayalam film industry. "So, after all this (the allegedly false POCSO case against her) how will other survivors come forward? What challenges will they face... because now I am facing challenges for the last nine months... and Balachandran Menon also filed a false complaint about my Facebook post." The false complaint allegation dated back to Ms Muneer's original social media post, against which Mr Menon had filed defamatory charges, under sections of the IT Act. "I posted the post... it is the truth. But he complained that I had insulted him. But how it is insult? I wrote about what I had gone through in the Malayalam film industry." "So, when I am facing these problems and all other survivors are watching... then how will they come forward?" she asked, pointing out also she had been denied anticipatory bail over the Facebook post complaint because of allegedly false POCSO charges. "What mistake did I do? Only disclosing the truth... only posting factual content..." Ms Muneer also indicated the police team investigating these and other complaints had, in fact, worked hard and were receptive to the women's concerns, and that she had cooperated fully. The actors against whom Ms Muneer had filed allegations had said they welcomed a full investigation into the charges, and one of them, Mukesh, claimed Minu Muneer (and her associates) had sought financial assistance from him and then tried to blackmail him. All of these allegations, Ms Muneer's and others', resulted in a shake-up of the film industry's top decision-making body, AMMA, or Association of Malayalam Movie Actors. The main panel dissolved itself "in light of allegations made by some actors against some of the committee".

Allocate more funds for education of children from Koraga community, says activist
Mangaluru: Social activist and CPM district secretary Muneer Katipalla urged both central and state govts to invest substantially in the education of children from the Koraga community. He spoke at the inauguration of a personality development and scholarship distribution programme for Koraga community students, organised by the Shri Koragajja Seva Trust in Vamanjoor. "The indigenous Koraga community, inheritors of all modern knowledge traditions, is a tribal community on the brink of extinction due to exploitation from the hierarchical caste system. In the current era of globalisation, liberalisation, and privatisation, formal education is essential to secure even minimal opportunities," said Muneer. Further, he emphasised the need to allocate at least 10% of the annual income from the numerous Koragajja shrines in both districts to the education of Koraga community children. Krishnappa Konchadi, the state co-director of the Karnataka Adivasi Rights Coordination Committee, said that education is the first step towards the liberation of the indigenous Koraga community of coastal Karnataka, who were victims of centuries of injustice, exploitation, oppression, and caste untouchability. He stressed that both the govt and society must work with a spirit of dedication towards this cause. Shri Koragajja Seva Trust distributed student scholarship funds to 100 students pursuing education in extreme poverty.

Furious RyanAir flyer abandons trip after racking up ‘ridiculous' hidden fees: ‘I'm not getting my money's worth'
She wasn't going to submit to this fly-way robbery. An incensed Ryanair passenger was so steamed over the budget carrier's nearly $75 check-in fee that she canceled her entire vacation — and went out to dinner instead. 'What they were charging was really unfair for the job that they had to do,' Hina Muneer, 29, griped to Kennedy News Service. Advertisement The fiasco occurred on May 13 after the traveler arrived at London's Stansted Airport in preparation to depart for a five-day solo jaunt to Lithuania. The pharmacist had reportedly planned the getaway to reward herself for passing a difficult medical class. 4 'I went up to her and said 'Are you serious, £55?' I said I'm not going to pay that, and she said 'okay, fine,'' Muneer recalled. Kennedy News/@hina_st 'It was my first trip in eight months, I just finished my prescribing course and I was going to treat myself, I thought why not,' Muneer declared. Advertisement Unfortunately, the traveler forgot to check in online because her reminder email had gone to her spam folder, but she thought she'd be fine doing so in person. But when the Berkshire resident went to check in an hour before departure, the Ryanair clerk informed her that she'd have to pay £55 ($74.23) per their policy. 4 Muneer went to eat Nepalese steamed dumplings instead. Kennedy News/@hina_st The traveler was under the assumption that check-in was free, even though the carrier has had the rule in place for several years and lists the charge on its website. Advertisement Either way, Muneer found the penalty absolutely 'ridiculous.' 'I can have a health assessment for £55 from someone with a degree, not for someone to put my passport details in,' the pill hawker declared. She noted that the fee was nearly 'as expensive' as the flight itself, which cost around $90. 4 Muneer said Ryanair sent her 'an email to check in but it went to my junk and I genuinely forgot to check in.' AFP via Getty Images Muneer ultimately decided to scrap the trip as she felt the charges didn't correspond to the service provided. Advertisement 'I went up to her and said 'Are you serious, £55?' I said I'm not going to pay that, and she said 'okay, fine,'' the incensed traveler recalled. 'I know what you're doing, checking my passport, putting in my passport number and a few details and that is it. The charge in relation to what you're doing is ridiculous.' 'Everything I had booked was refundable anyways, so in this situation I'd rather not,' reasoned Muneer. After leaving the airport, Muneer decided to treat herself to steamed dumplings at a Nepalese restaurant near her house, declaring, 'My money is better spent getting food.' 4 Muneer has vowed to never fly Ryanair again. Kennedy News/@hina_st In light of her experience, the traveler is warning people not to fly Ryanair because its cheap fares aren't worth the terrible customer service and surprise fees. 'People jump on the bandwagon of getting cheap flights and don't realize there's all these hidden charges,' she said. 'There's also the inflexibility of customer service that makes me think I'm not getting my money's worth. It was the right decision, I'd rather do that than take a flight with them, which I won't be doing in future.' Ryanair reps have since addressed the incident in a statement.' Advertisement 'In accordance with Ryanair's T&Cs (terms and conditions), which this passenger agreed to at the time of booking, this passenger failed to check-in online before arriving at London Stansted Airport (13 May),' a spokesperson claimed. 'Therefore, this passenger was correctly asked to pay the standard airport check-in fee when checking in at the airport.' They added, 'All passengers traveling with Ryanair agree to check in online before arriving at their departure airport and all passengers are sent an email reminding them to do so 24 hrs before departure. Meanwhile, the budget carrier warns flyers on its site that 'if you do not check in online up to 2 hours before your scheduled departure time, you may check in at the airport up to 40 minutes before departure, but you will be charged an airport check-in fee.' 'We urge all passengers to check in online before arriving at the airport so these fees can be avoided,' added the website. Advertisement This wouldn't be the first time that a flyer took issue with the airline's fees. In February, a Ryanair passenger claimed she was charged about $63 to bring her water bottle on board her flight.
