Pregnant Women Face Daily Life-Threatening Risks in Gaza
DaysofPal- Pregnant women and their unborn children in Gaza are living under severe, life-threatening conditions due to malnutrition, lack of medical care, and the ongoing Israeli blockade and genocide, according to Munir Al-Borsh, Director General of the Ministry of Health in Gaza.
Al-Borsh explained that more than 55,000 pregnant women in Gaza are suffering from acute deficiencies in essential nutrients such as iron, calcium, and folic acid.
The lack of a balanced diet has caused widespread severe anemia among expectant mothers, leaving them physically weakened and highly vulnerable to dangerous bleeding during childbirth.
He also warned that folic acid deficiencies put fetuses at serious risk of congenital malformations, particularly in the nervous system.
'The fetuses in Gaza are being born into empty wombs, trapped by hunger, anxiety, and a lack of proper care,' Al-Borsh said.
Moreover, he emphasized that the war has not only destroyed hospitals and medical facilities but has also forced pregnant women into shelters, camps, and inadequate homes where they cannot receive proper prenatal care.
Since March 2, 2025, the Israeli occupation forces have closed all crossings into Gaza, preventing the entry of humanitarian aid, whereas aid trucks remain stuck at the borders, and the small amounts allowed in fail to meet even the most basic needs of the population.
Since October 7, 2023, Israeli military actions in Gaza, backed by the United States, have resulted in a humanitarian catastrophe, including more than 61,599 Palestinian deaths, 154,088 injuries, over 9,000 missing persons, hundreds of thousands of displaced people, and widespread famine.
Furthermore, the Israeli-made famine alone has killed 227 people, including 103 children.
Al-Borsh stressed the urgent need for unrestricted humanitarian aid access and proper protection of civilians, especially pregnant women and children, highlighting the compounded risks they face amid hunger, displacement, and ongoing military attacks.
