A 42-year-old Michigan man accused of carrying out a knife attack at a Traverse City Walmart has been charged. Bradford James Gille, of Afton, Michigan, was charged with one count of terrorism and 11 counts of assault with intent to murder. Gille is accused of using a folding knife with a 3.5-inch blade to attack five men and six women, including one store employee, late Saturday afternoon. The victims' ages range from 21 to 84 years old. On Sunday, Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael Shea said law enforcement was notified of the attack around 4:43 p.m. Saturday, and sheriff's deputies arrived at the store around two minutes later. "At the time of the deputy's arrival, multiple citizens, including one who was armed with a pistol, were confronting the male suspect in the parking lot and preventing him from harming further people and leaving," Shea said. "The deputy took the suspect into custody without further incident." Authorities are still working to determine the motive behind the stabbing attack. "As far as a motive, that's yet to be determined," Shea said. "Our detectives, with assistance from the FBI, interviewed him at length, and that will be part of the investigation as it moves forward." The victims are being treated at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. The conditions of those stabbed are improving, according to Munson Healthcare officials, and Dr. Tom Schirmerhorn, chief medical officer of Munson Medical Center, said all victims are expected to survive. As of Monday afternoon, one patient remains in serious condition, five are in fair condition, two are in good condition, two others have been treated and transferred and one patient has been treated and released. 11 injured in ‘random' Walmart stabbing attack, sheriff says
Law enforcement officers have detained a man suspected of stabbing 11 people inside a Walmart in Traverse City, Michigan, in what they said appeared to be a 'random' act of violence. According to local health officials, six of the victims were in 'critical condition' Saturday night. The suspect — a 42-year-old man who was not previously known to police and is believed to be a Michigan resident — is in custody, Grand Traverse Sheriff Michael D. Shea told a news conference Saturday. His office said the suspect, whom they did not identify by name, entered the Walmart in Garfield Township at 4:43 p.m. and 'used a folding knife to stab eleven people of unknown ages.' The office said authorities believe the suspect acted alone. According to the sheriff's office, a deputy arrived at the scene within minutes and took the man into custody, assisted by Walmart customers, who also helped treat victims. The sheriff's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment early Sunday. In a statement Saturday evening, Munson Medical Center in Traverse City said it was treating 11 stabbing victims — six in critical condition and five in serious condition. 'Munson Healthcare leadership wishes to thank our amazing staff, which responded commendably and admirably under these tragic circumstances,' the facility said. Shea, the sheriff, said the incident started near the checkout counter but declined to give further details. He said investigators were looking into reports of 'citizen involvement' in the response to the stabbing and said 11 victims is 'too many, but thank God it wasn't more.' Authorities did not immediately offer any information about a potential motive. Shea said the preliminary investigation suggested that the stabbings were 'random acts' and the victims 'not predetermined.' Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) said on X that she was in contact with law enforcement about the 'horrible news out of Traverse City.' 'Our thoughts are with the victims and the community reeling from this brutal act of violence. I am grateful to the first responders for their swift response to apprehend the suspect,' she added. At the news conference Saturday, Shea said this type of stabbing is 'very uncommon' in the city of just under 16,000 people on the shores of Lake Michigan. But he said 'no area is immune to this type of activity' and told the public to 'be vigilant.'
