Ashanti Blasted By Chris Gotti For Denying Relationship With Irv Gotti: 'I Was Their Therapist'
Chris Gotti, elder brother of the late music mogul Irv Gotti, recently addressed comments made by Ashanti regarding her relationship with Irv during her time at Murder Inc. Records. He called her recollection 'disrespectful' and dismissive of the deep personal and professional history they shared. Speaking candidly on the Let's Keep it 100 podcast, Chris expressed frustration over Ashanti's portrayal of her past with Irv, particularly her assertion that their involvement never amounted to a real relationship. 'She says they wasn't in a relationship. They was in a relationship,' Chris stated. He went on to describe himself as a frequent mediator during their private conflicts, saying, 'I was they therapist. Like come on now, don't do that. But at the end of the day that's what makes what went on with them so real.' Chris also took issue with Ashanti's downplaying of Irv Gotti and Murder Inc.'s contributions to her success, suggesting her rise in the music industry wouldn't have happened the same way without Irv's influence. 'For her to act like it ain't Murder Inc. that made her is f**king bullsh*t or Irv made her. She had three deals before him. Like, something with y'all chemistry worked out! Respect it! That's all. Not saying you have to talk about the ni**a, but respect the magic that was made. That's all I said.' 'I'm not gonna let no one talk about my brother, [we're] gonna have a problem, simple and plain. Especially someone who he made their career. Like, I was there. He made you sing records the way you sang them cause you would've never sang it that way if it was up to you,' he continued. Chris's comments were made in response to remarks Ashanti gave during her 2022 appearance on Angie Martinez's IRL podcast, in which she addressed Irv Gotti's earlier statements on Drink Champs. 'Let's clear this up,' Ashanti said. 'We're not gonna say relationship. We dealt with each other, but was Irv my boyfriend? Was I his girlfriend? Never… Irv had several girlfriends, so I'm a little confused by the label and the description.' She continued, 'I think that Irv definitely has his side and his version… you may think that it's something and the other person knows that it's not… Irv has flat-out lied about a lot of things.' Ashanti added that manipulation played a role in their dynamic, sharing, 'He would say stuff like, 'No one wants to record with you, nobody f**ks with you like that.'' Despite their complicated history, Ashanti insisted she had no interest in exposing Irv's secrets, stating, 'I'm happy, I'm in a different space… I don't play in the mud.' The heated back-and-forth between the two camps has simmered in the wake of Gotti's death, with Ashanti paying tribute to the Queens, N.Y., native in a public statement on social media. Ashanti and Irv Gotti were at the heart of Murder Inc.'s meteoric rise in the early 2000s, creating hits like 'Foolish' and 'Happy' — tracks that dominated the charts and cemented the label's place in Hip-Hop and R&B history. Tragically, Irv Gotti passed away in February 2025 after reportedly suffering from a 'major hemorrhagic stroke' stemming from his longstanding bout with diabetes. Gotti was 54 at the time of his death. Irv Gotti's Brother Says Ashanti Should Be More Grateful To The Late Mogul, Social Media Offers Up Harsh Receipts
Source: Johnny Nunez / Getty Irving Lorenzo, aka Irv Gotti, the head of the hitmaking hip-hop label Murder Inc., passed away in February at the age of 57 from complications of diabetes. The music mogul helped make acts like Ja Rule and Ashanti stars of the '90s with hits like 'Always on Time' and 'Rain on Me,' respectively. However, Gotti's personal relationship with Ashanti ultimately soured the artist on him and the label. She's now married to Nelly and they have a son, Kareem Kinkade, who will be 2 in July. In 2022, Ashanti told Vulture that she and Irv never dated. 'Let's clear this up,' Ashanti said on Angie Martinez's IRL podcast back in October of that year. 'We dealt with each other, but was Irv my boyfriend? Was I his girlfriend? Never. Irv had several girlfriends, so I'm a little confused by the label and the description.' Ashanti also said that Irv was 'hurt' when she started dating Nelly and that she denies that they ever even had sex. She said that when Irv's feelings for her weren't reciprocated, he wouldn't allow her to record for his label, and that she believes he was behind death threats leveled at her and her staff. 'I genuinely, in my heart, believe that Irv wishes death on me. A million percent,' she told Martinez. It must have been a little challenging for Ashanti to acknowledge Irv after his passing, but she did so gracefully via her Instagram page. She posted a photo of the Murder Inc. roster with Irv, saying, 'I can't believe things ended like this….and it makes me so sad… She continued, 'We weren't on the best of terms the past few years, but as I've always said, through our ups and downs, I will forever be grateful for everything that you've done for me. We made history, and that will remain infinite.. I've always respected your musical genius and ability to push me to be my best.. All the greatness and positive things that came, far outweigh the dark and negative times. I have always prayed for you to find peace. Sending love and prayers to the entire family. Rest well. Rest in Peace Irv .' However, Chris doesn't seem to think Ashanti said enough. On the Keep it 100 podcast, he said he believes the two were in a romantic relationship and that Ashanti should give her former label head more respect. He did say he thinks that his brother was out of order when it came to Ashanti, but that the label Irv created was instrumental in her success. He says that Irv only talked about Ashanti because he was always asked about their relationship. 'She should understand that, too,' he said. 'If you're in the limelight, they ask the question. It wasn't little, it was big. For her to act like it ain't Murder Inc. that made her is f— bull—-. Or that Irv made her, it's crazy. She had three deals before him. Like, something with y'all chemistry worked out. Respect it. That's all. I'm not saying you have to talk about… Respect the magic that was made. That's all I said.' Chris Gotti Says Ashanti Should Give Irv Gotti More Credit For Her Success
Source: Chance Yeh / Getty Chris Gotti is a firm believer that blood is thicker than water. He says Ashanti should be giving his brother Irv Gotti more credit her success. As spotted on Hop New Hip Hop the music executive paid a visit to the Keep It 100 podcast recently and spoke on different topics relating to the Murder Inc. Records legacy, his late great brother and more. Prior to Irv Gotti's death his relationship with Ashanti had severely soured – to the point where she avoided talking about him altogether. When asked about it he made it clear that Ashanti shouldn't be surprised it was such a hot topic. 'Everyone keeps talking about it, she should understand that, too' he said. 'If you're in the limelight, they ask the question. It wasn't little, it was big. For her to act like it ain't Murder Inc. that made her is f***ing bulls**t. Or that Irv made her, it's crazy.' He went to remind everyone that she didn't find her signature sound until she got to Murder Inc. 'She had three deals before him. Like, something with y'all chemistry worked out. Respect it. That's all. I'm not saying you have to talk about. Respect the magic that was made. That's all I said' Chris Gotti added. He would go on to reveal that their tension put him in a tough spot. 'Irv hate when I take her position. But I never took Irv's position with her. But I'm doing it 'cause he ain't here now. I'm not going to let no one talk about my brother. You going to have a problem. Simple and plain. Especially someone who he made that career. I was there. Like, he made you sing records in the way you sang them. 'Cause you would've never sang it that way if it was up to you.' Prior to his passing Irv Gotti made some very startling revelations on two separate Drink Champs episodes about his personal dealings with the 'Foolish' singer. Irving alleged they were romantically involved all the while he was still legally married. He caught severe backlash with many saying Irv was fixated with Ashanti. 'We coming 4 you!' 'To die fo,' 'Murder Inc.,' 'Illuminati' and '777' were also spray-painted across the buildings — including three buildings just to the west of Ivana's former residence at 10 E. 64th St., plus two right across the street from it. It has remained vacant since 2022, and is currently on the market for $19.5 million, according to Street Easy. Cops said the graffiti appeared around 1:07 a.m. on Friday. Police are investigating the incident. They are not considering it a hate crime, police said.
