Former Bucs CB and Super Bowl champion set to miss all of 2025

Former Bucs CB and Super Bowl champion set to miss all of 2025 A former Bucs Super Bowl cornerback is now set to miss the 2025 season after suffering an injury away from the field. Cardinals cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting was placed on the reserve/non-football injury list last week. The injury and its severity were not and have not been reported at this time. ESPN's John Weinfuss reported the injury was known to the Cardinals before the NFL Draft, which affected their plans. As a result, they drafted both Will Johnson and Denzel Burke to add depth at the cornerback position to help cover his absence. Murphy-Bunting signed with the Cardinals after leaving the Bucs in 2024, signing a three-year, $25 million deal. Murphy-Bunting was drafted by the Bucs in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft with the 39th overall pick. While with the Bucs, he accumulated 188 total tackles, six tackles for a loss, six interceptions, with one being a pick-6. He also broke up 21 passes and played in 53 games for the team while being a member of their Super Bowl-winning team in 2020.

Arizona Cardinals HC Jonathan Gannon says he feels ‘really good about' cornerback room

Arizona Cardinals HC Jonathan Gannon says he feels 'really good about' cornerback room A look at who is in the room after Sean Murphy-Bunting was lost for the season and what Jonathan Gannon thinks of the group. The Arizona Cardinals' cornerback room received a jolt last week when Sean Murphy-Bunting was placed on the reserve/non-football injury list, making him ineligible to play for the entire 2025 season. The knee injury apparently occurred prior to the draft and contributed to the Cardinals selecting cornerbacks Will Johnson and Denzel Burke in the second and fifth round, respectively. Ahead of the first practice of OTAs Wednesday, head coach Jonathan Gannon revealed that Murphy-Bunting had surgery 'to get it fixed. So he won't be able to play this year. It's a tough break for him, a tough break for us, but we'll move forward and so will he.' Moving forward without Murphy-Bunting still leaves a crowded room that, in addition to Johnson and Burke, includes the following players: Garrett Williams (D2 2023), 16 games/11 starts in 2024 Star Thomas V (waiver claim 2023), 17 games/15 starts Max Melton, (D2 2024), 17 games/3 starts Elijah Jones (D3 2024), IR (ankle) entire season Kei'Trel Clark (D6 2023), 15 games/1 start Jaylon Jones (FA 2025) 8 games/1 start with Bears Jaden Davis (D7 2024), practice squad all season Ekow Boye-Doe (FA 2025), practice squad with Giants Asked whether he has a comfort level with several of the corners that now have game experience, Gannon said, 'You need reps to learn. But that's an ongoing process for all our guys, no matter if you play 18 years like Calais (Campbell); he'll learn from good and bad reps (same as) a rookie that's never played in the NFL before. 'Everyone's at different stages in their career, but feel really good about that room, feel good about the guys that are coming back and feel really good about the guys that we added.' Gannon has referred to Johnson as 'a perfect scheme fit,' and was asked what that means and whether Johnson's chances to play are enhanced by the loss of Murphy-Bunting. "Off the tape in college, he played in multiple systems and had to do different things. And we ask our corners to do a lot. They play a lot of different techniques and he can play them all. So that's what I really meant by scheme fit. 'But as far as where he fits in this, he's competing for his role right now, just like everybody.' Arizona Cardinals CB Sean Murphy-Bunting had offseason knee injury that needed surgery

Arizona Cardinals CB Sean Murphy-Bunting had offseason knee injury that needed surgery Murphy-Bunting will not play in 2025 after sustaining an offseason knee injury that required surgery. The Arizona Cardinals placed cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting on the non-football injury reserve last week, ending his season before it even started. We did not know what happened. We still do not know exactly what occurred, but head coach Jonathan Gannon gave some insight when he addressed the media on Wednesday before the beginning of voluntary OTAs. "(It) happened in the off season (and he) had to have surgery to get it fixed," Gannon told reporters, "So he won't be able to play this year. It's a tough break for him, a tough break for us, but we'll move forward and so will he." He did not elaborate further but did indicate it was a knee injury. Murphy-Bunting remains under contract, although the team is not obligated to pay him in 2025. It is uncertain yet whether they will honor the contract, pay him something less or not pay him at all. He is under contract through 2026. His spot on the offseason roster, as of Wednesday morning, had not been filled. Arizona Cardinals' offseason moves at CB make sense with Sean Murphy-Bunting on NFI

Arizona Cardinals' offseason moves at CB make sense with Sean Murphy-Bunting on NFI The Cardinals' interest in Asante Samuel and drafting two CBs now makes sense as Sean Murphy-Bunting's season is over. Thursday's NFL transaction report showed a surprise, as the Arizona Cardinals placed veteran cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting on the non-football injury reserve, a move that ends his 2025 season. They are not obligated to pay him the nearly $7.7 million in salary he was due this coming season. This move suddenly clears up some of the reports and moves they have made. They now make sense. Entering the offseason, cornerback did not seem to be a real need. Murphy-Bunting was returning with a fully guaranteed salary. Garrett Williams is an emerging star from the slot and they had 2024 second-round pick Max Melton poised to have a greater role as a potential starter, while still with Star Thomas on the roster. In free agency, they brought in veteran Asante Samuel Jr. While a team can never have enough players who can cover on defense, it was an interesting move or pursuit. Then they drafted two cornerbacks — Will Johnson in the second round and Denzel Burke in the fifth round. The situation with Murphy-Bunting, whatever it stems from, doesn't appear to have come out of nowhere. They likely knew about it all offseason. This seems to be similar to when the Cardinals traded for receiver Hollywood Brown when DeAndre Hopkins was going to be suspended for the first six games of the season. What this move now does is open the door for Johnson to step into a starting or at least a major contributing role, and it makes it more likely for Burke to make the team. It also makes it more likely that someone like Thomas will not have to be traded or cut before the season. Cardinals place CB Sean Murphy-Bunting on NFI list, ending his 2025 season

Arizona cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting was placed on the non-football injury list Thursday and will miss the entire 2025 season for the Cardinals. The move to put Murphy-Bunting on the reserve list, where he will not count against the 90-man roster, was released on the NFL's daily transactions report. The Cardinals had not made any announcement about the move and there is no immediate word on what the injury is. Non-football injuries are any injury that happens away from an NFL facility, including working out to get ready for the season. An NFI designation can lead to players forfeiting their salaries. Murphy-Bunting was supposed to be guaranteed a $7.7 million base salary this season as part of the three-year, $22.5 million deal he signed last offseason, but that is now in jeopardy. Murphy-Bunting started 15 games in his first season in Arizona and had three interceptions and five passes defensed. He was in the mix to be a starter again in 2025. The Cardinals drafted Will Johnson in the second round, with 2024 second-rounder Max Melton also in the mix at outside cornerback. The 27-year-old Murphy-Bunting was originally drafted by Tampa Bay in the second round in 2019 and helped the Buccaneers win the Super Bowl in his second season when he had three interceptions in four playoff games. He spent the 2023 season with Tennessee before joining Arizona. Murphy-Bunting has 11 interceptions and 34 passes defensed in 82 regular-season games with three more interceptions and a fumble recovery in six playoff games. Reporting by The Associated Press.
