Cardinals place CB Sean Murphy-Bunting on NFI list, ending his 2025 season
Arizona cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting was placed on the non-football injury list Thursday and will miss the entire 2025 season for the Cardinals.
The move to put Murphy-Bunting on the reserve list, where he will not count against the 90-man roster, was released on the NFL's daily transactions report. The Cardinals had not made any announcement about the move and there is no immediate word on what the injury is.
Non-football injuries are any injury that happens away from an NFL facility, including working out to get ready for the season. An NFI designation can lead to players forfeiting their salaries.
Murphy-Bunting was supposed to be guaranteed a $7.7 million base salary this season as part of the three-year, $22.5 million deal he signed last offseason, but that is now in jeopardy.
Murphy-Bunting started 15 games in his first season in Arizona and had three interceptions and five passes defensed. He was in the mix to be a starter again in 2025.
The Cardinals drafted Will Johnson in the second round, with 2024 second-rounder Max Melton also in the mix at outside cornerback.
The 27-year-old Murphy-Bunting was originally drafted by Tampa Bay in the second round in 2019 and helped the Buccaneers win the Super Bowl in his second season when he had three interceptions in four playoff games.
He spent the 2023 season with Tennessee before joining Arizona.
Murphy-Bunting has 11 interceptions and 34 passes defensed in 82 regular-season games with three more interceptions and a fumble recovery in six playoff games.

"After the retirement of Zack Martin, the Dallas Cowboys' offensive line is Smith's group now," the article said. "He's been a Pro Bowler each of the last two years and should be in the mix for Protector of the Year, especially if the Cowboys' passing attack fares well with Dak Prescott throwing to the tandem of CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens." The names listed above Smith were Penei Sewell, Tristan Wirfs, Jordan Mailata, Creed Humphrey, Trent Williams, Rashawn Slater, Quinn Meinerz, Chris Lindstrom, Laremy Tunsil and Joe Thuney. At just 24 years old, Smith was acknowledged earlier this offseason as one of just two offensive lineman named to the top 25 under 25 list that showcases the league's best young talent. This season, Smith will look to lead a very inexperienced offensive line protecting QB Dak Prescott. The longest-tenured player in the projected starting lineup is five-year pro Terence Steele, with Smith being the next oldest. If he continues his exceptional play, not only will the Tulsa product be in the running to walk away with a new award, he could be expecting a major pay day in his rookie extension. It was just a month ago when Florio mocked the Dallas Cowboys owner for not living up to his hype of a "substantive" trade being in the works. "Fans and media have begun to wake up to the notion that Cowboys owner and G.M. Jerry Jones is more carnival barker than trophy chaser," he wrote. "It's not about winning, it's about being interesting. And he always finds ways to be interesting." That's quite the accusation, essentially claiming that the Hall-of-Fame owner with three Super Bowl rings doesn't care about winning football games. Worse, when Jones pulled off the trade for receiver George Pickens it was somehow still wasn't enough for Florio. Instead of crediting him for making a deal for a No. 2 receiver, Florio twisted it into a new criticism. Advertisement "Regardless of how it plays out," Florio wrote, "owner/G.M. Jerry Jones has added another spinning plate to his endless collection of incomplete contracts." Sounds to us like Florio may be the hard-headed one, refusing to apologize to Jones and now concocting another ridiculous premise when it comes to Micah Parsons. Jones signed quarterback Dak Prescott to his mega contract last season just days before the Week 1 opener. Florio's theory is that the delay wasn't because of negotiations, but rather publicity. "There are many reasons why the Cowboys have gone 30 years without an appearance in the NFC Championship," Florio writes. "One very real reason is the chronic stubbornness of owner Jerry Jones to pay his core players sooner than later. Advertisement "Our guess? He knows it. And he'd rather have the latest unsettled contract become the top story for sports media than to see his team benefit from the relative irrelevance of peace." Again, this a damning contention: Accusing Jones of sabotaging Parsons' happiness and the team's locker room chemistry all for a couple of headlines. Jerry is a master marketer. During an episode of the Dudes on Dudes podcast with former New England Patriots' teammate Julian Edelman, future Hall-of-Fame tight end Rob Gronkowski took his hyperbole to a hysterical level. When a caller predicted that Pickens would help the Cowboys finally win a Super Bowl this season, Gronkowski barked in disapproval. "This guy has definitely drank too many Coors Lights," Gronk said. "I mean, he's out of mind ... probably 25 beers deep. Gotta be. George Pickens? I mean there's so many other things that the Cowboys had to address, They had one of the worst offseasons of all time."
