Five inmates still on run from Orleans Parish jailbreak; U.S. Marshals says possible help could be involved

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — It's been six days since 10 inmates escaped from the Orleans Parish jail. Five are already back in custody, but law enforcement is searching for the remaining five escapees. 'Everyone should continue to stay alert. If you see something, you should say something,' said Attorney General Liz Murrill. Murrill and state agencies are vowing the search for the remaining escapees of Orleans Parish Jail remain a top priority. Attorney General Murrill and District Attorney Jason Williams tour Orleans Parish Jail Over the last few days, numerous law enforcement agencies have been seen actively searching throughout the city to bring them back into custody. 'We're not going to stop looking. We want them to know that,' said U.S. Marshal Deputy Chief Brian Fair. Fair says this has been a tedious investigation, as normally they are searching for one or two fugitives at once, never 10. 'It does make process and all the information, a little harder, but to say the least, because there's just such a volume of information on each of these people that went on the run,' said Fair. He is also not ruling out that some of the escapees could now be out of state. 'They could be in the area; they could be out of the area. We have to investigate all the leads we're given, but they do have ties to family and friends in the New Orleans area. So, it's a good possibility they're here. Although some of those ties may have helped them leave town or leave the state,' said Fair. Man claims to be selling NOLA prison escapee's orange slippers on Facebook Marketplace While the search for the remaining inmates continues, three others have been arrested for helping them escape, and officials say more arrests could follow. 'It's very possible, yes, additional people could be arrested along the way. We're fairly confident that the individuals on the run are getting some assistance,' said Fair. 'If you help them, you will be prosecuted. You shouldn't help them. It is perpetuating the threat to public safety. By doing that, the longer that you know, the more help that they get, the more charges they're going to be,' said Murrill. As the search narrows, law enforcement is confident they will be captured. 'We only have to be good one time, whereas they have to look over their shoulder every day, 24 hours a day,' said Fair. A $20,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of the remaining five inmates. Attorney General Murrill and District Attorney Jason Williams tour Orleans Parish Jail

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — With half of the inmates from the May 16 jailbreak captured, the hunt continues for the remaining escapees. 'We are doing everything we can, and we will recover them and they will face additional charges,' said Attorney General Liz Murrill. Murrill and District Attorney Jason Williams toured the jail, getting a first-hand look a how those 10 inmates were able to escape. Fifth inmate captured following Orleans Justice Center escapes Avoiding questions about funding problems and Sheriff Susan Hutson's future, Williams says his focus is on the escape and bringing those responsible to justice. 'Where they were able to scale the wall, what door they went out of, and how to secure it. I want to see the back portion of that toilet area. So we're going to stand by how it was defeated, so we can figure out who was involved in this jailbreak, who assisted, who knew and when. This is just the beginning of that inquiry,' said Williams. The attorney general says that her focus is on hardening the security of the jail. That includes replacing faulty locks and door hinges that the inmates exploited to make their escape. 'If we can make sure that they get the right locks and hinges on their doors, you know, that's a big deal. Like that saves us a lot of money on the back end. To me, that's kind of an absolute objective for all of us,' said Murrill. Two arrested, accused of helping Orleans Justice Center escapees Murrill also says that an effort must be made to make sure judges do not allow inmates to spend an extended time in the parish prison while awaiting trial and sentencing. 'We aren't going to get long-term structural change in the system at this facility unless we can manage the amount of time that people are having to spend here. And that means their cases have to be moved,' said Murrill. Murrill adds this is only the beginning of a long investigation on how to make sure the facility is fully equipped. 'There's going to be a lot of interest in continuing to dissect what happened, who, what, when, how, where, why. All of those questions will continue to be evaluated not just by me, but by other people who have decision-making authority,' said Murrill. Maintenance worker arrested for aiding breakout of 10 New Orleans jail inmates

May 20 (UPI) -- A maintenance worker was arrested for aiding in the escape of nearly a dozen inmates from a jail in New Orleans. Sterling Willings, 33, was arrested Monday night for allegedly facilitating the escape of 10 inmates housed at Orleans Parish Justice Center in Louisiana and was booked "without incident" into a Plaquemines Parish jail Tuesday morning, according to ABC, CBS and NOLA. According to state Attorney General Liz Murrill, Williams told agents that one of the escapees advised him to turn the water off in the cell where the inmates escaped from. "This is a continuing investigation, and we will provide updates as often as possible," Murrill said Tuesday in a statement. Throughout the investigation, three other jail employees were suspended as the search for the remaining six inmates -- Antoine Massey, Lenton Vanburen, Jermaine Donald, Leo Tate, Derrick Groves and Corey Boyd -- carries on. "We will uncover all the facts eventually and anyone who aided and abetted will be prosecuted to the full extent the law allows," added Murrill. Three of the escapees -- Robert Moody, Dkenan Dennis and Kendall Myles -- were apprehended within 24 hours and a fourth was arrested Monday, 21-year-old Gary C. Price. On Friday, the 10 men escaped via a wall behind a toilet at around 1:00 a.m. CDT. Meanwhile, the escape wasn't discovered until a routine headcount at 8:30 a.m., hours after the successful break. More than 200 officers with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies were participating in the manhunt after the 10 men escaped Friday morning from Orleans Parish with authorities alerted in Texas, Mississippi, Arkansas, Georgia, Oklahoma and Tennessee. Williams allegedly shut off the toilet water so the crew could make their exit after ripping the toilet off its foundation. They breached a wall behind it, used a loading dock door to exit the jail and scaled fences with blankets to protect themselves from getting cut by barbed wire, according to officials. Finally, they crossed Interstate 10 and dispersed into a nearby neighborhood and took off their inmate clothes. Sheriff Susan Hutson speculated the jailbreak could be an inside job. "Even Stevie Wonder can see that this was an inside job," Orleans Parish District Attorney Jason Williams told ABC Tuesday morning, whose office is investigating the breakout. Republican Gov. Jeff Landry, meanwhile, has ordered a comprehensive jail audit. "Ten violent offenders don't make their way into a pod made for two and make good their escape through concrete, rebar and barbed wire, without there being some sort of inside assistance," Williams added. The district attorney speculated that "greed, avarice, friendship, the motives that cause men to do bad things" could be among reasons why a jail employee would risk their job to help a prisoner escape. Williams, the prison worker, is now facing at least 10 counts of simple to principle escape and one charge of office malfeasance.
