Independent Election Commission: Political Modernization Ongoing and in Jordan's National Interest - Jordan News

Independent Election Commission: Political Modernization Ongoing and in Jordan's National Interest The Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Independent Election Commission, Musa Maaytah, emphasized that the legitimacy of elections stems from citizens' confidence in them and the reflection of their will through the electoral process. He underscored the importance of the trust the Commission has gained from public opinion and from citizens' belief that their vote makes a difference. اضافة اعلان Speaking during the launch of a public opinion poll conducted by the Nama Center on women's political participation in the 2024 parliamentary elections and the impact of new legislation, Maaytah stated that the Commission will continue to implement the law, which he described as the foundation of democracy. He added that partisan political work is legitimate, and party goals must be pursued exclusively through peaceful means. He affirmed that the political modernization process is ongoing and represents a national interest for Jordan. Maaytah pointed out that the Commission is not a static body—it plays a vital role in enhancing political participation and developing a party-based life that reflects the diversity of Jordanian society. He stressed that the Commission operates based on the Constitution and the law and aims to empower all groups and political movements while upholding the rule of law. He also noted a significant drop in the percentage of citizens who believe that parliamentary elections do not reflect the will of the people—from 47% to 22%—and a rise in satisfaction with the elections from 35% to 60%. This, he said, reflects a positive shift in public confidence in the electoral process. Source: Al-Mamlaka TV

Maaytah: No Entity Has the Right to Claim It Protects Religion in Jordan - Jordan News

Maaytah: No Entity Has the Right to Claim It Protects Religion in Jordan Musa Maaytah, Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Independent Election Commission, stated on Thursday that no entity has the right to claim it is the protector of religion in Jordan, emphasizing that everyone must respect the country's religious and ethnic diversity. اضافة اعلان During the launch of public opinion poll results on women's political participation in the 2024 parliamentary elections, Maaytah stressed that the protection of religion lies with the institutions established by law, not with those who merely claim to do so. He pointed out that His Majesty King Abdullah II has, for years, been the clear and consistent voice fighting for the Palestinian cause. Maaytah affirmed that Jordan has given much in support of the Palestinian cause, including the sacrifices of its martyrs, and continues to do so. He stressed that under the leadership of His Majesty, Jordan remains committed to defending Palestine, and that this responsibility lies solely with the state, as it holds the mandate for such efforts. 'We will not forget the blood of our martyrs, nor those who tried to exploit the nation,' he declared. He further emphasized that the Jordanian state is solely responsible for determining how support—whether financial, political, or organizational—is extended to the Palestinian people. Maaytah also highlighted the importance of allowing all political groups and viewpoints to exist in Jordan's public sphere, provided they respect the Jordanian state, its constitution, and its laws. Jordan Election Commission warns Islamic Action Front Party over unregistered office

Jordan's Independent Election Commission (IEC) said Sunday the commission has issued an official letter to the Islamic Action Front (IAF) party, citing a violation of legal provisions and granting it a 60-day period to rectify its status. IEC Chief Commissioner Musa Maaytah said they will strictly enforce the law against any political party violating party laws or regulations governing political activity in Jordan. Maaytah clarified that the party's violation stems from its use of a headquarters not registered in the IEC's records. Additionally, the unregistered location lacked a signboard bearing the party's name, which contravenes Article 16 of the Parties Law. On Saturday, Jordan authorities said they thwarted an attempt by several individuals, including a member of parliament, to smuggle documents and papers from a location linked to the –outlawed– Muslim Brotherhood group The source stated that the Aqaba attorney general ordered a search of the site Friday evening after suspicions arose of illegal activity and its use by the banned Muslim Brotherhood group. Authorities, who had been monitoring the location, observed activity involving several individuals, including the lawmaker, prompting their intervention. The individuals were intercepted leaving the site with documents hidden in black bags. The documents had been shredded inside the premises. The individuals were taken to a security center for questioning. The lawmaker returned a short time later with two other people, attempting to re-enter the site. They were denied entry and escorted to the security center, though the lawmaker was not detained at that point. The lawmaker was summoned for questioning by judicial authorities as the tenant of the premises. The lawmaker claimed in his confession that the location was an apartment leased for a political party he belongs to and that the party had authorized him to sign the lease agreement. However, official records showed that the party had not declared this location in its official submissions to the Independent Election Commission – according to authorities.

IEC to implement digital identity for upcoming elections

Independent Elections Committee (IEC) Chairman Musa Maaytah on Monday announces that the digital identity card will be accepted in the next Parliamentary elections (Petra photo) AMMAN — Independent Elections Committee (IEC) Chairman Musa Maaytah on Monday announced that the digital identity card will be accepted in the next Parliamentary elections. 'The digital identity via the Sanad application will be accepted in the upcoming elections so that we can ease up the voting process,' Maaytah said. The minister added that the aim is also to encourage citizens to actively take part in the upcoming elections, according to a statement by the IEC. The Sanad application, launched by the government in February 2020 as part of the fifth executive package of the government's economic program, aims to support electronic services and improve the business environment. 'We want to move forward with the digital transformation project and encourage citizens to make use of the electronic services,' Maaytah stressed. The minister's remarks were made during a meeting between the Civil Status and Passports Department (CSPD) and IEC officials and the technical team. The minister added that the IEC worked with the Ministry of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurs and the CSPD to develop a special electronic mechanism that would 'show the digital identification information via Sanad application to the election committee members who will be present at polling stations'. Maaytah added that the IEC is currently working on 'substituting paperwork by digitalising the entire election process for the next elections'. 'The digitalising process will hopefully work to ensure more transparency and integrity of the election process and will speed up the voting and result procedure,' according to Maaytah. The minister also revealed during the meeting that the IEC held several training sessions related to the digital process for individuals who will be part of the committees that will be stationed at polling stations. Meanwhile, the CSPD Director Ghaith Tayeb said that the use of digital identification in the upcoming election process is part of the National Digital Transformation Strategy. An official at the IEC told The Jordan Times that both the smart identification card and the digital identification via the Sanad application will be accepted in the next Parliamentary elections.
