Gokul Nagar residents blow a fuse over TGSPDCL laxity
Hyderabad: A tense situation prevailed on Monday when the residents of Gokul Nagar in Ramanthapur protested against the Telangana Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGSPDCL) after its officials arrived to enquire about a tragic incident that claimed the lives of six people. The victims were electrocuted during a Srikrishna Janmashtami procession on Sunday night. On Monday, when the TGSPDCL Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) Musharraf Faruqui arrived to enquire about the incident, the residents blocked the officials and accused them of negligence. Dozens of residents gathered and raised slogans against the department. Despite police attempts to disperse them, the residents continued their protest, resulting in significant traffic disruption along the Ramanthapur-Uppal route and surrounding areas. The residents held the officials responsible for the incident, alleging they failed to take measures and address the issue of dangling wires despite receiving several representations. They said that several wires had been lying low, with damaged wires dangling in various places, and that officials failed to take measures that could have averted the tragedy. The residents complained about the lackadaisical attitude of the local officials to the CMD during his visit. They said that even after repeated complaints, the officials failed to address the issue. Musharraf Faruqui then intervened and calmed the residents, assuring that necessary action would be taken against those responsible for the incident. Faruqui assured that the incident would be reported to the government and that steps would be taken accordingly. He announced that as an immediate measure, all unused cables in the area would be removed and that potentially hazardous electric wires would be rectified. He also stated that similar corrective actions would take place throughout the city in preparation for the upcoming festivals.

SPDCL says there's no negligence of utility for electrocution
HYDERABAD Chairman and Managing Director of the Southern Power Distribution Company of Telangana Ltd (TGSPDCL) Md. Musharraf Faruqui visited the location where five persons were electrocuted to death on Sunday when the chariot of Srikrishna Janmashtami celebrations they were pulling came in contact with live wires in Ramanthapur. He enquired with the local officials of the Discom as also the local residents about the accident. The local officials of the power utility informed the CMD that an unused television cable snapped and had fallen on the 11kV overhead line and then onto the chariot with the metal/iron frame allowing transmission of power and led to electrocution. They stated that there was no negligence on part of the Discom officials. At the accident site, the overhead 11 kV line was passing from height of over 20 feet from the ground and the overhead line had been changed into aerial bundled (AB) cable in the past. They blamed the television cable between two buildings across the road for the accident. The CMD instructed the Superintending Engineer of Habsiguda to investigate into the accident and submit a report. Meanwhile, the local residents surrounded the TGSPDCL authorities and demanded justice/compensation from the utility by raising slogans against them when the CMD reached the location along with local officials.

Be on your toes always: TGSPDCL boss to babus
Hyderabad: Musharraf Faruqui, Chairman and Managing Director of Southern Power Distribution Company of Telangana Limited (TGSPDCL), has directed officials to ensure continuous availability to consumers and to conduct regular interaction programmes every Wednesday in bastis and colonies. Speaking at a meeting held recently at the company's headquarters in Mint Compound with Chief Engineers, Superintending Engineers, and Divisional Engineers, the CMD stated that out of 8,681 11kV feeders under the company's jurisdiction, 6,885 are currently monitored through the Feeder Outage Management System. Efforts are actively underway to bring the remaining feeders under this comprehensive system as well. He announced that Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based services are being introduced at the distribution level to record details of power demand, supply, and interruptions online, providing immediate alerts to relevant engineers. Analysing these details, he noted, will enable the delivery of more efficient service. While the Feeder Outage Management System is already operational at substations and feeders, the integration of AI-based services is expected to further assist in identifying supply issues and defects at the field level, leading to enhanced service provision for consumers. The CMD also issued clear directives to officials, instructing them to monitor power supply daily at the Distribution Transformer (DTR) level. Divisional Engineers and Superintending Engineers were specifically told to focus on feeders and DTRs experiencing frequent issues, conduct thorough field visits, and take all necessary remedial actions promptly. Noting that power demand, particularly within Greater Hyderabad, is increasing significantly each year, the CMD instructed officials to prepare detailed reports by 15 August outlining the measures required to effectively address this growing demand. He further emphasised that services such as sanctioning new connections must be processed strictly as per Standards of Performance (SOP) within the stipulated timeframes, ensuring that no consumer complaints arise.

Electricity Dept staff directed to patrol areas with good tree cover as branches falling on power lines disrupt supply
HYDERABAD Field staff of Southern Power Distribution Company of Telangana Ltd (TGSPDCL) was directed to regularly patrol areas having good tree cover as an analysis of power supply disruptions in feeders found that tripping mainly occurred when tree branches fell or got in contact with the power lines. They were asked to take necessary steps such as cutting/trimming tree branches that spread close to power lines. To ensure uninterrupted power supply during the monsoon season, chairman and managing director of the TGSPDCL Md. Musharraf Faruqui asked the engineers and field staff of the utility to constantly monitor the 33 kV and low-tension transmission and distribution network, critical feeders and distribution transformers. In a video conference held with chief engineers (CEs) and superintending engineers (SEs) from the utility's headquarters in Hyderabad on Monday (June 9, 2025), he instructed the SEs to conduct field inspections regularly and review the supply position with field staff once a week and focus on feeders facing most interruption. He also wanted them to conduct inspection of lines, feeders and AB (air break) switches and take steps to prevent recurrence of problems. The CMD asked all the supervisory and field staff to be available in their offices during heavy rains and warnings issued by the weather department. He said that the auto-rickshaws in the fuse-off-call offices were equipped with a GIS system so that they could reach the location of the complaints swiftly. The survey taken up as part of the Telangana GIS, Asset Management, Inspection and Maintenance System (TGAIMS) in the past had enabled the utility with complete information on the electric poles and distribution transformers. He asked the authorities to take up a similar survey in the case of 33 kV and low-tension networks. In-charge directors of the utility Narasimhulu and K. Saibaba, chief engineers Chakrapani, Balaswamy, Kamesh and others participated in the video conference from the Discom's headquarters.

Ceiling fans are used almost everyday; their power consumption can be cut by half by switching to BLDC tech
A ceiling fan is used at homes almost throughout the year. The amount of electricity needed to run it and the money spent on the bill can be cut by more than a half by switching from a conventional fan to Brushless Direct Current (BLDC) fan. A 75 Watt conventional fan when used for 16 hours a day consumes 1.2 Kilowatts per hour (kWh). At a unit (kWh) cost of ₹6.50, the electricity bill per annum only for a fan comes up to ₹2857. A 32 Watt Brushless Direct Current (BLDC) fan rotates around the same speed. It needs only 0.51 kWh when used for 16 hours. The per annum bill for a BLDC fan is — at the same tariff — is ₹1,208 per annum, which is a more than half the bill for conventional fan, according to information from Southern Power Distribution Company of Telangana Limited (TGSPDCL). This is one of the methods to reduce demand for power which helps in conserving the environment and saving money as well. The various methods are in focus ahead of the World Environment Day. A BLDC fan — which runs on Direct Current — consumes less energy. A BLDC fan costs around double of what a conventional fan does. However, the overall money saved is more by buying a BLDC fan, as per information from TGSPDCL. Similarly, a conventional tube light of 40 Watt consumes 0.4 kWh. And, a LED Batten of 20Watt consumes 0.2 kWh, according to the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE). 'Replace traditional incandescent or CFL bulbs with LED lights, which consume 75-80% less electricity. Choose appliances with 5-star or high-star ratings from BEE, such as refrigerators, ACs, and washing machines, which are designed to consume less electricity,' said Musharraf Faruqui, chairman & managing director of TGSPDCL The senior official said that use of electricity can be reduced if air conditioners are set at 24-26°C, as recommended by BEE, and if filters are cleaned monthly.
