Rise and rise of RCB captain Rajat Patidar
AHMEDABAD: As Rajat Patidar got down on one knee and smashed Musheer Khan into the New PCA Stadium stands, leading Royal Challengers Bengaluru into the 2025 IPL final, he had become a part of an elite club of captains to achieve the feat. Patidar joined Anil Kumble, Daniel Vettori and Virat Kohli — they are the ones to have led RCB to previous IPL finals — in taking the franchise with a massive fan base to their fourth summit clash in 18 years. At this point, it is well established that RCB Director Mo Bobat asked Patidar whether he would be interested in taking the leadership role and from coming back into the team as an injury replacement in 2022 to leading the franchise to the 2025 IPL final, he has had a meteoric rise. And so is the fact that he was all set to get married during the IPL season before being called in as an injury replacement for Luvnith Sisodia. However, it wasn't the first time Patidar was asked if he wanted to be captain. In fact, when the Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association and head coach Chandrakant Pandit offered Patidar the Ranji captaincy four years ago, he wished to focus on his performance. "Initially, when we offered Ranji captaincy, Chandu sir asked him, and he was reluctant. He said, 'No, I want to concentrate on my batting',' MPCA secretary Sanjeev Rao recalls. And he did concentrate on his batting. Patidar had two stellar seasons with the bat, averaging over 80 in red-ball cricket during the 2021-22 and 2022 seasons. In the season after, he went on to accumulate 884 runs and soon reaped the rewards with an India call-up. After two seasons with RCB, he made his ODI debut in 2023 and then played Test cricket for India next year. With all the experience and exposure he had since the captaincy offer when Pandit took over as head coach, when Bobat asked the question, Patidar wanted to give it a go in domestic cricket. He went to MPCA and Pandit and asked if he could lead the white-ball sides. 'He volunteered himself this year in the Mushtaq Ali Trophy, 'Chandu sir, I'll lead the team.' He said, 'Since Shubham Sharma was our Ranji captain, and he is doing well, he shouldn't be disturbed.' When Chandu sir offered him T20 captaincy, he readily accepted,' says Rao. As fate would have it, things fell into place for Patidar and MP. He led the state side to the final of the domestic T20 tournament — the knockouts were played in Bengaluru. Patidar smashed 428 runs at 61.14 average and 186.08 strike rate, taking the team to the summit clash. However, they fell short in the final hurdle against the Shreyas Iyer-led Mumbai. During these knockout games, Patidar and Bobat spent a lot of time talking about captaincy and his leadership. Bobat, too, gave him confidence that he could succeed as captain.

After early elimination Dhoni's CSK takes big step, call India's fastest T20 centurion for mid season trials
MS Dhoni. New Delhi: Chennai Super Kings (CSK), led by MS Dhoni, invited Urvil Patel, known for his record-breaking T20 century, along with Aman Khan and Salman Nizar, to participate in mid-season IPL 2025 trials. The trials, held in Chennai on April 27th and 28th, involved three players and were conducted by the five-time champions despite their elimination from the current IPL season. Wasim Jaffer, a former Indian cricketer, reported having inside information regarding Urvil Patel's involvement in Chennai Super Kings' mid-season trials. 'I've heard, I've got back room news that CSK have called Urvil Patel, the guy who got a couple of hundreds in the Mushtaq Ali Trophy. I'm surprised that he was not picked by any franchise,' Jaffer said while speaking on ESPNCricinfo. 'I was surprised. Even Ayush Mhatre was picked ahead of him. He's been asked to trial there, so I don't know what's cooking there,' Jaffer added. Urvil demonstrated aggressive batting during his trial matches. His first innings yielded 41 runs from 20 balls, including two sixes. He improved upon this in his second innings, scoring a fifty from just 20 balls, hitting three sixes. Urvil, a wicket-keeper batsman from Gujarat, impressed Chennai Super Kings (CSK) scouts during recent trials with a strong batting performance. While he previously participated in CSK trials, Ayush Mhatre, a Mumbai cricketer, ultimately secured a contract with the team. Urvil Patel set a new record for the fastest T20 century by an Indian in the 2024-25 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, achieving the feat in 28 balls against Tripura. His impressive SMAT performance included 315 runs across six matches, boasting a remarkable strike rate of 229.92. Despite this success, Patel, a former Gujarat Titans player, remains unsigned by any IPL franchise, even as a replacement. Aman Khan, an all-rounder known for his pace bowling, has prior IPL experience with the Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capitals. His recent Chennai trials showcased impressive power hitting, including two sixes. In contrast, Salman Nizar, a Kerala batsman, is awaiting his IPL debut. His strong performances in the recent Ranji Trophy, where Kerala reached the final, brought him to prominence. Chennai Super Kings' next match is against Royal Challengers Bangalore on May 3rd at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Chennai Super Kings Summon Urvil Patel For Mid-Season Trials: Report
Urvil Patel made the headlines when he smacked a 28-ball century in the 2024-25 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, the fastest by an Indian batter in the format. Chennai Super Kings, who were on Wednesday eliminated from IPL 2025 after suffering their eighth loss in 10 games, have reportedly called up Gujarat wicketkeeper-batter Urvil Patel for mid-season trials, as revealed by former India cricketer Wasim Jaffer. The sudden callup despite their season close to a disastrous end indicates the beginning of a probable succession planning in the Chennai core group amidst an embarrassing campaign. Jaffer mentioned that he heard through sources about Urvil being called for a trial in the back half of the season. 'I've heard, I've got back room news that CSK have called Urvil Patel, the guy who got a couple of hundreds in the Mushtaq Ali Trophy. I'm surprised that he was not picked by any franchise," Jaffer said while speaking on ESPNCricinfo. 'I was surprised. Even Ayush Mhatre was picked ahead of him. He's been asked to trial there, so I don't know what's cooking there," Jaffer added. Chennai signed Mhatre as Ruturaj Gaikwad's replacement after asking the teenager to give a trial during the season itself. Chennai were eliminated from the Indian Premier League playoff race on Wednesday when they lost to the Punjab Kings, their eighth loss in 10 outings. Riding on the late four-wicket haul from Yuzvendra Chahal (4/32), including a hat-trick, Punjab bowled out Chennai for 190, and despite a little stumbling towards the end, the visitors got over the line with two deliveries to spare, scoring 194/6. Punjab have moved up to second in the table with 13 points while Chennai are on 10th with just four points and their improbable play-off hopes too were eliminated with this result. Prabhsimran Singh had a narrow escape while attempting a reverse sweep off Ravindra Jadeja, as the ball crashed into his pads in front of the wickets. But the on-field umpire's call of not out stayed even as Chennai sought DRS intervention, which they don't get wrong very often, with Dhoni behind the stumps. Besides the former India captain, CSK have the services of Vansh Bedi and Devon Conway as wicketkeeper-batters and hence it is a bit unusual to now call up Urvil for a similar role.
