Bad Company, Cyndi Lauper, Outkast, The White Stripes Lead Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2025

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has officially unveiled its 2025 class, confirming Bad Company, Chubby Checker, Joe Cocker, Cyndi Lauper, Outkast, Soundgarden and The White Stripes as this year's inductees. Ryan Seacrest announced the inductees on ABC's American Idol on Sunday night, the second year in a row the show revealed the Rock Hall class (ABC parent company Disney has the TV rights to the event). Aside from the performer category, Salt-N-Pepa and Warren Zevon are being honored with the Musical Influence award. Thom Bell, Nicky Hopkins and Carol Kaye are getting the Musical Excellence Award, and Lenny Waronker — the producer and executive best known for his longtime stint as the president of Warner Records — is this year's Ahmet Ertegun Award recipient. A special will air on ABC at a later date. The Rock Hall will announce on-sale information for tickets for the event at a later date. This will be the fourth time the induction will take place in Los Angeles, and the first time since 2022. 'Each of these inductees created their own sound and attitude that had a profound impact on culture and helped to change the course of Rock & Roll forever,' John Sykes Chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, said in a statement. 'Their music gave a voice to generations and influenced countless artists that followed in their footsteps.' The nominees who missed the cut this year are The Black Crowes, Mariah Carey, Billy Idol, Joy Division/New Order, Maná, Oasis and Phish. The Crowes, Idol, Maná and Phish had never been nominated before. Phish handily won this year's Rock Hall fan vote (which counts for one ballot in the actual voting process), while Bad Company took second and Idol came in third. Joy Division/New Order were nominated back in 2023, while Oasis and Carey were both nominated for the first time in 2024. Last year's Rock Hall class included Cher, Mary J. Blige, Ozzy Osbourne and A Tribe Called Quest. Artists become eligible for the Rock Hall 25 years after their first commercial release. Checker, Cocker, Bad Company and Outkast are all getting in on their first nominations. Cocker's induction comes 11 years after the English singer died back in 2014, and eight years after Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell's tragic death in 2017. Lauper and The White Stripes were both previously nominated in 2023, while this was Soundgarden's third time on the ballot after nominations in 2020 and 2023. Checker's waited the longest for an induction out of this year's class, having released his first album back in 1960. Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Welcomes Class Of 2025

KUALA LUMPUR, April 29 (Bernama) -- The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation has unveiled its 2025 inductees, celebrating a vibrant and eclectic mix of artists and contributors who have helped shape the sound and spirit of rock & roll. The announcement was made live by Ryan Seacrest during the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame episode of 'American Idol', where the Top 14 finalists performed songs by past inductees as America voted for the Top 12. 'Each of these inductees created their own sound and attitude that had a profound impact on culture and helped to change the course of Rock & Roll forever. Their music gave a voice to generations and influenced countless artists that followed in their footsteps,' said Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Chairman, John Sykes in a statement. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame recognises artists and contributors across several distinct categories. The Performer category honours those whose original music and cultural influence have played a defining role in shaping the direction of rock & roll. The Musical Influence Award is given to artists whose style and innovation have deeply inspired the genre and its evolution, while the Musical Excellence Award celebrates individuals—whether artists, musicians, songwriters, or producers—whose creativity and legacy have significantly impacted the music industry. Lastly, the Ahmet Ertegun Award acknowledges non-performing professionals whose work behind the scenes has been instrumental in the growth and artistic development of rock & roll and its wider cultural resonance. This year's Performer Category features a wide-ranging lineup, including Bad Company, Chubby Checker, Joe Cocker, Cyndi Lauper, Outkast, Soundgarden, and The White Stripes. These artists represent a blend of genres and eras, many of whom are first-time nominees. In other categories, Salt-N-Pepa and Warren Zevon will receive the Musical Influence Award, while Thom Bell, Nicky Hopkins, and Carol Kaye will be honoured with the Musical Excellence Award. The Ahmet Ertegun Award will be presented to Lenny Waronker for his role in shaping the creative direction of popular music. To be eligible for induction, an individual artist or band must have released its first commercial recording at least 25 years prior to the year of nomination.

(AP Photo) By MARK KENNEDY First-time nominees Chubby Checker, Joe Cocker and Bad Company will be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, a class that also includes pop star Cyndi Lauper, the hip-hop pioneers Outkast, the rock duo the White Stripes and grunge masters Soundgarden. Salt-N-Pepa, the first female rap act to achieve gold and platinum status, and the late singer-songwriter Warren Zevon will get the Musical Influence Award. The late record producer Thom Bell, pianist Nicky Hopkins and bassist Carol Kaye will each get the Musical Excellence Award. The late Cocker, who sang at Woodstock and was best known for his cover of The Beatles' 'With a Little Help From My Friends,' had the backing of Billy Joel, Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top and Pete Thomas, a member of Elvis Costello & The Attractions, who argued that Cocker is "about as rock and roll as it gets.' Soundgarden — with the late Chris Cornell as singer — get into the Hall on their third nomination. They follow two other grunge acts in the Hall — Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Bad Company get in having become radio fixtures with such arena-rock staples as 'Feel Like Makin' Love,' 'Can't Get Enough' and 'Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy.' The Ahmet Ertegun Award — given to nonperforming industry professionals who had a major influence on music — will go to Lenny Waronker, a former head of Warner Bros. Records who signed Prince and R.E.M., and had a part in records from Madonna, Randy Newman, the Doobie Brothers, Rickie Lee Jones, Paul Simon and Gary Clark Jr. Some nominees that didn't get in this year include Mariah Carey, Phish, Billy Idol, Joy Division/New Order, Maná, the Black Crowes and Oasis. Checker's recording of 'The Twist,' and subsequent 'Let's Twist Again' are considered among the most popular songs in the history of rock 'n' roll. The 83-year-old has expressed frustration that he hadn't been granted entry before, including telling the AP in 2014: 'I don't want to get in there when I'm 85 years old. I'll tell them to drop dead, so you better do it quick while I'm still smiling.' Lauper rose to fame in the 1980s with hits such as 'Time After Time' and 'Girls Just Want To Have Fun' and went on to win a Tony Award for 'Kinky Boots.' OutKast, made up of André 3000 and Big Boi, have six Grammys and a reputation for pushing the boundaries of hip-hop. The White Stripes — made up of Jack White and Meg White — were indie darlings in the early 2000s with such songs as 'Seven Nation Army.' Artists must have released their first commercial recording at least 25 years before they're eligible for induction. The induction ceremony will take place in Los Angeles this fall. Nominees were voted on by more than 1,200 artists, historians and music industry professionals. The selection criteria include 'an artist's impact on other musicians, the scope and longevity of their career and body of work, as well as their innovation and excellence in style and technique.' Last year, Mary J. Blige,Cher, Foreigner, A Tribe Called Quest, Kool & The Gang, Ozzy Osbourne, Dave Matthews Band and singer-guitarist Peter Frampton all were inducted. © Copyright 2025 The Associated Press.
