2026 Shelby GT500 Expected as Ford Expands Engine Production
⚡️ Read the full article on Motorious The legendary Shelby GT500 is poised for a comeback in 2026, according to a leaked union memo that reveals Ford's plans to produce a high-performance engine for the next-generation muscle car. A document from UAW Local 600, obtained by the Mustang7G forum, states that Ford's Dearborn Engine Plant is expanding its workforce and will begin building a new engine codenamed 'Legend' on the Niche Assembly line by late 2025. The memo also suggests the engine will power the highly anticipated 2026 Mustang Shelby GT500, marking the return of Ford's most powerful production pony car. Ford has not officially confirmed the details, with company spokesperson Mike Levine stating, 'We don't comment on speculation about future products.' However, sources familiar with the program indicate that the project is moving forward. The previous GT500, launched in 2020, featured a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 producing 760 horsepower, making it the most powerful street-legal Mustang ever built. It was discontinued after the 2022 model year, but demand for used models remains high, with resale values ranging from $70,000 to over $117,000, according to Edmunds. While specific details about the 'Legend' engine remain under wraps, Ford's investment in additional production shifts suggests it could be another high-performance V8, possibly integrating hybrid or electrified elements as Ford continues adapting to evolving emissions regulations. With Ford's commitment to keeping muscle cars alive in an era of electrification, the return of the GT500 would reinforce the Mustang's legacy as one of America's most celebrated performance vehicles. Enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting an official reveal, which could happen as early as 2025.

Does the Ford Mustang GTD Have a Weight Problem?
According to EPA documents, the Ford Mustang GTD appears to weigh 4,343 pounds. The Ford Mustang GTD is the first American machine to break the 7-minute barrier at the Nürburgring. The high-output Mustang uses a 5.2-liter supercharged V8 to send 815 hp to the rear wheels. It appears the hotly anticipated Ford Mustang GTD's curb weight—a figure not readily available from Ford—has made an appearance on an EPA certification sheet. Discovered by the dedicated Mustang fans on the Mustang 7G forum, Ford apparently sent the Mustang GTD to the EPA for certification last year, and the EPA certification sheet pegs the Mustang GTD's curb weight at 4,343 pounds. Now, that's heavy. However, it didn't seem to slow down this hopped-up Mustang during its lap around the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Also, this Mustang GTD's curb weight is with a full tank of fuel, a filled cooling system, and every other piece of mass that makes it function as a car. If this seems like a huge shock, you might want to look at the Ford Mustang Dark Horse's curb weight. According to Ford's build and price spec sheet for the 2024 Mustang Dark Horse, Ford's penultimate performance pony tips the scales at 3,993 pounds with its ten-speed automatic transmission or 3,949 pounds with the manual. That's within spitting distance of Car and Driver's scale numbers at 3,975 pounds. Of course, there could be some compliance padding to the scales, and we expect the real-world weight figure will make its way to the ether when these machines hit private hands—or when they start getting corner balanced and see trips to scales. Do you think this 4,343-pound number is accurate? Tell us your thoughts below.

Does Ford's Mustang GTD Really Weigh 4343 Pounds? We Have Doubts
The Nurburgring-blasting muscle car known as the 2025 Ford Mustang GTD still hasn't reached the hands of its owners, so fans have been scouring the internet for any additional information about the car they can muster. As part of this hunt for information, the die-hard folks at the Mustang 7G forum located some of Ford's official government paperwork for the car, as recently revealed on Reddit, and the documents reveal the car's curb weight for the first time. It's fair to say that the GTD is going to be a heavyweight in more than one way. According to the EPA documents linked here, the 2025 Mustang GTD tested was revealed to have a curb weight figure of 4343 pounds. For reference, our sister publication Car and Driver tested the outgoing, related S550-generation Shelby GT500 at 4171 lbs on their scales. And while the GTD does feature weight-saving features like carbon body panels, forged magnesium wheels, no rear seats, and a lightweight titanium exhaust, it also packs a trick active aerodynamics package, as well as an inboard-mounted active suspension. Add the supercharged V-8 and its requisite cooling package up front, and the weight starts to make a bit more sense. One could argue the mass makes the 'Ring lap record even more impressive, coming from a car that's about 175 lbs lighter than a Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye Widebody. It is important to note that all the reported figures for Ford's latest pony cars in these EPA filings seem a little bit high, however. The filing lists the curb weight for the new Mustang EcoBoost Performance Pack at 3920 lbs, while C/D tested that car closer to 3812 lbs. The government also lists a generic 5.0-liter equipped car at 4113 lbs, where the Dark Horse and GT models have been weighed in at 3975 lbs and 3947 lbs, respectively. That's all to say we wouldn't be surprised to see the GTD tip the scales closer to 4200 lbs, rather than the 4343 lbs claimed by the feds. That's still not exactly what you'd call featherweight, but a bit more reasonable, nonetheless. Ford plans to ship the Mustang GTD to its owners during the second quarter of the year. That means we should be able to strap testing equipment to a car before too long, letting us know exactly how portly this new pony actually is. Place your bets in the comments now.
