Myanmar startup looks to bring 'affordable housing' to Bhutan, India

TOKYO -- A Myanmar-based startup that builds affordable housing made from bamboo for displaced people in the country hopes to bring its business model to South Asian nations such as Bhutan and India, according to its co-founder. Housing Now won the Nikkei Asia Award for the enterprise's social and economic contributions to Myanmar, a country in the throes of a civil war that has displaced 3.5 million people as of May, according to the United Nations Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. Its prefabricated bamboo houses cost roughly $1,000 apiece, while their modular design allows them to be upgraded or expanded easily.

Myanmar, Thai firm sign exploration deal for Mottama offshore block Min Ye Thu project

YANGON: On May 29, the Myanmar Oil and Gas Enterprise under the Ministry of Energy, and Gulf Petroleum Myanmar Co., Ltd., a Myanmar-based Thai-owned company, signed a Production Sharing Contract (PSC) to explore, drill, produce and exploit oil and gas in Mottama offshore block (M-10) (Min Ye Thu project) at the office of the Ministry of Energy, Nay Pyi Taw. The ceremony was attended by Union Minister, Deputy Minister, Director General of the Union Cabinet, Directors General and Managing Directors of Departments, Heads of Departments, and officials from Gulf Petroleum Myanmar Co., Ltd. Union Minister U Ko Ko Lwin said that the Ministry of Energy is committed to exploring, drilling, producing and exploiting oil and gas in order to meet the country's energy needs and increase national revenue. We are continuously working to increase production," he said. "Most countries in the world still rely on natural gas, which is a clean energy source." The demand for natural gas has increased significantly, he added. "Our country has sufficient natural gas reserves and needs to systematically extract and use them. The current large offshore projects are naturally decreasing in production and the completion of the projects is approaching." Therefore, Myanmar plans to explore, drill and produce oil and natural gas in blocks with good potential. The Mottama Offshore Block M-10 will provide benefits such as increased investment in oil and natural gas exploration, drilling and production, increased foreign exchange earnings, creation of local job opportunities, and meeting the domestic demand for oil and natural gas from one source, he predicted. He urged the respective parties to work hard to achieve the project target of producing first natural gas by 2028, and thanked all the related ministries, staff from Gulf Petroleum Myanmar Co., Ltd. and the Ministry of Energy for their cooperation in signing the contract. The state currently has four major offshore projects, namely Yadana, Yetagun, Zawtika, and Shwe, which are currently exploring, drilling, and producing oil and natural gas, and two more offshore projects that are currently exploring, drilling, and producing. There are a total of six major offshore projects, so the Mottama Offshore Block M-10 is the seventh major offshore project of the country and the first offshore project to be implemented under the State Administration Council. - Eleven Media/ANN

Japan Police Arrest 16-Yr-Old from Myanmar Fraud Ring

News from Japan Society May 24, 2025 14:18 (JST) Nagoya, May 24 (Jiji Press)--Japanese police have arrested a 16-year-old for allegedly making scam calls as a member of a Myanmar-based fraud ring, it was learned Saturday. According to the Aichi prefectural police in central Japan, the suspect is a high school student in the prefectural capital of Nagoya who returned to Japan after being taken into custody by Thai authorities. After the minor did not respond to a voluntary police questioning scheduled for Monday and his whereabouts became unknown, the Aichi police tracked the suspect and found him Friday in Saitama Prefecture, north of Tokyo. They launched a compulsory investigation due to concerns that he might flee. The boy allegedly conspired with suspects Shoki Ishikawa, 32, and Tomonari Yachi, 22, on Jan. 14 to defraud a man from Mie Prefecture, central Japan, who was on a business trip to the U.S. state of Oregon. The three suspects are believed to have fraudulently obtained 9.9 million yen from the victim by making him transfer the money through a call, pretended to be from the Aichi police, to his mobile phone, saying that his bank account was being used for crime. Security forces gun down 10 rebels in Manipur encounter

1 2 3 Guwahati: Security forces shot dead 10 militants during an encounter in Manipur's Chandel district bordering Myanmar. The Eastern Command of the Indian Army confirmed the deaths through a post on 'X' on Wednesday night. The confrontation took place near border pillars where the recent fencing work had commenced along the India-Myanmar frontier. Due to the location's remoteness, police personnel dispatched to the site had not returned to Molcham police station by Thursday evening, with detailed information expected by Friday. While the identities of the deceased remain undisclosed, sources said they might belong to Myanmar-based militant groups traversing through dense forest areas on Indian territory. "Security forces tracked their movement based on intelligence inputs. It remained unclear whether these militants had camps in the area," a source said. He added, "The encounter took place in a small hilly terrain. Despite rain and adverse weather, the operation continued until Thursday." The encounter location, situated approximately 130 kilometres from Imphal, lacks mobile connectivity and has sparse population. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Highest Earning College Majors—2025 Edition Best Paying Degrees | Search Ads Learn More Undo The area, predominantly inhabited by Kuki tribals across both sides of the border, lies within the Naga-majority Chandel district. "Acting on specific intelligence on the movement of armed cadres near New Samtal village, Khengjoy Tehsil, Chandel District near the Indo-Myanmar border, an Assam Rifles unit under Spear Corps launched an operation on May 14, 2025," the Eastern Command of the Army said on X, Wednesday night. The Army stated that during the operation, troops came under fire from suspected cadres and retaliated in a 'calibrated' and 'measured' manner. "In the ensuing firefight, 10 cadres were neutralised, and a sizeable quantity of arms and ammunition was recovered," read the post. Security forces have apprehended seven militants of various banned organisations within 24 hours across Thoubal, Kakching, Bishnupur, and Churachandpur districts. These individuals were primarily involved in extortion and abduction activities targeting traders, commercial establishments and civilians. The ongoing ethnic conflict in Manipur has claimed nearly 260 lives and displaced over 60,000 people in two years, while Myanmar is experiencing civil unrest following the 2021 military coup.
