Benilde completes NCAA women's volleyball Final Four cast with win vs Perpetual

NCAA De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde ousted University of Perpetual Help System DALTA from Final Four contention after a straight sets victory, 25-15, 25-23, 25-18, on Sunday in the NCAA Season 100 women's volleyball tournament at the Filoil Centre in San Juan. With the win, the Lady Blazers' (15-2) victory also completed the women's volleyball semis cast along with Colegio de San Juan de Letran (14-3), Mapua University (11-6), and Arellano University (11-6). All other teams below the four squads have at least eight losses already. Aya Densing led the offense for the Lady Blazers with 15 points anchored on 13 attacks, while Mycah Go had 12 points. Cristy Ondangan had 11 points, while Zam Nolasco added 10 points. Chenae Basarte had 19 excellent sets. Pauline Reyes and Mika Donig had 10 points apiece to lead the Lady ALTAs who did not field Winnie Bedaña and Shai Omipon. According to a courtside report, it was part of the coaching staff's strategy as they hoped to have a different outcome in the game. Head coach Sandy Rieta told GMA News Online that Omipon was being rested as she was feeling something in her body. The victory also officially handed the Lady Blazers a twice-to-beat advantage along with Colegio de San Juan de Letran. Benilde will still play Lyceum of the Philippines University on Friday, while Perpetual will take on San Beda University on Wednesday. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

(Photo: Angela Davocol) NCAA Season 97 Most Valuable Player Mycah Go has submitted her application to the Premier Volleyball League Draft. Go confirmed the development on Friday after De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde's win against Mapua University. "Try lang, malay mo para sa akin, kung hindi, okay lang," Go said. Go previously signed up with the Farm Fresh Foxies but was not able to play as she was recovering from her ACL injury then. In her stint with the Blazers, the 25-year old outside hitter had two titles in Seasons 97 and 99, and they are gunning for their fourth straight crown this season as they officially entered the Final Four. In Season 98, Go was part of the Benilde coaching staff. While a possible PVL slot is waiting for Go, she maintained that her focus will remain with the Lady Blazers. "After naman ng NC[AA], 'yun naman na so last ko na rin naman, last push," she said. The NCAA allowed players to apply for the PVL Draft, but they should not sign professional contracts yet while the season is ongoing. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

Benilde Lady Blazers overcome late rally from Mapua, enters Final Four

NCAA De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde overcame a late rally from Mapua, 25-12, 25-19, 26-24, on Friday in the NCAA Season 100 women's volleyball tournament to officially claim a slot in the Final Four. The Lady Blazers, who are aiming for their fourth straight title, improved to 14-2 and took the top spot of the standings, while the Lady Cardinals slipped to 11-6. Benilde will also mark its fourth straight appearance in the Final Four since the league returned to action after the pandemic-halted Seasons 95 and 96. Mapua was leading 17-12 in the third set as it tried to extend the match, but Mycah Go led the fightback for the Taft-based squad and inched closer, 17-16. Tere Manalo, Freighanne Garcia, and Theresa Tambasacan further widened Mapua's lead, 21-16, but Go started another run for the Lady Blazers. As Garcia put Mapua at 23-20, Benilde managed to pull off and score four straight, with Rhea Mae Densing putting the Lady Blazers at match point. Nicole Ong then salvaged one to tie the set, but an attack error from Mapua and Cristy Ondangan's ace sealed the victory for Benilde. "Nasa top kami ngayon eh. 'Yun plano namin, makuha ang top 1 para magka-advantage," Benilde head coach Onyok Getigan said after the victory. Densing led the Lady Blazers with 20 points from 19 attacks and a block, to go with nine digs, while Ondangan added 15 points. Go, meanwhile, had 11 points. Only Raissa Ricablanca was able to score in double digits for Mapua with 11 points which went with 10 digs. The win also handed Benilde a twice-to-beat bonus with only two games remaining, and also assured Colegio de San Juan de Letran a slot in the semifinals. Benilde will still face University of Perpetual Help System DALTA and Lyceum of the Philippines University, while Mapua will close its elimination round campaign against Letran. —JKC, GMA Integrated News
