A lottery player spent $10 on a ticket — and hit the jackpot in North Carolina. On June 9, the player bought a 50X the Cash ticket that won the game's top prize, the N.C. Education Lottery wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. The winner scored $339,703 after trying their luck in Cornelius, a roughly 20-mile drive north from uptown Charlotte. The ticket was sold at the Cashion's Quik Stop convenience store on Statesville Road. 50X the Cash is a Fast Play progressive jackpot game that offers $10 tickets. To score a prize, a player must match at least one of their ticket numbers to a number from a winning set, rules show. As of about 1:45 p.m. June 9, the lucky ticket holder hadn't claimed their prize yet. In North Carolina, the winners of Fast Play games have about six months to cash in, a lottery spokesperson told McClatchy News via email.

It turns out, the lucky player won the top-tier 'Alakazam' jackpot, making their ticket worth $912,326, lottery officials told McClatchy News via email. A spokesperson previously told McClatchy News the lottery can't pinpoint where players are when they buy their tickets for digital instant games. But lottery officials know the jackpot winner is from the Duplin County town of Warsaw, a roughly 70-mile drive southeast from Raleigh. As of about 10:45 a.m. June 5, no one had claimed the Warsaw prize. In North Carolina, the winners of digital instant games have about six months to cash in, officials said.

'I was about to lay down for a nap but that made me jump up real quick,' she told lottery officials in a June 3 news release. Spencer hit the jackpot after she tried her luck on The Lamp: Dark Arts. She was drawn to the online game because of its appearance. 'My favorite color is green and the wheel in the game is green,' Spencer said. The Lamp: Dark Arts is a progressive jackpot game that features a prize wheel and digital icons players can match to win big. Spencer, who beat odds of 1 in 32 million, spent $1 on her ticket and scored the second-tier jackpot prize. 'I was pretty surprised,' said Spencer, who kept $113,671 after taxes. 'I didn't expect that.' The lucky winner is from Conover, in Catawba County and a roughly 45-mile drive northwest from Charlotte. She hopes to put her prize money toward bills and donate to cat rescue organizations. It's not the first time a huge prize made someone wake up. Another North Carolina lottery player was drinking his morning coffee when he realized his ticket was going to make him richer, McClatchy News reported in October.

A Stanly County woman bought a $10 scratch-off ticket and won $1 million, N.C. Education Lottery officials announced on Thursday. ALSO READ: Nonprofit founder wins lottery, pledges prize to help Charlotte homeless Martha Ramos Melgar, of Stanfield, bought the 50X The Cash ticket from the Stanfield Express on West Stanly Street. She had two options. She could receive her prize as an annuity of $50,000 over 20 years or a lump sum of $600,000. She chose the lump sum and after taxes, took home $394,500. The 50X The Cash game debuted in February 2024 with six top prizes of $1 million. Melgar won the last top prize, so the lottery will begin to end the game.
