The Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) has taken a firm stand against the release of
Kamal Haasan
's upcoming film 'Thug Life' in the state, following the actor's controversial remark about the Kannada language.
As reported by The New Indian Express, unless Kamal Haasan issues a public apology, the KFCC has declared the film will not be screened across Karnataka.
Controversial remark sparks outrage
The controversy erupted after Kamal Haasan, during the audio launch of 'Thug Life' in Chennai, stated that 'Kannada was born out of Tamil.' This remark was met with swift backlash from pro-Kannada organisations, political leaders, and members of the Kannada film industry, who condemned the statement as historically inaccurate and culturally insensitive.
Reportedly, in response, KFCC President N.M. Narasimhulu made the chamber's stance clear, stating, 'Kamal Haasan is insisting, 'I have not done anything wrong, so I will not apologise.' But if he does not apologise, there is no question of allowing the film to be released.' The controversy has triggered widespread calls for a boycott of Thug Life in Karnataka.
No support for release within the state
According to Narasimhulu, there is no backing for the film's release from any quarter within Karnataka.
'Theatres and distributors have already decided not to screen Thug Life,' he confirmed. He also noted that the resistance to the film's release extends beyond cinema halls, with political leaders and cultural organisations uniting against Haasan's comment.
Even if the actor issues an apology, the KFCC has made it clear that clearance for the film's release will not be immediate, indicating a prolonged stay if the situation is not resolved diplomatically.
Deadline for response set as June 3
Thug Life | Song - Vinveli Nayaga (Lyrical)
Kamal Haasan is currently in Dubai and is expected to return to Chennai by 11 am on June 3. Distributors associated with the Karnataka release have asked for additional time, with a response deadline set for 12 pm on the same day. The final decision regarding the film's fate in Karnataka hinges on the actor's next move.
