KFCC blocks ‘Thug Life' release in Karnataka over Kamal Haasan's Kannada remark
The Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) has taken a firm stand against the release of
Kamal Haasan
's upcoming film 'Thug Life' in the state, following the actor's controversial remark about the Kannada language.
As reported by The New Indian Express, unless Kamal Haasan issues a public apology, the KFCC has declared the film will not be screened across Karnataka.
Controversial remark sparks outrage
The controversy erupted after Kamal Haasan, during the audio launch of 'Thug Life' in Chennai, stated that 'Kannada was born out of Tamil.' This remark was met with swift backlash from pro-Kannada organisations, political leaders, and members of the Kannada film industry, who condemned the statement as historically inaccurate and culturally insensitive.
Reportedly, in response, KFCC President N.M. Narasimhulu made the chamber's stance clear, stating, 'Kamal Haasan is insisting, 'I have not done anything wrong, so I will not apologise.' But if he does not apologise, there is no question of allowing the film to be released.' The controversy has triggered widespread calls for a boycott of Thug Life in Karnataka.
No support for release within the state
According to Narasimhulu, there is no backing for the film's release from any quarter within Karnataka.
'Theatres and distributors have already decided not to screen Thug Life,' he confirmed. He also noted that the resistance to the film's release extends beyond cinema halls, with political leaders and cultural organisations uniting against Haasan's comment.
Even if the actor issues an apology, the KFCC has made it clear that clearance for the film's release will not be immediate, indicating a prolonged stay if the situation is not resolved diplomatically.
Deadline for response set as June 3
Thug Life | Song - Vinveli Nayaga (Lyrical)
Kamal Haasan is currently in Dubai and is expected to return to Chennai by 11 am on June 3. Distributors associated with the Karnataka release have asked for additional time, with a response deadline set for 12 pm on the same day. The final decision regarding the film's fate in Karnataka hinges on the actor's next move.

Raj Kapoor's wife Krishna Kapoor once left actor and their home in anger, took Rishi Kapoor and other kids with her after she found out that...
Veteran actor Raj Kapoor, also known as the showman of Hindi cinema, left no stone unturned in entertaining audiences. While his professional life always gained headlines and appreciation, his personal life remained under public scrutiny. Kapoor was known for his habit of drinking alcohol. However, another major revelation about the actor was made by his son Rishi Kapoor when his autobiography came to limelight. In Rishi's autobiography, Khullam Khulla: Rishi Kapoor Uncensored, he disclosed shocking details about his father and his extra-marital affair. Rishi also mentioned how it affected the family dynamics. On several occasions, Raj Kapoor had been linked to many actresses. Reports claim that Raj and his wife Krishna Kapoor had many heated arguments due to these link-up rumors. However, it was Rishi Kapoor's book that confirmed his father's extra-marital affair with Vyjayanthimala, and Nargis, and revealed how his mother Krishna Kapoor reacted. In his biography, Rishi wrote, 'When I was young, my father's name was in the news for his affairs with many actresses. But the memories of the disputes in the house faded with time. When my mother came to know about his extra-marital affair with Sangam co-star Vyjayanthimala, the matter got worse. There were a lot of fights between mummy and papa. This time, Mother was not ready to step back, and she left the house with me. For some time, we stayed in a hotel, and later we had a flat in Chitrakoot where we started living. When papa realized his mistake, things got sorted out (sic).' Rishi also revealed more about his father's relationship with Vyjayanthimala, which caused multiple disruptions in their family. Raj Kapoor's extra-marital affair with his co-star was not Vyjayanthimala, but Nargis, which often made headlines. However, Raj and Nargis' affair never materialized, and later Nargis married Sunil Dutt.

Thug Life advance booking: Kamal Haasan's film to open with ₹12.46 cr, 2 lakh+ tickets sold despite Karnataka blockage
Thug Life advance booking: Kamal Haasan's film Thug Life is ready to debut on Thursday despite no show across Karnataka. The actor recently found himself at the centre of a controversy, which led to the film being blocked from release in the state. However, the film is set to see a decent opening day. However, missing out on the Karnataka circuit is undoubtedly going to cost Kamal Haasan who is also jointly backing the film. According to film industry tracker Sacnilk, Thug Life has collected a gross of ₹ 5.02 crore from ticket sales in all languages. The film will be out in Tamil, Hindi and Telugu languages. It will also be available in IMAX 2D format. Considering all formats, Kamal Haasan's film has so far sold 2,95,456 tickets for 10,678 shows across India, excluding Karnataka. Considering blocked seats, Thug Life is set to see a massive opening with ₹ 12.46 crore gross earnings. The film is set to clash with Sajid Nadiawala's Housefull 5 which has now generated way less money from advance booking. The movie is likely to premiere with ₹ 5.67 crore gross earnings. While Karnataka is out of the picture for Thug Life, states like Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra, followed by Gujarat, top the list with maximum revenue from the advance booking for the first day in all versions. Thug Life is a gangster action drama film, directed by Mani Ratnam. It is co-written by Kamal Haasan, who is also jointly producing the film under his banner Raaj Kamal Films International. Madras Talkies and Red Giant Movies are also backing the film. Besides Kamal Haasan, it also features Silambarasan, Trisha Krishnan, Abhirami, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Ashok Selvan, Joju George, Nassar, Ali Fazal, Rohit Saraf and Baburaj. The film marks the reunion of Haasan and Ratnam after they collaborated on their 1987 film, Nayakan. The film landed in controversy after Haasan said, "Kannada was born out of Tamil' during the film event. Predicting the fate of the film amid the row, film trade insider Ramesh Bala posted on X, formerly Twitter, 'The anticipation is huge for the biggest film of the year #ThugLife. The promotional material impressed everyone. We can expect, solid action and Phenomenal performances from leads #KamalHaasan, #SilambarasanTR, #Trisha, #JojuGeorge & others. With themes rumored to explore action, identity, and rebellion, #ThugLife is expected to be more than just a commercial entertainer. Excited for tomorrow.'
