Richard Torrez maintains undefeated streak with unanimous decision win in Las Vegas

This time there are no knockouts for Tulare's Richard Torrez. But his undefeated streak continues after an unanimous decision win over a taller Guido Vianello in a 10-round heavyweight main event in Las Vegas on Saturday night, capturing the NABF, NABO and IBF North American titles at the Pearl Concert Theater at Palms Casino Resort. 'I was trying to set up my feints and my body shots,' Torrez said. 'Then, my body shots started landing more and more. From there, other shots started landing like my hooks. That was the plan that we had.' The judges ruled the fight 98-91 2x and 97-92. According to Compubox, the 6-foot-2 Torrez (13-0, 11 KOs) jumped out to a 23-14 lead in punches landed. Vianello (13-3-1, 11 KOs) had been penalized a point in the second round for excessive holding. Vianello, listed at 6-6, had a 46-33 advantage over rounds four through seven. Torrez connected on a counter left hook, stunning Vianello in the last minute of the eighth round. Torrez landed 40% of his power punches while Vianello connected on 31%. It's not known when Torrez will fight again but he's ready for any opponent that comes his way. 'I don't say no to fights,' he said. 'I want that to be clear. I want that to be known. Whoever you guys give me, I'm going to say yes to.'

Low birth rate's far-reaching impact: Sustainability of teacher pensions under threat

The impact of South Korea's demographic crisis is far-reaching, with one lesser-known consequence being the threat to the sustainability of the teachers' pension system. As the school-age population shrinks and schools close, teachers are losing their jobs and becoming legally eligible for pension payouts much earlier than expected — sometimes as early as their 30s. According to data released by the National Assembly Budget Office, 410 pension recipients became eligible prematurely due to school closures as of 2024. Among them, individuals in their 30s and 40s account for 16 percent. It was the first time that the number of early recipients surpassed 400 since the pension program was introduced in 1975 as a mandatory scheme providing financial security for private school teachers and staff in Korea. Of the 410, recipients in their 60s and older comprised the largest share with 196, followed by 149 in their 50s. The remaining 65 recipients were younger — 63 in their 40s and two in their 30s. "The financial sustainability of the Teachers' Pension fund is already in question, and early pension payouts due to school closures will further strain future finances," a NABO official said. Statistics Korea projections indicate the number of children ages 6 to 21 will decrease further from 6.97 million in 2025 to about 4.1 million by the early 2040s. After a slight rebound in the early 2050s, the decline will continue. The NABO financial outlook warned that without systemic changes, the teachers' pension fund will run a deficit by 2028 and be depleted by 2042.

Edgar Berlanga misses weight for first fight since Canelo Alvarez loss: 'Damn, man — I can't do it'

Edgar Berlanga is 1.6 pounds over the championship limit for his comeback fight. Berlanga tipped the scales at 169.6 pounds in his first attempt at Friday's weigh-in ahead of his WBO NABO super middleweight title bout with Jonathon Gonzalez-Ortiz. Gonzalez-Ortiz successfully made the 168-pound maximum, weighing in at 167.4 pounds. "People don't know, right, but I had the flu," Berlanga said to FightHype about missing weight. "I was struggling with my health, and I knew that at a certain point, I was like, 'Damn, man — I can't do it.'" Berlanga vs. Gonzalez-Ortiz will still go ahead on Saturday night at the Caribe Royale in Orlando, Florida, but Berlanga will be ineligible to win the title. Should he emerge victorious, the belt will become vacant. Berlanga vs. Gonzalez-Ortiz is the co-feature of a DAZN-streamed fight card headlined by the Austin "Ammo" Williams (17-1, 12 KOs) vs. Patrice Volny (19-1, 13 KOs) middleweight contest. Elsewhere on the show, 2024 Olympic bronze medalist Omari Jones makes his professional debut at welterweight against Alessio Mastronunzio (14-5, 4 KOs), and Jamaine Ortiz (18-2-1, 9 KOs) faces Yomar Alamo (22-3-1, 13 KOs) in a super lightweight bout. Berlanga (22-1, 17 KOs) was last in action this past September when he challenged Saul "Canelo" Alvarez for the WBA, WBC and WBO super middleweight titles. Berlanga extended Alvarez the 12-round distance at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas but ultimately lost a lopsided decision on the scorecards. Saturday's bout represents Berlanga's final fight as part of his contract with Eddie Hearn's Matchroom Boxing on Saturday. He will then enter free agency in the summer, likely targeting big fights with Caleb Plant, Jermall Charlo and Jaime Munguia. Berlanga has expressed his disappointment at being on the undercard of a relatively smaller show coming off a fight with the sport's biggest star, Alvarez. He blames Hearn's Matchroom for what he has described as a "disrespectful" move. Gonzalez-Ortiz (20-0-1, 16 KOs) had two fights in 2024, a pair of knockouts over Jose Saint-Hilaire Gil and Edward Ulloa Diaz, which ended a 10-year hiatus from the sport. Gonzalez-Ortiz, 35, represented Puerto Rico at the 2008 Olympics. He fought to a draw with former super welterweight world champion Serhiy Dzinziruk in 2012 and has a win over Derek Ennis — the brother of IBF welterweight champion Jaron "Boots" Ennis. Ten years on and two weight divisions up, it is no surprise that he is such a big underdog (+950 per BetMGM) against Berlanga.
