Denny Hamlin talks NASCAR lawsuit developments, back-to-back DNFs

Denny Hamlin's focus is clear, figure out a way to get his season back on track after back-to-back DNFs while also monitoring the progress of an antitrust lawsuit filed by 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports against NASCAR. On May 9 the Associated Press reported a three-judge federal appellate panel indicated it might overturn an injunction that allows 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports to race as chartered teams while the lawsuit is pending. NBA legend Michael Jordan and Hamlin are co-owners of 23XI Racing. Advertisement When asked for his interpretation of the development with the appellate judges, Hamlin said, "It's so hard to say. Obviously, we had an injunction that allowed us to remain a chartered team while the lawsuit is going on. Judges had a lot of questions, which typically, appeals judges do ask a lot of questions. Until they make a ruling it's just to hard to speculate." HOW TO BUY CRACKER BARREL 400 TICKETS Hamlin, 44, did not attend the hearing, but said he stays informed about the lawsuit while competing in his 20th NASCAR Cup Season. "I do my best, I'm updated on it; I talk to the attorneys daily, weekly about the updates," Hamlin said. "We're obviously going through the discovery process right now. We've got a trial set for December, which we're very much looking forward to." Advertisement The two teams filed the lawsuit against the governing race body on Oct. 2, 2024 in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of North Carolina. It accuses NASCAR of pressuring teams into long-term charter agreements. 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports were the only charter-holding teams to reject the new agreement. A reversal of the injunction would take away the starting spots 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports have guaranteed. Without a charter status the teams would have to compete as open entries without being assured of race-day positions. "It allows me to focus on my job, which is doing the best I can to drive the 11 car and run 23XI Racing. That's what I've been doing and it's worked well. Obviously, the results show that." Hamlin wins back-to-back on the track The positive results were certainly there early in the season. For the first time since 2012 Hamlin won back-to-back races (Martinsville and Darlington) and followed that up with a second-place finish at Bristol. He also had a second-place finish at Phoenix. And he will be racing at Nashville Superspeedway on June 1 in the Cracker Barrel 400. Advertisement However, Hamlin got blocked by Ross Chastain at Talladega three weeks ago and finished 21st. It only got worse after that when Hamlin's Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota burst into flames near the end of Stage 1 at Texas and then a clutch issue ended his day at Kansas on May 11. "I only can control what I can control and when you have two consecutive DNFs that puts a hamper on that," Hamlin said. "I can only live week-to-week and focus on winning the next race, which is seven days down the line." Reach Mike Organ at 615-259-8021 or on X @MikeOrganWriter. NASCAR Darlington results: Denny Hamlin is winner, plus full leaderboard

The checkered flag is out for the NASCAR Cup Series at Darlington Raceway. Denny Hamlin won Sunday's Goodyear 400 at Darlington to earn his second consecutive victory coming off last week's win in Martinsville. Advertisement Hamlin took two tires on the final pit stop to take the lead going into overtime and held off the field for his fifth win at Darlington. This is Hamlin's 56th career victory, moving to 11th all-time and breaking a tie with Rusty Wallace. William Byron swept the first two stages, leading all 185 laps in those stages and became the second driver since stage racing began in 2017 to lead each lap of the first two stages. Chase Elliott was the first to do so in the 2022 Martinsville race. Byron led 243 laps but a late green flag pit stop left Byron behind, he finished second. NASCAR Darlington winners and losers: William Byron dominates, comes up 1 spot short

Denny Hamlin was the fortunate driver in a late-race pit stop sequence and went back-to-back on Sunday. Hamlin was the first off of pit road ahead of a green-white-checkered restart, then pulled away in the final two laps to win the Goodyear 400 NASCAR Cup Series race at Darlington Raceway. Hamlin was the fortunate one in a turn of bad luck for William Byron (who led 243 of 297 laps) and Ryan Blaney (who took the lead with four laps to go and was on his way to victory before the final caution). Hamlin won last week in Martinsville via a dominant final 200 laps, but Sunday's victory was earned in a much different manner. Byron finished in second, with Christopher Bell in third. Here are the winners and losers from Sunday's NASCAR Cup Series race at Darlington: RACE RESULTS: NASCAR Darlington results: Denny Hamlin is winner, plus full leaderboard Byron will feel hard done by a second-place finish on Sunday, but it was a good result overall after getting the wrong end of the final green-flag pit cycle. Byron was The Show on Sunday, leading the first 243 laps before falling behind Tyler Reddick and Christopher Bell after staying out too long on older tires. But after the late-race caution, Byron moved up to second on the green-white-checkered finish. Byron was not satisfied with the finish in his postrace interview with FOX, but the No. 24 team will take that exact performance again in September when the playoffs open with the Southern 500 at Darlington. This space has been very critical of Ty Gibbs' recent slump, but Sunday's race had to be a pleasantly calm and positive day for the No. 54 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota team. Gibbs struggled like most of the Toyotas during a very long run to end Stage 1, then used strategy and a timely caution to improve track position in Stage 2. While others who did the same fell out of the top 10, Gibbs continued on before finishing 9th. It's Gibbs' first top-10 finish since Sept. 2024 at Kansas. It's going to be a long road toward making the playoffs without a victory for Gibbs, but piling up finishes like Sunday's top-10 will help. Larson is a former Darlington winner whose race on Sunday all but ended on Lap 4, when he lost control of the No. 5 Chevrolet coming off of turn 2 and spun down the backstretch. Larson's Chevrolet bounced off of the inside retaining wall, suffering major damage to the front end. Larson's team worked on the car enough to get him back out by the end of Stage 2, 160 laps down. But it was a surprisingly quick end for one of the pre-race favorites. To make things worse, Larson made an unfortunate impact on the final result with a spin with four laps to go after contact with Bubba Wallace just after Tyler Reddick lost the lead to Ryan Blaney. The subsequent pit stop sequence and restart assisted Denny Hamlin in his victory. "There's two people I love right now — my pit crew and Kyle Larson," Hamlin said on FOX postrace. Keselowski won here last year, earned points in Stage 1 and was running in the top 10 before a Stage 2 pit cycle gone awry. Keselowski lost a right-rear wheel nut shortly after leaving pit road, and spun on the apron. NASCAR didn't throw a caution until after he had lost three laps and was back outside the top 30 in the running order. Keselowski finished 33rd, two laps down. The No. 6 RFK Racing team needed a good day at a track in which it has had a lot of success, but that didn't happen. Keselowski remains without a top-10 finish in 2025. Teammates Chris Buescher and Ryan Preece have a combined eight. 2025 NASCAR race winner Josh Berry crashes in Darlington race

After making contact with Tyler Reddick, Josh Berry lost control on turn 2 of the NASCAR Darlington race on Sunday and and crashed on lap 195. The contact with the right rear of Reddick's car came on the outside wall and sent Berry in the the No. 21 Wood Brothers Racing Mustang spinning across the track and into the inside wall in the Goodyear 400 at Darlington Raceway. It brought out the seventh caution flag of the 293-lap race. Berry, who had been in the top 10 for most of the race, was in sixth place at the time and Reddick was in fifth. Berry was not clear to pass Reddick when contact was made. Berry admitted he ran out of room. William Byron was in the lead heading into the caution and barely held off Christopher Bell on the restart. Reach Mike Organ at 615-259-8021 or on X @MikeOrganWriter.
