Helio Castroneves wrecks in NASCAR Duels, will take provisional for Daytona 500
Helio Castroneves is out of his NASCAR Daytona duel, but he will have a spot in the Daytona 500. Castroneves, making his first NASCAR appearance and driving for Trackhouse Racing, was running seventh in Thursday's qualifying race when he got caught up in another driver's wreck. Chandler Smith was running third when he tried to clear Justin Haley going into turn 1. However, Smith did not have enough space and hit Haley's front bumper and spun out head first into the outside retaining wall. Castroneves was behind Ty Gibbs, who quickly avoided Smith's car but clipped Castroneves in the corner. Castroneves had damage to the right side and was working to get his No. 91 Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet back to the pit lane when he lost control on the apron and spun up into the outside wall, ending his race. Bubba Wallace, Tyler Reddick, Michael McDowell and JJ Yeley also sustained damage in the crash. Castroneves is in the Daytona 500 field automatically with an Open Expansion Provisional (OEP) for world class drivers. Castroneves is a four-time winner of the Indianapolis 500 and three-time winner of the Rolex 24 at Daytona. While Castroneves will be able to run in the Daytona 500, he will not receive prize money for the race.
