Tahaad Pettiford Has Unexpected Answer For Best Player in NBA Question
The NBA is awaiting the next wave of stars as the 2025 NBA Draft is coming up in late June. Already, the Dallas Mavericks shocked the world when they were awarded the No. 1 overall pick. The San Antonio Spurs and Philadelphia 76ers follow Dallas, as the worst three teams last season all fell out of the top three. Advertisement Some of the top players in college hoops were asked on who the best player in the NBA is as they prepare to enter the same stage. Auburn Tigers guard Tahaad Pettiford revealed a shocking answer to the best player in the NBA currently, saying that James Harden is his No. 1 because "he's unstoppable." Auburn Tigers guard Tahaad Pettiford (0).© Maria Lysaker-Imagn Images Expected answers from Florida Gators' Walter Clayton Jr., Duke Blue Devils and likely No. 1 pick Cooper Flagg, and Rutgers' Ace Bailey all said Nikola Jokic was the best player in the NBA, while Bailey said that to him it's Kevin Durant. Harden is an interesting one for Pettiford to make, but maybe has something to do with the fact that they are both left-handed shooters. Advertisement To further this point, Pettiford and Harden in college shared incredibly similar shooting stats. Harden edges out Pettiford expectedly, but only by one percent in 3-point percentage (37.6% to 36.6%), while Pettiford gets the five percent edge on the free-throw line (80.4% to 75.5%). Since entering the NBA in 2009, the No. 3 overall pick has been named an NBA All Star 11 times, earning one MVP, seven All-NBA selections, and a three-time scoring champion. While it may be a stretch to currently call him the best player in the NBA, he is certainly one of the most prolific scorers. After losing to the Nuggets in seven games in the first round, Harden looks ahead to next year, and who knows, maybe Pettiford will get drafted and play alongside his 'best player in the NBA.' Celebrity chef's cafes close on Union Square
SAN FRANCISCO - Celebrity chef Tyler Florence has pulled out of two cafés on San Francisco's Union Square. The city confirmed that Miller & Lux closed on Union Square, now the city is looking to see who can fill those voids. Workers made trips in and out of the Miller & Lux bakery on the southwest corner of Union Square removing items from the now closed café. The Miller & Lux Provisions location across the square has a sign in the window that it's temporarily closed for repairs and renovations. It's now clear neither location will reopen. San Francisco's Recreation and Parks Department released a statement reading in part: "Miller & Lux stepped into the space with a pop-up during a critical time for the area, bringing energy and great food when it was needed most. While they've made the decision to move on, we're grateful for their time here and optimistic about the future of these café spaces." Tyler Florence opened the stores in 2023, at the time saying he'd signed a three-year lease, and wanted to be a part of the neighborhood's economic recovery. "We're all in this together to do what we can to bring San Francisco back," said Florence in November 2023. Former President of the Board of Supervisors Aaron Peskin said he worried about the deal with the Department of Recreation and Parks and the mayor's Office of Economic and Workforce Development as it was being made; saying a $440,000 grant to improve the area was intended to fill vacant businesses on Powell Street between Geary and Market. Now he said he hopes the city takes a valuable lesson from the closure of the celebrity chef's Union Square locations. "I hope that the mayor really holds Rec and Parks and the Office of Economic and Workforce Development accountable and asks tough questions and gets real answers and structure future leases in such a way that folks like Tyler Florence will be held accountable," said Peskin. The OEWD said it oversaw the $440,000 grant to expedite the opening of Florence's restaurant locations on Union Square, which were open in time for the 2023 holiday shopping season. The OEWD said Florence's Miller & Lux locations helped boost business in the area, and that a $2 million grant from the state for improvements to the café spaces will continue, and those spaces will be ready for the next tenant. Local bakery b. patisserie stepped in over the Chinese New Year and NBA All Star weekend. The Union Square Alliance thanked Florence for stepping in at a critical time, but is already preparing for the next tenant to fill these locations. "b. patisserie came in and enjoyed the wave of NBA All Star week," said Marisa Rodriguez from the Union Square Alliance. "So we're going to keep that energy moving and keep the location just as hot as it's ever been. So, we're excited." The Recreation and Parks Department has said the b. patisserie pop-up over the All Star weekend was a success, and they're looking forward to working with them on a longer-term deal.

Cade Cunningham makes his mark for Pistons with All-Star debut
The camcorder was in Cade Cunningham's hand before he and Ausar Thompson even boarded their flight from Chicago. The duo had just helped lead the Detroit Pistons to two wins over the Chicago Bulls and were on their way to San Francisco for their first All-Star weekend. As Cunningham walked from the bus to the private plane awaiting him and Thompson, he couldn't help but smile. It was a stark contrast from the quiet plane rides last year he spoke to The Athletic about earlier this season. Advertisement The flight time from Chicago to San Francisco is roughly five hours. So when did it hit him that he was officially an All-Star? 'I think really just touching down and being like, 'I'm here.'' Cunningham said. 'I'm here for the big game. I think that was the first moment it kind of settled in for me.' Cunningham's weekend was a culmination of his work dating to his childhood in Arlington, Texas. But the weekend especially validated him after his introduction to the league. In the first three seasons of his NBA career, he'd won a combined 54 games. This season alone he's led the Pistons to 29. Ausar & Cade have arrived in The Bay📍#DetroitBasketball x @NBAAllStar — Detroit Pistons (@DetroitPistons) February 14, 2025 Gone are the days of Detroit being an easy win, thanks in part to Cunningham. He's spearheaded the Pistons' return to relevance, and his time at All-Star weekend stamped him as one of the league's elite talents. Cunningham's selection makes him the first Pistons player in the All-Star game since Blake Griffin in 2019 and the first Detroit guard since Allen Iverson in 2009. Cunningham was 7 years old when Iverson made his appearance. He embraced making history for Detroit ahead of his debut. 'It feels great to play for the Pistons. Obviously, we have a super passionate fan base,' Cunningham said. 'That definitely plays into the commitment to the organization and city, the amount of love they give back to you. All of it plays a huge role in why I'm so passionate about the Pistons, the city and the organization. It's fun and I'm glad I get to represent them.' LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Draymond Green had all publicly advocated for Cunningham's All-Star bid leading up to the weekend, and all were in attendance when Cunningham made his debut. Cunningham didn't get to share the floor with Durant because of the new All-Star format, and James because of his last-minute withdrawal with an injury. GO DEEPER Cade Cunningham says Kevin Durant's praise of his game 'validates my work' The weekend started for Cunningham on Friday night, when he took his seat courtside to support Thompson, who was playing alongside his brother, Amen, in the Rising Stars game as Cunningham made his way to the hardwood as a spectator. 'I heard 'Something, something, A.T.' I turned to my right and he had some purple on, didn't he?' Thompson said postgame of hearing Cunningham. 'I saw some purple with the (camcorder) and laughed. It was super cool but it was weird, I'm not going to lie. But it was super cool, I'm happy he came out to support.' Advertisement Next on the agenda for Cunningham was the All-Star practice in Oakland on Saturday morning. The teams installed a few plays and allowed players to mingle among themselves and with fans. Cunningham did media with multiple outlets, then made time for local Detroit writers. Speaking with Cunningham, it was obvious he was thrilled to be in San Francisco. But he wasn't satisfied. 'It's cool, man. This is what I planned on, though,' Cunningham said from a hall in the Oakland Arena. 'This is what I saw for myself. To be in this position now is a great feeling, but there's definitely more steps to climb. I'm looking forward to the rest of the season and all the things to come.' In the evening, Cunningham laced up his custom Nike G.T. Cut 3s for the 3-point contest. When he was initially announced as a participant, it likely came as a surprise to Pistons fans given the way Malik Beasley has been shooting the ball. Cunningham said Beasley made sure to give him some pointers ahead of time. Cunningham finished with 16 points but was eliminated shortly after when Jalen Brunson made 18. First All-Star Saturday night in the books for Cade — Detroit Pistons (@DetroitPistons) February 16, 2025 'I caught my rhythm too late,' Cunningham said. 'The first two racks, it felt like they were all missing a little bit off. But it was a lot of fun to do it. I'm glad I got to experience it for the first time.' When asked if Beasley's advice helped, he said, 'Yeah, but I don't think I applied it too well.' The main event came Sunday when Cunningham heard his name announced as an All-Star for the first time. The first year of the new format with three teams of All-Stars and the Rising Stars making it to Sunday was a work in progress, to say the least. But regardless, Cunningham had his moment against Charles Barkley's Global Stars team. He knocked down his first 3-point attempt and punched home a one-handed dunk with Victor Wembanyama lurking behind him. Due to the format, Cunningham's time on the floor during the All-Star game was short-lived, but he'll still have core memories from his weekend. THROW IT DOWN CADE 👀#NBAAllStar — Detroit Pistons (@DetroitPistons) February 17, 2025 'Mainly just (being) with the OG All-Stars, I'd say them. Just being able to enjoy the All-Star experience with them and be on the court. To be a part of that group is amazing.'

Tyler Herro's NBA All-Star recap: A ‘great experience all weekend just to be here'
Tyler Herro's first career NBA All-Star appearance is officially in the books and proved to be a rousing success as he enjoyed being the 11th player in Miami Heat history to enjoy an All-Star nod. He's the first Heat guard to do so since Dwyane Wade during the 2018-19 season. The weekend-long celebration of the league's brightest stars continued a breakout season for the 25-year-old Herro. Career-best statistics earned his spot in the game, but his playing style, scoring savvy and personal excitement made each moment special. He was able to autograph the first-ever editions of his All-Star jersey, be initiated with dap by his All-Star peers and, most importantly, enjoy nearly every moment of the week with his family by his side. It's the 'go dada' for us 🥹 #NBAAllStar — Miami HEAT (@MiamiHEAT) February 15, 2025 The start of many memorable moments for @raf_tyler — Miami HEAT (@MiamiHEAT) February 15, 2025 Herro weekend starts now 🔥 #NBAAllStar — Miami HEAT (@MiamiHEAT) February 15, 2025 After years of productive seasons shortened because of injury and seeing his name in trade rumors, Herro basking in the light of All-Star recognition has been one of the season's best stories. His teammates and coaches routinely praise how hard he's worked on his game, durability and confidence as a leader, which has resulted into him growing as a voice for Heat basketball. Advertisement Nobody who has seen Herro's game or is aware of his confidence is surprised by his new career arc, but it doesn't make it any less enjoyable to witness. Before Herro officially made the All-Star cut as a coaches' selection, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra considered that as one of the ultimate signs of respect. Opposing coaches like the Oklahoma City Thunder's Mike Daigenult, the Indiana Pacers' Rick Carlisle and the Utah Jazz's Will Hardy are a few examples of strategizing eyes who, throughout the season, have lauded how Herro has reached this point of his still-young career. Ahead of Sunday's All-Star Game Tournament, LeBron James, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Karl-Anthony Towns welcomed Herro as Miami's leading scorer continued taking in more of the moment. Lebron James dapping up the 3PT champion Tyler Herro. Greatness recognizes greatness. — 𝙃𝙚𝙖𝙩𝘾𝙪𝙡𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 (@WadexFlash) February 17, 2025 Let's do a recap of the most notable moments from Herro's first experience as an NBA All-Star. One of the more underrated elements of NBA All-Star Weekend is when players sit down for their individual media availability. It's a chance for some of the league's first-time All-Stars to make themselves more visible by answering questions they'd normally not be asked. In Miami's case, players are usually locked in on game preparation or postgame reaction, so it was refreshing to see Herro have fun with the national media. A quick rundown of some of the topics he addressed: As Herro's media session continued, he was asked how the Bay Area would enjoy Jimmy Butler, who was traded to the Golden State Warriors on Feb. 5. Herro and Butler spent five-plus seasons together, which included two NBA Finals berths, three appearances in the Eastern Conference finals and some of the most electric on-court moments in Heat history. Advertisement Despite Butler's dramatic departure from Miami, Herro expressed fond thoughts about his former teammate. 'Jimmy's a great leader. He leads by example,' he told the media Saturday. 'He puts his hard hat on and gets to work. He's a winner. He wants to win, so I'm sure the fans out here in Oakland and San Francisco will definitely love him, and we'll miss him down in Miami.' Another bright spot to Herro's Saturday afternoon was practicing with his All-Star teammates. Under the league's new All-Star format, players were divided into three teams of eight, so Herro was placed on Kenny Smith's Young Stars roster alongside Anthony Edwards, Jalen Brunson, Evan Mobley, Darius Garland, Cade Cunningham and Jalen Williams. Players got up some shots and handed shirts out to fans as they enjoyed the vibes. Herro almost certainly used the practice session as a warmup for adding to his trophy case a few hours later. Buddy Hield, who faced Herro and Darius Garland in the finals, tallied 31 points to tie Steph Curry (2021) for the highest-scoring round in the contest's history. From Herro officially donning his All-Star jersey to realizing the company he was in, he — and Adebayo, of course — embraced every second of what marked arguably the most important individual celebration of his NBA career. The new rules require teams to play until one team scores 40 points. Kenny Smith's Young Stars lost to Charles Barkley's Global Stars 41-32, so there were only so many buckets to go around. Herro finished with six points on 2-of-4 shooting but was ready to contribute more under different circumstances. Tyler with a pair of triples in his #NBAAllStar Game debut ⭐️ — Miami HEAT (@MiamiHEAT) February 17, 2025 For much of Sunday's game, there were complaints about the new format, which greatly limited scoring opportunities. It also marked the first time players from the Rising Stars game played during All-Star Sunday as the league continues to seek ways to heighten competition. It remains to be seen if this format sticks or what the league might consider in the future, but Herro remained appreciative of the opportunity to enjoy simply being recognized as an All-Star. Advertisement He'll take a few days to recharge before Miami (25-28) continues its season with the hopes of making a second-half push to the postseason. 'It was my first experience, so it is what it is. It was a short, quick burst,' Herro said after the game. 'I feel like I still would like the East-West format better. I broke not even a half-sweat, but it was a great experience all weekend just to be here, from Friday to Sunday night. Just super grateful to be here.'

NBA All-Star 2025: Stephen Curry makes spectacular backward, no-look half-court shot at practice
NBA All-Star weekend is supposed to be fun, right? Stephen Curry reminded fans at his former home arena of Oakland's Oracle Arena during practice and media availability on Saturday, swishing a shot that many of us would try but not even come close to making. While goofing around, Curry hit a no-look backward shot from half-court. Of course, the Golden State Warriors superstar made it look easy too. And right after former teammate Kevin Durant airballed his attempt of the same shot. Curry's jubilant skip around the court after hitting the fancy trick shot added to the joy of the moment. This man is enjoying his basketball life. Backwards? One-handed? From halfcourt? Not a problem for @StephenCurry30 🍳 — NBA (@NBA) February 15, 2025 A slightly wider look of the shot shows Damian Lillard attempting to look unimpressed. Maybe he knew he wouldn't make that circus play. Or perhaps he was focused on Saturday's 3-Point Contest and winning for the third consecutive year. — The Best Never Rest (@ February 15, 2025 at 3:41 PMSTEPH JUST KNOCKED DOWN A NO-LOOK BACKWARDS SHOT FROM HALFCOURT 🤯🔥HOW?! 😭#NBA #Curry #LebronJames #StephCurry #NBAAllStar #AllStar[image or embed] Curry, 36, isn't participating in the contest which he's won twice. Nor will he compete against New York Liberty star Sabrina Ionescu in a rematch of their 3-point shootout from last year's All-Star weekend. Yet as the NBA is looking for more exciting events to boost All-Star festivities, maybe Curry's dazzling shot reminded the league that bringing back the H-O-R-S-E competition would be fun. Or would Curry just win a H-O-R-S-E contest every year? He'd probably do so even after retiring as an active player. A H-O-R-S-E competition was once part of NBA All-Star weekend, but for only two years. Durant won both of those contests. Yet it hasn't been part of the festivities since 2010. (Curry was a rookie that season.) NBA players did participate in a virtual H-O-R-S-E contest during 2020 while in quarantine at their homes. Mike Conley Jr. beat Zach LaVine in that challenge, which raised $200,000 for charity.
