Kyle Shanahan: I understood why we struggled last year, I won't understand it this year

San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan attributes some of his team's struggles last season to coming off a loss in the Super Bowl. Which means that explanation won't fly this year. Shanahan said that a year ago, his players were worn down from a full postseason that ended with a heartbreaking overtime loss in Super Bowl LVIII. But this year, his players had a full offseason after going 6-11 and missing the playoffs, and he's not going to accept anyone not being completely read to go. 'The way I addressed it the most, was at our last meeting in January,' Shanahan said, via 'I just told the guys, I talked about how the season ended the year before, and how when I felt them all come back. I felt guys weren't ready to come back and I understood that. But I told them how I really won't understand it this year, not that that was right or wrong, but I couldn't comprehend it. We're off five weeks earlier, we all know how disappointed we are. And a lot of us have played a lot of football here.' Shanahan's 49ers have lost the Super Bowl twice, and both years they followed that with a six-win season. After their 6-10 season in 2020, they bounced back and made the NFC Championship Game following the 2021 season. Returning to winning form is the kind of response he expects from his players this year as well.

Report: 49ers, D.J. Humphries did not finalize contract terms

The agents for offensive tackle D.J. Humphries said in late April that their client had agreed to terms on a contract with the 49ers, but that was never followed by a formal announcement of his signing and it doesn't look like one is coming. Matt Maiocco of reports that, despite the announcement, Humphries and the 49ers did not finalize any terms of a deal. He adds that no agreement appears to be imminent. Humphries tore his ACL in 2023 and missed most of 2024 before joining the Chiefs. He injured his hamstring in his first game for Kansas City and returned to appear in one more game before his contract with the team was up. The 49ers have since announced the signings of Andre Dillard and Nicholas Petit-Frere. Trent Williams and Colton McKivitz return from last season.

49ers say Brandon Aiyuk has "a chance" to play in Week 1 as he rehabs from ACL surgery

The 49ers confirmed this week that they plan to keep wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk on the roster for 2025. Now the question is whether Aiyuk will be healthy enough to play in 2025. Aiyuk is rehabbing from knee surgery for a torn ACL and MCL, and after his most recent medical checkup it's possible but not certain he'll be good to go for Week One, according to 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan. 'I don't know,' Shanahan said, via 'It's too early to tell. The goal is always early. You hope to have him right away. We were told by his doctor there's a chance. But it's too early in the process and we'll see when we get closer to training camp and see what it looks like.' Aiyuk suffered the injury on October 20 and had his surgery three weeks later. Being back for Week One would mean a recovery time of about 10 months, which is in line with the normal range for ACL recoveries.
