Kyle Shanahan: I understood why we struggled last year, I won't understand it this year
San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan attributes some of his team's struggles last season to coming off a loss in the Super Bowl. Which means that explanation won't fly this year.
Shanahan said that a year ago, his players were worn down from a full postseason that ended with a heartbreaking overtime loss in Super Bowl LVIII. But this year, his players had a full offseason after going 6-11 and missing the playoffs, and he's not going to accept anyone not being completely read to go.
'The way I addressed it the most, was at our last meeting in January,' Shanahan said, via NBCSportsBayArea.com. 'I just told the guys, I talked about how the season ended the year before, and how when I felt them all come back. I felt guys weren't ready to come back and I understood that. But I told them how I really won't understand it this year, not that that was right or wrong, but I couldn't comprehend it. We're off five weeks earlier, we all know how disappointed we are. And a lot of us have played a lot of football here.'
Shanahan's 49ers have lost the Super Bowl twice, and both years they followed that with a six-win season. After their 6-10 season in 2020, they bounced back and made the NFC Championship Game following the 2021 season. Returning to winning form is the kind of response he expects from his players this year as well.

"There are people in that locker room who I believe would tell you they're already over this entire thing," Pelissero said. "They just wanna know what's going on. And they're sick of hearing about it, and they're sick of asking about it. They don't wanna discuss it anymore." Pelissero continued on to talk about how rare this kind of situation actually is, and that scenario was also connected indirectly to Rodgers. "I can't think of another situation like this since probably the guy who preceded Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay when Brett Favre took it all the way to August 18th with the Vikings and then showed up," Pelissero said. Pittsburgh has remained patient with Rodgers. Bringing him onboard would make the Steelers a legitimate Super Bowl contender. While people are getting frustrated, the reasoning behind the team waiting makes perfect sense. At that point, the veteran quarterback should be in town if he's going to play for the team in 2025. Missing OTAs was a disappointment for the fans and players. Odell Beckham Jr. was a sensational player for the New York Giants and was on a path to becoming an all-time great statistically before injuries hindered the journey. Beckham did create controversy when he was with the Giants. He simulated urinating in the end zone against the Philadelphia Eagles, had a meltdown with the kicking net on the sidelines of a game and got into a bitter war with then-Carolina Panthers cornerback Josh Norman. The Giants traded Beckham to the Cleveland Browns before the 2019 season. He later won a Super Bowl with the Los Angeles Rams and spent time with the Baltimore Ravens and Miami Dolphins. He appeared on CBS Sports' coverage of the UEFA Champions League final on Saturday and made clear he didn't want to leave the Giants. "I never, ever wanted to leave the New York Giants," he said. "The reason you heard me talking about what was going on was because I was p----- because, where I come from in college, if we lost one game, our season was over. "This was the organization I got drafted to. They believed in me. So if the Giants went and won a Super Bowl, I would be happy. But deep down inside, I wanted to be the one. No question. So it's definitely you'll always hold that. But then someone like me, I went to the LA Rams, won a Super Bowl. But still, you just want that." Beckham had 390 catches for 5,476 yards and 44 touchdowns in five seasons with the Giants. He was a Pro Bowler in three of those five years and was the Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2014 despite only playing 12 games. Jerry Rice had 346 catches for 6,364 yards and 66 touchdowns in his first five seasons with the San Francisco 49ers. He was an All-Pro in four of those five seasons and only missed four games in the 1987 season. Beckham's future is unclear. He parted ways with the Dolphins in the offseason. 49ers rookie LB has already impressed Fred Warner in limited time together at OTAs San Francisco 49ers linebacker Fred Warner is one of the best in the league at what he does, and that's earned him All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors four times in his seven years since the team took him in the third round (No. 70 overall) of the 2018 NFL draft out of BYU. His performance earned him a three-year, $63 million extension with San Francisco this offseason, making him the highest-paid linebacker in NFL history. With that, it's not easy to impress Warner, but rookie linebacker Nick Martin has done just that in the early parts of the 49ers' offseason program. "I've loved everything that Nick's been about since he's arrived," Warner said during a recent media availability. "I heard the whole story about how he said he had my jersey before coming on the team... He's come in and he's asked me every single question known to man, like 'Fred, how are you doing this? What are you doing after practice? What are you doing after lift?' [He] wants to be a part of those things, and [he's not] afraid to ask those questions. "I've seen the athletic ability flash already on the field in the way that he closes space really quickly. He already has the great mindset of wanting to learn, so I'm really happy with where he's at." Martin, 22, was a three-star recruit out of Pleasant Grove High School in Texarkana, Texas, before committing to Oklahoma State for the 2021 season. With the Cowboys, he appeared in 35 games over four years, recording 203 tackles (24 for a loss), seven sacks, two interceptions, two forced fumbles and two fumbles recovered. He also earned All-Big 12 honors in 2023. San Francisco selected him in the third round (no. 75 overall) of this year's draft to not only help make up for Dre Greenlaw's departure, but also to fill in for Warner as the team's defensive signal caller, if necessary. Martin is projected to start his rookie year as a starter alongside Warner, and he's already started to prove himself to a player that he clearly grew up admiring on his journey to the pros.
