Virgin Media fibre upgrade reaches 550,000 homes

Virgin Media has announced that its fibre broadband upgrade programme has now reached more than 550,000 homes. The company said it is on target to reach 1 million premises upgraded to fibre in 2026. Virgin has also announced the launch of a new 5 gigabit fibre broadband service. "This fibre milestone reflects our continued investment in Ireland's digital infrastructure," said Tony Hanway, CEO of Virgin Media. "We are now more than halfway through our fibre upgrade programme but it's about more than just broadband speed - it's about empowering communities, supporting local economies, and laying the foundation for a truly digital Ireland," Mr Hanway said. Last week National Broadband Ireland (NBI), the company delivering the Government's National Broadband Plan (NBP), announced that over 125,000 premises across Ireland are now connected to its high-speed fibre broadband network. NBI said there are now 361,101 homes, farms and businesses that have been passed with its fibre out of the current target of 564,000. The company added that the rollout is on track to pass over 420,000 premises by the end of this year.
