Auburn finishes first three rounds of match play atop leaderboard at NCAA Championships

Auburn finishes first three rounds of match play atop leaderboard at NCAA Championships The Auburn Tigers put on another spectacular showcase on Sunday, finishing 2-under par to overtake the Arizona State Sun Devils for first place on the NCAA National Championships Group Play leaderboard. The Tigers led the pack of 15 programs that moved on to Monday's round, and barring a historic collapse, will qualify for the Quarterfinal Match Play beginning on Tuesday. Led by senior Carson Bacha's 3-under par round of 69, the Tigers finished the first three days of group play at 10-under par. Auburn was the only group to end the first 54 holes with a double-digit under par score. Arizona State (-6), Oklahoma (-3), and Florida (-1), were the only other programs to finish under par through the first three days. Last year's National Runner-Up, Florida State (+9), finished in seventh place overall, putting the Seminoles in danger of missing Monday's final top eight cut. Along with Bacha's 3-under par 69, sophomore Jackson Koivun (-1) and Brendan Valdes (E) put together solid rounds. Although Valdes didn't feature his best performance on Sunday, the senior's round was good enough for him to hold onto the team 54 hole lead at 5 strokes under par. Koivun finished one stroke back of the senior with a 4-under par, putting both players in the top seven overall on the individual leadboard. While the No. 1 ranked Tigers reaching the Match Play Quarterfinal Round is all-but a foregone conclusion, Auburn will still hope to remain at the top of the leaderboard after Monday to give themselves the best first round matchup possible. The Tigers final round of group play tees off with freshman Cayden Pope beggining play at 2:20 PM CST. Coverage of the final round can be viewed on GOLF Channel starting at 5 PM CST. LSU Gets Visit from 5-Star All-American in Transfer Portal

LSU Gymnastics may be on the verge of landing one of the top gymnasts in the country. Madison Ulrich posted pictures on her Instagram from her visit to Baton Rouge. Although she used the hashtag #notcommitted, she seems like a perfect fit for LSU. Advertisement Madison said in the comments, 'Baton Rouge, how we feelin?[hearts emojis]' Her accomplishments as a student-athlete with the University of Denver Pioneers are nothing short of outstanding. She has recently recorded career highs on Vault (9.925), Beam (9.900), Floor (9.95), and All-Around (39.575) during the NCAA Second Round and Regionals last month. The former 5-star recruit from South Carolina has been a leader on Denver from the moment she arrived two years ago. In addition to being named the Big 12 Newcomer of the year in 2024, she followed it up by individually qualifying for the NCAA National Championships. It's clear that LSU is pulling out all the stops for this gymnast. The team's existing squad members had a lot to say about Ulrich's visit in the comments. Advertisement Haleigh Bryant posted, 'These are your colors. Yes, yes, yes!' Lexi Zeiss said, 'So fun having you!!!' Freshman Kaliya Lincoln posted, 'You look so good in purple and gold'. Kylie Coen posted, 'I like this!' Kailin Chio posted, 'Yes, ma'am!' And Junior Ashley Cowan posted, 'We feelin' good!' It's still very much uncertain where Ulrich will be competing next season, but the anticipation is clear. Madison's choices could significantly influence who the frontrunners will be for the 2026 gymnastics season. The recent wave of WWE releases that impacted both main roster and NXT talents last week has prompted one competitor to announce the conclusion of her wrestling career. NXT performer Dani Palmer confirmed she was among those let go by the company and subsequently revealed her retirement from athletic competition due to injury setbacks. Palmer was part of a large group of releases that included main roster names like Braun Strowman, Shayna Baszler, and Dakota Kai, as well as fellow NXT talents such as Gigi Dolin, Cora Jade, Gallus, and others. Following the news, Palmer took to social media to address her departure and future. In an emotional statement, she expressed gratitude for her time and confirmed her decision to retire: "Thank you WWE for bringing me to the love of my life🤍 the past 3 years have been amazing! It's a bittersweet feeling to be officially closing out my athletic career, but I can truly say I went til the wheels fell lol. Our bodies are a gift and mine has been so kind to me. I look forward to this next chapter!! Gods been giving me some big dreams with bringing my business back and I couldn't be more stoked about it! It was announced that WWE wrestler Braun Strowman will face heavyweight boxer Tyson Fury and WWE champion Brock Lesnar will take on former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez at the WWE's Crown Jewel event at Fahd International Stadium in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on October 31. More Dani Palmer (real name Alexis Amrhein), a highly decorated former collegiate acrobat and tumbler who secured three NCAA National Championships, joined WWE through its Next In Line (NIL) program in 2022. After training at the Performance Center, she primarily competed on the NXT Level Up show and had a brief tag team run with Tatum Paxley on NXT television. Unfortunately, her progress was significantly hampered by a serious hip injury that required surgery in 2024, keeping her sidelined prior to her release. Her retirement marks an unfortunate end to a promising athletic career cut short by injury. It's unclear what she will be doing with herself going forward as a career, but it won't be as a pro wrestler. More WWE News: For more on WWE, head to Newsweek Sports.

Extremely Successful Young Head Coach Reportedly Frontrunner for Blackhawks Job

David Carle (David Reginek-Imagn Images) The Chicago Blackhawks' head coaching job has not been set in stone yet. After Luke Richardson was fired and Anders Sorensen took over for the remainder of the season, his interim tag was never removed. This left the door open and gave Sorensen a big portion of the season to prove what he could do for the team. Advertisement The Blackhawks could go back with him as he's good with the young players and the team did improve from the beginning of the season, or they could look externally for an experienced head coach or a proven winner. Frank Seravalli seems to believe that David Carle is the frontrunner for the head coaching position in Chicago. Carle is currently the head coach for the University of Denver. On his resume are two NCAA National Championships, three NCHC Championships, and two IIHF World Junior Championships. Even while he may be at the top of the list for the Blackhawks, that doesn't mean it won't be very difficult to pull him from his secure job in Denver where he's been constantly winning. A deal may be more money, but NHL coaches get fired so often. The same can't be said for coaches in the NCAA, especially not with all he has done at that level. If Carle is considering coming to the NHL, the Blackhawks have the means to convince him to come to Chicago over another team. If not, I'm betting they have a great deal of other options on the table like Jay Woodcroft or someone else better with younger players. This may have to be a decision made sooner than later. (Photo by) On Tuesday, three-time Olympic medalist Jade Carey added another title to her extensive trophy case. The Oregon State gymnast was named the 2025 AAI Award Winner, an honor often considered the 'Heisman Trophy of Women's Gymnastics.' Initiated in 1982 and facilitated by American Athletic Inc., the AAI Award 'recognizes the top senior female gymnasts in the nation for their dedication, leadership, and excellence in the sport.' Nominated initially alongside more than fifty fellow athletes, Carey's name rose to the top. Carey received the award Monday at a banquet for the upcoming NCAA National Championships in Fort Worth, Texas. Five of her fellow NCAA competitors joined her, accepting honors as finalists for the esteemed award. Along with Carey – a two-time Olympic Champion – the six finalists included four Olympic athletes and a pair of star seniors from the Oklahoma Sooners gymnastics team. Carey's Olympic teammate, Utah's Grace McCallum, was among the final six nominated for the award. They were also joined by 2020 and 2024 Olympic alternate and entrepreneur Leanne Wong (Florida). As the AAI Award recipient, American Athletic designates Carey as the "most outstanding senior collegiate female gymnast in the country." With her win, Carey joins Oregon State greats Mary Ayotte-Law (1982), Joy Selig (1991) and Chari Knight (1994) as the only AAI Award winners in program history. In her final year as an NCAA athlete, Carey has continued breaking records on and off the mat. Her gymnastics ability and unmatched consistency are unrivaled. After three impeccable seasons for the Beavers, Carey managed to raise the bar in her final year as a college athlete. (Photo by) Carey racked up 51 event titles in 2025, winning the all-around and beam in every single appearance. In doing so, she became the first gymnast in Pac-12 history to win both the beam and all-around titles in every regular season competition. Across her 52 routines competed, Jade never scored below 9.85 – an unprecedented feat of consistency. In gymnastics, her record was virtually perfect. She wasn't just consistent – she was flawless. She scored a 9.9 or higher on 88% of routines in 2025, tallying 13 9.95s, 10 9.975s, and five perfect tens. On March 15, she logged the fourth-highest all-around score in NCAA history, a 39.925 – just .075 shy of a 'perfect 40.' While the Oregon State Beavers ultimately failed to qualify as a complete team, she led the program to the 'Sweet Sixteen,' winning the regional all-around championship in the process. With her win, Carey booked a solo trip to Fort Worth to compete for individual national championships. She next takes to the floor on Thursday, April 17, where she seeks her first NCAA title after five trips to the podium. (Photo by) Though not as flashy as her sky-high tumbling and stuck landings, Carey's work off the mat is also of elite caliber. Oregon State Athletics reports that Carey has excelled in her studies as an Oregon State student. Carey has logged a 4.0 on three occasions and nabbed a spot on the university honor roll seven times. In recognition of her academic achievements, Carey was named to the Pac-12 Honor Roll in 2023 and 2024. Outside of her studies, Carey is a trailblazer in women's empowerment and athletic leadership on campus. Carey is a co-president of Oregon State's WomenLEAD chapter, an organization 'dedicated to empowering and uplifting female student-athletes.' Oregon State reports that Carey, as co-president, was an architect behind an outreach event, 'Play Like A Girl.' Conducted on National Girls and Women in Sports Day, the event aimed to cultivate girls' and women's sports in the local Corvallis community. 'Being a part of WomenLead fuels my passion for uplifting the voices of women in sports, building resilience, and celebrating our strength,' Carey said in a post from early 2025. 'OSU is filled with so many brave and strong leaders that I can't wait to continue to empower and support.' On Thursday, Carey's illustrious NCAA career will come to a close. The senior will compete in the second of two semifinals in the 'Elite Eight' round, rotating with the defending National Champion No. 1 LSU Tigers at 9:00 p.m. ET on ESPN2. Though Carey has numerous accolades, including five top-three finishes on the NCAA podium, she has yet to win an NCAA title. Whether the elusive title comes on Thursday or not, the Olympic and World Champion's impact on Oregon State and the greater gymnastics community is worth its weight in gold.
