AP to launch NCD 4.0 survey with comprehensive reforms

Vijayawada: Minister for medical, health, and family welfare Y Satya Kumar Yadav announced that the Andhra Pradesh government will launch the Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) 4.0 survey in September 2025. The current NCD 3.0 survey, launched on November 14, 2024, with a target to screen 4.1 crore people, has so far screened around 3 crore individuals and will continue through August. Addressing a workshop at China Kakani in Guntur district, the minister emphasised the need for better coordination among health workers to ensure accurate results in cancer detection under NCD 4.0. Drawing from personal experience — having lost his mother and sibling to cancer — he stressed the urgency of curbing its spread in the state. He revealed that Andhra Pradesh reports around 75,000 new cancer cases and 30,000 cancer-related deaths annually. NCDs now account for 68 per cent of all deaths in the state, surpassing the national average of 65 per cent. Oral cancer screenings reached 2.9 crore, while breast and cervical cancer screenings each reached 2 crore. However, only 0.35 per cent were diagnosed with cancer, a detection rate lower than the national average. The health minister attributed this discrepancy to several systemic gaps in NCD 3.0, including inadequate training, lack of public awareness, social stigma, poor field-level coordination, and minimal oversight. He admitted that although 70 per cent of the screening target was achieved, flaws in execution affected data reliability. NCD 4.0 will be launched with a structured action plan, real-time monitoring, improved training, and systemic reforms to enhance efficiency and accuracy in early detection, especially for cancer cases.

170 out of 1,367 suspected cases found with cancer in Andhra Pradesh

VIJAYAWADA: A statewide cancer survey conducted by the Andhra Pradesh Health Department has revealed that 8.55% of individuals suspected of having cancer were diagnosed with the disease, while 3.88% were found to be in pre-cancerous stages. The survey, launched in November 2024 as part of the NCD 3.0 initiative, identified 1,367 suspected cases. Diagnostic testing confirmed cancer in 170 individuals (12.44%), with 117 in advanced stages and 53 in early stages—highlighting the urgent need for early detection and intervention. International cancer expert and State government advisor Dr Nori Dattatraya, in a meeting with Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav and senior officials, lauded the initiative and stressed the role of public awareness in early diagnosis, which significantly lowers fatality rates. While AP's incidence rate was below the national average, Dr Nori suggested a review to confirm data accuracy.

DMHO inspects Sriram Nagar Urban Health Centre

Kurnool: District Medical and Health Officer (DMHO) Dr P Shanthi Kala conducted an inspection of the Urban Health Centre at Sriram Nagar, reviewing records and reports, and inspecting the vaccine storage equipment, laboratory, and medicine storage room on Friday. During her visit, Dr Shanthi Kala also reviewed the implementation of the Friday–Dry Day program under the jurisdiction of the 58th Secretariat. She stressed that as part of this weekly initiative, health staff should visit their assigned wards every Friday to create awareness among the public about completely removing water stagnation at least once a week to curb mosquito breeding. She instructed that all details of these activities be promptly uploaded to the Friday–Dry Day app. Furthermore, if any areas with stagnant water are identified, the particulars should be uploaded to the Vector Control Hygiene app, and follow-up action should be taken through the respective Secretariat Secretary to resolve the issues effectively. Later, Dr Shanthi Kala inspected the ongoing NCD 3.0 Survey at the centre. She directed the team comprising staff nurses, ANMs, and ASHA workers to conduct house-to-house surveys and complete them expeditiously. The collected data should be uploaded to the NCD 3.0 mobile app, she added. The screening under this program covers oral, breast, and cervical cancers, along with tests for hypertension (BP), diabetes (sugar), and haemoglobin levels. Suspected cases will be referred to the Medical Officer at the Primary or Urban Health Centre for further evaluation and treatment. If necessary, cases requiring specialized care will be referred to the State Cancer Hospital in Kurnool twice a week (Tuesdays and Thursdays) for diagnostic confirmation. Treatment will be provided to confirmed cases at the designated facilities. DMO Nukaraju, Deputy DMO Chandrasekhar Reddy, ANM P Padmavathi, and ASHA worker M Padmavathi also participated in the program.
