Supriya Sule Sidesteps Question On Buzz Over NCP Factions Reuniting

Pune: NCP (SP) working president Supriya Sule on Tuesday avoided a direct response on the speculation about the rival NCP factions coming together, saying she was busy with other responsibilities and had no time to discuss the party affairs. Asked if she is remembering "dada" -- her cousin and rival NCP head Ajit Pawar -- on the Nationalist Congress Party's 26th foundation day on Tuesday, the Lok Sabha member told reporters that she has six brothers and she remembers them every day. To a query on whether she will call Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar to wish him on the party's foundation day, Ms Sule said, "I speak to all my brothers on different occasions." The NCP, founded by Sharad Pawar, split in July 2023 after nephew Ajit Pawar joined the then Shiv Sena-BJP coalition government. The party name and its clock symbol was given to the Ajit Pawar faction, while the one headed by the former Union agriculture minister was christened NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar). There has been speculation that the two factions could be looking at burying the hatchet and reuniting. To a query on a section of the NCP (SP) having the same feeling and Sharad Pawar saying all decisions regarding the party will be taken by her, Ms Sule said, "I have had no time to discuss the party affairs with party leaders or meet my family for the last 15 days." Everyone has the right to express their views and opinions in a democracy, she added. "NCP is an organisation founded by Sharad Pawar and is functional for 26 years. Everyone, whether they are with us or not, has contributed to the growth of the party. There was team work. I am remembering R R Patil, who is no more," she said. Ms Sule recently led a multi-party delegation and travelled to some of the foreign countries to convey India's stand following Operation Sindoor, The parliamentarian said she will be leaving in the afternoon for New Delhi, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet members of multi-party delegations which travelled abroad.

Dowry death: MVA team asks guv to oust women panel's head

Mumbai: A fortnight after the daughter-in-law of a now expelled Pune NCP leader died by suicide allegedly after being tortured for dowry, a delegation of women MVA functionaries called on governor C P Radhakrishnan on Tuesday to seek the removal of state women's commission head Rupali Chakankar, who is also president of the women's wing of NCP, alleging partisanship. The delegation told the governor that the Pune woman, Vaishnavi Hagawane, was mentally tortured and driven to suicide, adding that she had lodged a complaint with the women's commission but it remained a silent spectator. NCP (SP) leader Rohini Khadse, who was part of the delegation, alleged that Chakankar failed to take cognisance of multiple complaints by women in different cases in the last six months, following which there was a spurt in violence. "In our opinion, the state women's commission has failed to take action even on serious complaints of gross injustice on women and domestic violence," she said. She said it appears that the Chakankar-led women's commission is casual in its approach to complaints by women and lacks seriousness. "Since she has political affiliations, we have urged the governor to appoint an apolitical person to the post who will perform her duties seriously and ensure justice to womenfolk." Besides Khadse, who heads the women's wing of NCP (SP), Congress legislator Jyoti Gaikwad, Shiv Sena (UBT)'s Sushama Andhare, former legislator Vidya Chavan, former Mumbai mayor Kishori Pednekar, and Jayashri Shelke called on the governor. Vaishnavi (24) was found hanging in her marital home on May 16. Her family alleged that she suffered harassment at the hands of her in-laws—the family of expelled NCP leader Rajendra Hagawane—over a Rs 2-crore dowry demand. Six people have been arrested in the case so far.

Oppn demands resignation of women's commission chairperson

MUMBAI: The Opposition in the state government has demanded the resignation of Rupali Chakankar, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and head of the state's women commission, for failing to act promptly on a complaint of domestic violence filed by the family of Mayuri Jagtap, the daughter-in-law of suspended NCP leader Rajendra Hagawane, in November. Hagawane and his son Sushil were arrested by Pimpri Chinchwad police on Friday. His wife, daughter and other son were arrested earlier, after their other daughter-in-law Vaishnavi died by suicide a week ago, allegedly unable to bear violent behaviour by her in-laws. The old complaint made to Chakankar by the Jagtaps was revealed on X by activist Anjali Damania on Friday. The demand for Chakankar's resignation on Saturday was made by Rohini Khadse, NCP (SP) women's wing chief; Kishori Pednekar, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader; and Varsha Gaikwad, Mumbai Congress president. Khadse said, 'If Chakankar's cannot give justice to women, she should step down.' Gaikwad demanded that going forward, the chairperson of the commission should be a non-political person. Chakankar's party colleague Rupali Thombre-Patil also demanded that the role of commission be probed. 'If they have not done their job properly, there should be an inquiry,' she said. In their written complaint, the Jagtaps had alleged that the Hagawanes were asking for a Toyota Fortuner from them and even warned them against approaching the police saying they had connections with politicians and officers in the law-making agency. Meghraj Jagtap, Mayuri's brother, had emailed the letter to the commission along with pictures of his sister displaying injury marks on her face.

Only when the issue was highlighted by the opposition members and the media, did they get into action and arrested the suspects. The police and the state women's commission failed in protecting the victim." The state women's commission chief, Rupali Chakankar, refuted the allegation.
