TYT calls on Sarawak local universities to establish law faculty

The proposal was shared during a courtesy call by the Sarawak Students Association in United Kingdom at the Astana Negeri in Petra Jaya yesterday. Also present was Wan Junaidi's wife Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi. In a Facebook post after the visit, Wan Junaidi emphasised that Sarawak's distinctive legal framework, including native customary rights (NCR) to land, requires practitioners who understand its intricacies. He expressed hope that a locally-rooted law faculty would produce legal experts who are not only academically trained but also deeply familiar with Sarawak's constitutional and legislative context. He also highlighted the importance of grasping key national documents such as the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), the Federal Constitution, and the Sarawak State Constitution, alongside the responsibilities of the Yang di-Pertua Negeri. He urged the students, particularly those pursuing legal training, to seek hands-on exposure through court visits and to avoid shortcuts in building their careers. He encouraged students to return home after their studies and contribute towards Sarawak's development, echoing the state government's commitment to creating job opportunities and nurturing homegrown talent. Both Wan Junaidi and Fauziah conveyed their appreciation for the students' visit and extended well-wishes for their future success. law faculty lead local universities Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar

Govt clears Rpr-Durg metro rail project
Raipur: The Chhattisgarh govt cleared the path for a Raipur-to-Durg metro rail project, setting the tone for the creation of a State Capital Region (SCR), a planned urban cluster modelled after the National Capital Region (NCR). Tired of too many ads? go ad free now To boost the urban belt of the state aimed at driving economic and infrastructure growth, the recently approved SCR included an ambitious metro corridor connecting Raipur, Nava Raipur Atal Nagar, and Durg-Bhilai. This improved transit, reduced congestion, and served over 50 lakh people expected to reside in the region by 2031. The state govt sanctioned Rs 5 crore in the 2024-25 budget for a feasibility survey of the project. Following recent legislative approval in the state cabinet, the SCR will be developed on the lines of Delhi's NCR, integrating urban development, transport, housing, education, and health services across key city clusters. State govt officials said the Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA) would steer this development. Chaired by chief minister Vishnu Deo Sai, the authority included key cabinet ministers, secretaries, MLAs, and local body representatives. A CEO functioned as the authority's member-secretary. The CRDA planned and regulated land use, infrastructure, investments, and environmental safeguards. It also had the power to levy a special infrastructure cess to fund metro and other capital projects. Annual budgets and implementation reports were submitted to the state govt. An executive committee comprising top planners, engineers, finance officials, and collectors from SCR districts guided execution on the ground. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now With enhanced connectivity and integrated governance, the SCR was expected to emerge as Chhattisgarh's new growth corridor—anchored by the Raipur-Durg metro and powered by a unified development vision. To support this vision, the state created a Capital Region Development Fund along with a Revolving Fund, with the power to levy special infrastructure cesses for metro and capital projects. The authority functioned as both planning and regulatory body, coordinating between govt and private sectors while presenting an annual budget and project roadmap to the state.
