NCRTC plan: Rail body begins sourcing power via exchange for Ghaziabad station; eyes Rs 1 crore cut in annual energy bill from first drawl point

The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) has started procuring electricity through the power exchange for its Receiving Sub-Station (RSS) in Ghaziabad, in a bid to reduce operational expenses and push green energy adoption. The Ghaziabad RSS serves as the interconnection point between the Namo Bharat corridor and the national power grid. According to an official statement, the initiative marks NCRTC's shift to more cost-effective and cleaner power sources for both train operations and station infrastructure, PTI reported. This move is expected to generate annual savings of around Rs 1 crore from a single drawl point in its first year, NCRTC said. The corporation currently consumes approximately 326 million units of electricity annually, incurring energy costs of nearly Rs 300 crore. Power expenditure accounts for 30–35% of NCRTC's total operational costs. To facilitate this transition, NCRTC has entered into agreements with Power Trading Corporation (PTC India Ltd) and Uttar Pradesh Power Transmission Corporation Limited (UPPTCL). Power purchased via the exchange is expected to be more economical than traditional distribution utility sources, it said. As part of its sustainability goals, NCRTC also aims to procure at least 15% of its annual power requirement from green energy through the exchange model. The initiative is being implemented in phases, beginning with operational segments of the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor. It will later be expanded to other drawl points in Uttar Pradesh and Delhi as more sections become operational. Currently, 55 km of the corridor and 11 stations are in service, with full commissioning slated for later this year. Committee plans on shifting proposed RRTS station at Cyber Hub

The high-powered committee set up by the state government for Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL) to finalise the location of the RRTS station at Cyber City held a meeting on Friday to discuss the proposed Metro and RRTS stations, said officials. A senior government official said the RRTS station could either come up in the Haryana State Industrial & Infrastructure Development Corporation (HSIIDC) green belt, as proposed by NCRTC, or be shifted to land owned by a central government entity opposite Ambience Mall in Sirhaul. The RRTS project by NCRTC is expected to start construction by August 2026. (HT PHOTO) The committee has asked the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) to submit a detailed plan and proposed locations of its stations at Cyber Hub and along the entire Gurugram route, said officials aware of the matter. The RRTS project by NCRTC is expected to start construction by August 2026 and it will see commissioning by 2031, as per the revised detailed project report (DPR) submitted to the state government. The Gurugram Metro project is expected to see construction start in next few months, and it is expected be completed by 2030, said officials. The meeting was chaired by AK Singh, additional chief secretary, town and country planning department along with Dr Chander Shekhar Khare, chief administrator, HSVP, also CEO of GMRL, Vikas Gupta, commissioner and secretary, urban local bodies department, Shyamal Misra, CEO, GMDA, KP Gupta, chief project manager, NCRTC and senior officials from GMRL, HSIIDC, GMDA and other government departments. A senior government official, present in the meeting said that to freeze the alignment of Gurugram Metro and terminating station at Cyber Hub, NCRTC has been asked to share the final location its RRTS stations and also explore the possibility of shifting the station towards Sirhaul border, where land owned by a central government entity was available and could be utilised for the Metro station. 'The issue of setting up RRTS station and the Metro station was discussed in detail,' he said. Meanwhile, a senior GMRL official said that NCRTC has also been asked to provide the final alignment of RRTS route in Gurugram so that any similar issue can be resolved in advance. 'The GMRL alignment is currently on hold in the final stretch between Shankar Chowk and Cyber City. The alignment was tentatively planned near the existing Rapid Metro Cyber City station but the HSIIDC has not agreed to transfer land for RRTS station and this has delayed the freezing of the terminating station of Gurugram metro,' said the official. The GMRL official further said that the final decision on the location and design of the GMRL station will be taken only after a firm decision is made on the location of the NCRTC station, as seamless multimodal integration between the three transit systems: GMRL, Rapid Metro, and NCRTC is essential for commuter convenience and optimal infrastructure utilisation. As per the initial planning, the RRTS station was proposed to be underground, while the GMRL station was to be elevated. Connectivity was proposed between the RRTS station and the GMRL station via an underpass below NH-48 (Delhi-Jaipur Highway), and between the GMRL concourse level and the existing Rapid Metro station through a direct link, to ensure smooth and convenient interchange for commuters.

Parliamentary panel recommends RRTS link between IGI and Jewar Airports

A parliamentary panel has recommended that the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry connect the Indira Gandhi International Airport and the under-construction Jewar airport through the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridors. The Standing Committee on Housing and Urban Affairs, chaired by Magunta Sreenivasulu Reddy, appreciated the efforts of the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) for ensuring multimodal integration of RRTS with other transport modes such as metro rail, railways, inter-state bus terminals (ISBTs), bus depots and expressways. In its report, the committee emphasised that Jewar Airport is expected to become a key transport hub for residents of Ghaziabad, Gautam Budh Nagar, and nearby areas in the future. The growth of dense residential areas, employment opportunities, entertainment zones, educational institutions, and healthcare facilities along the Ghaziabad-Noida-Greater Noida corridor makes it even more crucial to connect these areas through a fast, safe, reliable, and efficient transport system like RRTS. "The integration of RRTS will not only improve connectivity but will also enhance the ridership and financial viability of the Delhi-Meerut Corridor. It will provide much-needed connectivity to Jewar Airport, a vital node in the region's transportation network," the committee said. The panel also noted that two major transport nodes in Delhi-NCR Indira Gandhi International Airport and Jewar Airport are yet to be integrated with the RRTS network. Regarding the IGIA-RRTS integration, the committee acknowledged that earlier it had been informed the linkage would be implemented via the Delhi-SNB corridor. "However, the DPR (Detailed Project Report) for this corridor is currently being revisited by NCRTC," it said. The committee, therefore, recommended that both airports be connected to the RRTS network to boost regional connectivity and streamline passenger movement. On the matter of public safety and comfort, the panel recommended conducting a study on the impact of vibrations from the Delhi-Meerut RRTS corridor on nearby structures, including residential buildings, offices, hospitals, and educational institutions. It also suggested the installation of sound barriers to minimize disturbance to residents and users of these facilities. "The installation of sound barriers is important to prevent inconvenience to the public due to the operation of Namo Bharat trains," the committee added. Regarding medical provisions, the committee noted that first-aid services have been established, and NCRTC has partnered with hospitals within a 10-kilometre radius of the Delhi-Meerut corridor for emergency medical support. RRTS personnel have also received training in administering CPR to address health emergencies such as strokes or cardiac arrests, the report said.
